Dragonmarked Houses and the Second War

Nov 27, 2010 21:45:16 I'm toying with the idea of having some Dragonmarked houses side with certain nations if the second war were to break out. I'm curious what possibilities and combinations anyone can come up with to help me think more and more out of the box. Right now, I've come to having Aundair and Thrane spark the war with their very volatile borders, the rebellion in Thaliost, and possibly madness on part of the High Cardinal of Thrane. Karrnath seeing this as an opportunity to once again unite all the nations, jumps in, and I haven't quite decided on how to get Breland into the war - however it happens, I may like to see Droaam take advantage of Breland's preoccupation with the other Human nations.

As far as the Dragonmarked houses go, House Lyrandar with Aundair because of their unusually informal and close ties between leaders. House Deneith with Karrnath because of the House's origin from those lands. And House Medani with Breland because of their biased ties. House Tharashk with Droaam if I bring them into the war. But who sides with Thrane?

I'd explain the mercenary houses taking sides as the nation wanting to completely buyout the power of a house - and if the price was high enough, and steady enough, hurting houses like Deneith and Cannith may be okay with that. Should Cannith go with Thrane in this sense, along with the promise to create all the Warforged they want?

After that, I was going to have the dissolution of the Twelve, and leave the other houses neutral. The PC's in my campaign are not friends with any of the houses (except maybe Tarkanan), so I'm open to anything. What ideas can you guys come up with? And, thanks in advance everyone!

Nov 28, 2010 21:44:26 House Cannith West would likely side with Karrnath too. This is due to to it's (would-be) Baron Zorlan d'Cannith having connections with both Karrnath proper and the Blood of Vol.

I don't see any particular house having close ties to Thrane, would could make for interesting ties. I could even concieve of the possibility that some Houses would side specifically against Thrane. For Example Vadalis, which has close ties to the Eldeen Reaches, would have no love of Thrane after the Lycanthrope Crusade. I would also see Tharashk disliking Thrane, since they have good ties to the monstrous population and Thrane is a (somewhat) Humano-centric nation. Thrane also is rather dogmatic agaisnt the Dark Six, which are often worshipped by the more fringe-dwelling peoples of Khorvaire, so that's a double-whammy.

No matter how I see it cut, Thrane's in for a world of unpleasantness.

Nov 29, 2010 0:14:33 Thanks for the response! With all that said, I'm thinking I should just have Thrane obliterated and swallowed up by Aundair or Karrnath. Save me the headache. I appreciate the tidbit about Vadalis too, I don't know why I didn't think about that.

Sounds like the setting will be an all out war between the three remaining nations, some houses choosing sides, some not.

My current character HATES Thrane with a passion. She has a high int and history skill trained so she's 'knowledgable'. She's a Cyran noble and she sees Thrane as having the second worst reason for starting the Last War. Sierra (my character) figures that each nation had a reason for defying the normal succession of the Galifar throne.

Breland wanted to put someone on the throne who would push for more civil rights since they are more a Parilmentary monarchy. Sierra is upset by this, but she accepts it as a 'good' reason. They also provided a home for the Cyran refugees... even if the land sucks.

Karrnath defied the succession because they wanted to expand their borders... and as a warlord she can understand the idea of the strong leading over the weak... her older brother isn't the leader she is and it causes them issues.

Thrane... well, Sierra believes that they started it to expand their religion. She really HATES that. Granted, she believes in a noble's right to rule... but she doesn't believe that the divine has selected anyone to lead. I believe its mentioned they saw the war as a chance to expand their religion.

Back to my point, I think a lot of the Thrane hate is because a lot of us dislike having religion pushed on us... and we take our anger out on Thrane for it.
