Do you guys allow players to choose dragonmarks that aren't connected to their race, like a half-elf bard wanting to take the Mark of Healing? How do you handle it? Treat it as an aberrant mark? Just wondering how you guys play it. Thanks.

It hasn't come up yet, but I have put some thought in the matter.

I would definitely allow it, but my players will know that doing so is going to come with quite a bit of RP/plot credit as well. While it wouldn't automatically carry the death sentence an aberrant mark would, it would definitely make them a person of extreme interest to whichever House's Mark they have. How that turns out depends on the player and the House.

Certain races having a dragonmark would also be bigger deals, in my opinion. If, say, a duergar got a Mark of Warding it wouldn't be as big a deal as if a Warforged popped out of the works with the Mark of Making stamped on his forehead.

I have a Aasimar/Deva Swordmage ( he was Aasimar in 3.5 and became Deva in 4e). He had an aberrant mark n 3.5 which was okay'd by the dm. When it came to 4e, I basically got rid of the mark because there wernt any hard and fast rules on them. Now that they are back, Ive got rid of a replacement feat and replaced it with an aberrant mark feat.

So a long time, I didnt let on to anyone that my character had a Dragonmarked. (I believe I used its actual ability only once and the fire effect it produced mimc'd a power I had already .. so people chalked it up to that. At that time there was also a Dragonmarked member of Deneith in the party).

After that point it never really came up as an issue again, because of 4e. Now that the mark is back it may become more of an issue because of the story arc within the game. On the whole though, I dont feel that my dm really has drawn on the story potential for that mark, but thats not to say it wont happen in the future.

I have two stances on "wrong-race" dragonmarks:

If you picked one of the wrong-race because you're ignorant of the place dragonmarks have in the setting, or because you deliberately want to deal with the repercussions of having a wrong-race mark in the game, I am 100% behind you taking it, and I will use your character as a major plothook for a long-running story.

If you're just doing it for a mechanical advantage, in spite of the place dragonmarks have in the setting, then I'm going to send Thuranni and Phiarlain assassins after your character to slit their throat in their sleep.

I have 2 players in my game who are planning back-up characters in case their current characters die. They came up with a Pair of Warforged Storm Sorcs that have, what else?, the Mark of Storm.

Backstory is that they're the results of a House Cannith project to replicate Dragonmarks in artificial beings. Originally the test was determined a failure and the two forged escaped, somehow. Later in their careers they developed the Mark of Storm.

I gave the players Ample warning on my stance on Out-of Race Dragonmarks, and they said "ok."

My Stance is: I like the idea of Out-of-Race Dragonmarks, but I can't help but think that the houses would want to do something about the Mark. What I don't tell my players is what kind of reaction they can expect to receive, but I imply that it will be bad for the houses to find out.

Generally speaking, depending on the house, I see them mostly following the procedure of:
1. Discredit - Dragonmarks are passed along Bloodlines. The idea of one manifesting outside of a bloodline is simply ridiculous.
2. Investigate - As rumors grow, the house begins to take interest. They continue to publicly Discredit the stories.
3.1 Capture - Once the character grows too famous to ignore, the House moves in to deal with the character.
3.2 Convert / Eliminate / Release - Once captured, the head of the house decides how to handle said character, either offering them a position within house, killing, imprisoning, or otherwise eliminating them, or simply releasing them back into the public if they feel it's safe to do so.

This is only what the house as a whole would do, obviously. Individuals within the house may try to skip straight to Eliminate or Convert, or may continue to simply Discredit without Investigating, for whatever reason.

Nope, I don't allow it.
