Dragonborn?

Jan 29, 2009 10:35:01 So, I was thinking about how the Dragonborn could fit into Eberron. And I came up with a few things that I felt would make sense. I’m not much of a writer … just so you know …

They originally came from Argonnessen. The first was a female that was born from what appeared to be a geode, a treasure of one of the tribes that wandered the Vale. Believing this was a sign they had been chosen, the tribe held the female in high regard and referred to her as “The Dragonborn”. Once she was old enough, she was paired with their strongest warriors. As generations passed, and years turned into millennia, the once simple tribe of humans was replaced by the powerful Dragonborn. They continued to wander the vale, spreading out across several domains. They remained in small tribes, splitting into spate groups when their numbers were too high, and then heading off in new directions. They quickly had learned to avoid the other races of the Vale, including the masters of the domains. Where some watched them with curiosity, others would destroy entire groups, seeing them as a mockery.

Finally a few of the Dragonborn tribes attempted contact with the Seren and were surprised when they were met with praise instead of hostility. The Seren saw these people as “The Chosen”. While the 2 races never joined as one, they kept peaceful relations. The Dragonborn learned many things from the Seren (Fishing, sailing, advanced woodworking, etc) and also began to adopt their religious beliefs.

Towards the end of the Last war, as more and more explorers from the kingdoms were arriving on the shores, the Dragonborn became curious of the lands beyond the great sea. Many tribes began to set sail for lands unknown and the mysteries it would hold. The majority of these explorers were lost to the seas, others lost to the Dragons who were trying to prevent their “Escape” from their domain. The few that slipped through first landed on the south eastern shores of Khorvaire in 997yk.

The Dragonborn struggle for survival in northern Valenar against the ruthless Elven hunting parties. They receive similar treatment from the Halflings of the Talenta plains. Because of this, the largest populations of Dragonborn tribes exist in Q’barra (Where they generally get confused for lizardman and are referred to as the Tailless) and the mountains to the west. That’s not to say their lives are easier than those in the plains or Valenar. While the Lizardmen do not actively hunt the Dragonborn, they also do not tolerate their presence in their lands, killing or enslaving any they just happen to find.

None of this however means doom for the Race. The Dragonborn are powerful warriors and skilled sorcerers. They are no easy target for any of their would be attackers, and are slowly gaining hold in these regions. Their weakness lies in their nomadic nature, with tribes getting wiped out due to endless assault and overwhelming numbers. Some among the tribes hold onto the hope of a “prophecy” saying that a Dragonborn of black scales will unite the tribes and will forge a new kingdom into the lands of Khorvaire. Rumors have started that this Kingdom is already being formed on an island off the southern coast Lorghalan.

Jan 29, 2009 10:44:53 My greatest wonder is the dragonborn. I love the Serens, and I've been honkering for some knowledge of how those guys will fit in. My guess is either an experiment among the dragons of Argonessen, or through breeding with half-dragons and humans, possibly also within Argonessen.

But as I mentioned the Serens, it would be interesting to see how the Seren people react to the dragonborn.

I would almost think that having the dragonborn be somewhat like emissaries or diplomats from Argonessen to the other kingdoms of Eberron would be interesting. Perhaps hailing from some shoreline city now open to all races. Of course, this would be a major overhaul of a few things when dealing with the dragons.

But...just ideas.

Jan 29, 2009 19:12:40 i like the idea with them having a similar origin as kobolds. of course that it will be a bit more noble like the ones who revere sybers, but with some also revering kyber like the ones from the draconmicon. this way they are spread throughout eberron and really don't need to pop in from the argonessen or seren.

Jan 29, 2009 19:15:27 Interesting to say the least. Not bad at all. It doesn't quite fit for me though. My Dragonborn are more chivaly and honor oriented in flavor. I see the majority of them as Paladins and Warlords set to uphold the ideals of their clan.

Feb 07, 2009 2:32:48 I am not really a big fan of the Dragonborn having human origins. I think the simplest and best route is to just say that the Dragonborn are a race native to Argonessen. Dragonborn found in Khorvaire could just be the descendants of Dragonborn who were exiled for various crimes a long, long time ago.
