Have we seen or heard any news on if the design of the Dragonmarks are changing any?

Wondering if the tattoos are still the same.

From the Design and Development article, it seems like the Least Dragonmarks are now the default Dragonmark.

Lesser and Greater Dragonmarks seem to no longer exist. Siberys Dragonmarks are still present in the world, but not yet in the game rules.

That's pretty much it. Things have changed quite a bit. I'm actaully rather disapionted that they took away the diffrent levels of power.

I might actaully end up changing it myself. I won't it to be more of a advancement. Other wise I really like it. I have no problems accept for the rather dissapionting fact of the all the Dragonmarks staying the same no matter what level you are.

The way I figure it, you can basically have it go up to Lesser once you hit Paragon status and Greater once you hit Epic.

The point is that the power of dragonmarks manifests in a different way. The Mark of Storm now improves your lightning, thunder and wind powers. Thus, as your character's lightning powers improve, you could certainly decide that your mark is growing as well. I play the Lyrandar storm sorcerer as being a storm sorcerer BECAUSE of his mark - his storm powers are him channeling the power of the storm that is his marked birthright. As a result, as he goes up in level, I'll certainly have his mark grow.

So the point is that the cosmetic appearance of the mark is released from three hard and fast stages. That doesn't mean that it doesn't grow - it means it grows when you and the DM want it to grow. The appearance of the mark should always be based on the fundamental base of the core mark, as it always has been. But if you want your mark of storm to be somewhere between the traditional Lesser and Greater mark, go for it.

With that said, I'd certainly link size and appearance to power. So the epic storm sorcerer might have what we think of as a siberys-level mark covering most of his body; the 2nd-level storm sorcerer would likely only have the least mark we're familiar with.

But again, the key is that because the marks are riders on powers as opposed to powers themselves, the power of the mark DOES grow - because the power of the abilities it improves grows.

So the short form is that my tattoo of the Greater Mark of Making isn't suddenly completely inaccurate; it reflects that my powers of creation are greater than those of the simplest form of the mark.

Well, you built a whole world, I'm sure you at least got some quest XP out of that.

For some odd reason when ever you "talk", Hellcow, it reasures me. :D I supose that if you think about it it works out. Plus you can always take a Dragomarked PP to improve your abilties. So I'm not really to worried about it, it's just kind of a shocking change. So in the mean time I'm happy with the descion.

Well, you built a whole world, I'm sure you at least got some quest XP out of that.

Yeah, Keith. You built a whole world! Me thinks you need to get that tattoo replaced with a Siberys Mark of Making. :D How much did you get for leading the Quori to conquer Sarlona?

Wait, so Siberys Marks can no come out of Least, Lesser and Greater progression? Now that is a change vs. 3.5e, and I don't mean mechanically, I mean story-wise, despite assurances to the contrary.

That said, the obstinancy in me yields to the fact that I always hated that about 3.5e Marks. It's like...if the character's entire goal is to progress through his Dragonmarkedness through to its ultimate form, why can he only get up to Greater?

Makes me wonder about the character in the Heirs of Dhakaan book who had a Siberyis mark of sentinel but was still young experience-wise ... how did that happen in the new world order of 4E?

She wasn't low experience, she was uncivilized. She was from a tribe of Cult of the Dragon Below followers out in the Shadow Marches (her granddaddy a Deneith Sentinal marshal was captured and used as breeding stock by this tribe). She was the best warrior they had, and during the course of the previous trilogy fought Ogre single handedly, just to see if she could, and she could, because she's that damn good.

At the end of that trilogy begining of the Dhakaan trilogy she's turned her back on her former masters and joined house Deneith more or less to keep House D from arresting her friends.

She's a fish out of water, she's a highly skilled barbaric (culture not class) warrior who now finds herself in a highly structured military organization/family/culture she doesn't fully understand, and has to play politics, which aren't her strong point.

Ok ... so I may be wrong ... but it still doesn't explain how according to 4E that she has a Siberyis.

Nah, that's my typing in the midst of travels and not thinking things through. It's not that Siberys marks are in the progression. It's that there is no hard-edged path of Least-Lesser-Greater progession. Essentially, if you assigned a numerical value to each size - with Least at one and Greater at three - we're saying that now you can have a mark of 1.34 or 2.16 size, not just 1, 2, or 3. A value of 1 is the Least mark we are familiar with. A value of 2 is the Lesser mark we know. A mark of 1.34 is somewhere in between. Instead of jumping instantly forward when you get the feat, you grow towards it as your power grows. People may still refer to marks in the 2-3 range as a "greater mark", but it's a range as opposed to a single value.

Siberys marks are currently undefined. I didn't work on the EPG. I know that it doesn't have an Heir of Siberys PP or ED in it. However, I know that one of the artists posted art FOR an Heir of Siberys, suggesting that it was at one point developed as a paragon path or epic destiny and it didn't make the book. Which means that it could very well appear at a future time... or you could add one yourself.

So the story hasn't CHANGED. Nothing in the book says "A marked character can develop a Siberys mark". However, at the moment, Siberys marks themselves are undefined.

How would it happen in 3E? Old-school Siberys marks required you to be at least 12th level.

Novels don't have to perfectly adhere to the rules. For that matter, GAMES don't have to perfectly adhere to the rules. I created an NPC in my last 4E game who was a child with a powerful aberrant mark - something considerably more powerful that a PC could have at that level, but in all other respects he was a child. 4E plays to this a little more by specifying that NPCs dont have to follow the same rules as NPCs. But personally, I'd have made the same character in 3E, and just broken the level rules. I'm the DM. I can do that.

But MORE critically in 4E, Siberys marks are undefined... so at the moment, you'll have to decide what it means.

I'm actually quite excited about the marks in general. The Mark of making in particular excites me because it means that a lowly blacksmith in village X who happens to be the bastard child of a d'Cannith and a tavern girl can actually craft magical items. It actually goes quite a ways to show how Cannith has the manpower and time to be the magical manufacturing Powerhouse that it is without needing NPC classes like Magewright (Which was a cool class, but now it can just be a title...or even a job...)

I sort of see mage wrights as people who take up the ritual caster, and other required feats to be semi legal for the "base" feat. And thats about it... At least for now. Sometimes I miss the world building and NPC class rules, but then again not that overly much...

I don't think it's in the EPG, because it's something that would mainly be useful for NPCs, but my original version of 4E magewrights in my campaign feat allowing the character to perform three specific rituals without possessing a ritual book, receiving a +2 bonus to any skill checks associated with those three rituals. This maintains the concept of the magewright as performing a SPECIFIC job... as opposed to having a society of people who just do whatever happens to be in the books they own. I want that concept that the locksmith is a LOCKSMITH... not a generic ritual caster who happens to have arcane lock in his book.

With that said, while I don't remember the specific description of them in the ECG/EPG, magewrights are still definitely in the world.

Based on Hellcow's model I can see it working out quite nicely. It clears up the clutter of the 3.5 Magewright and makes it more streamlined. Although it seems remarkably similar to the Dragonmark feats. Perhaps (depending on just how many rituals you get for taking a Dragonmark feat) even a little overpowered. Of course that depends on the specifics of the feat, which brings me back to my original question.

I'm kinda disappointed the pictures of more developed marks didn't make it into the books, judging from the art gallery... the lesser mark of storm is frickin' sweet! (And if I ever decide to get a tattoo, that'll be it... ;) )

I'll probably just homebrew some stuff to allow for mechanical improvement of dragonmarks. Probably some way to get a Siberys mark, too; having just finished reading the Dragon Below trilogy, Ashi's mark is sweet.

I remember reading something James Wyatt wrote (or perhaps something he said on the recent D&D podcast episode) that Siberys Heirs will be covered in a Dragon mag article sometime soon.

Interesting. Do you have any specifics on this feat of yours?

Essentially:

Magewright training
Effect: Select three rituals when you choose this feat. You may perform those rituals without possessing a ritual book, although you must meet all other requirements of the ritual and expend time and components as usual. You receive a +2 bonus to all skill checks involved in these three rituals.

The +2 bonus provides the dedicated locksmith with a slight edge over the generic ritual caster who just happens to have arcane lock in his ritual book. With that said, I still don't think it's an especially strong feat, as it doesn't reduce cost; it simply adds flavor.

With that said, i will note that while PC clerics and wizards get ritual caster as a bonus feat, I wouldn't extend this to say that EVERY "cleric" in the Church of the Silver Flame or Sovereign Host can use all rituals. Again, NPCs and PCs don't always follow the same rules. So I see limited-selection magewrights as being considerably more common than generic all-rituals-in-a-book casters... a PC ritual caster's ability to master any ritual he lays his hands on reflects a remarkable level of skill (though you'd certainly find full-scale ritual casters at places like Arcanix, the Library of Korranberg, etc).

I'm going to be largely without internet this week, so this is probably it from me for a while - have fun!

Oh! Why didn't you say that it requires time and components, not to mention the requirements? Much better than how I thought it would be. I'll porbably adapt it to be an NPC ability.

Thank you very much for this, and have fun as well!

It's funny that you mention that...since 3e Eberron was out, I was planning on getting the Lesser Mark of Sentinel over my right shoulder. I chose Mark of Sentinel due both to design and personal meaning (protecting people is just what I do)...

However, the finances involved to do it right have so far prevented me from doing that...

I was thinking left shoulder myself, although finances (among other reasons) have also prevented me. Anyone else remember the d'mark window stickies from dragon when Eberron first came out? Oddly, both the lesser marks of storm and sentinel were among the roster...

Anyways,
i'm done derailing the thread. Sorry! :D

Me too, but only concerning the visual aspects. After reading the Dragonmarked Paragon Paths I feel that the need for mark developmeent has been covered-I see no point for homebrewing anything concerning lesser and greater marks. But yes, Siberys would be nice.
