Hi all,

Not sure if there is a thread like this somewhere on the board, but I'm curious what articles and support people would want to see made available in Dragon with so many elements missing from the Eberron Player's Guide.

I personally would enjoy the following:

Heir of Sirberys
Daelkyr Half-blood character race
Ecology of the Kalashtar
Ecology of the Changeling
Druidic Sects of Eberron
Article about Eberron Eladrin cities
Dragon Prophet Paragon class - Marks of Prophecy like the 3e Dragon prophet PrC
Deathless - playable race info or epic destiny

Information of Talanta Halfling mounts (both as some sort of purchasable option available to any character, and an enhanced "ranger beast" option, complete with a talenta halfling PP that revolves around the use of a mount.

I want to see:

Heir of Siberys and Child of Khyber PPs
Druidic Sects of Eberron (including how they make use of martial rangers and the new primal classes)
Elemental Vehicles (stats for purchasing and using elemental carts, galleons, and airships of different types)
Eberronian Epic Destinies (Traveler Incarnate for changelings, say.)
Backdrop articles for exotic locales like New Hope or that one port in Reidra.

Also, we should probably repost this in the DDI General forums, so it gets the most exposure. The DDI developers read those forums often, from what I've seen on their community correspondance.

All of the above suggestions would be most welcome. At the top of my list, though, would be articles making the Goblinoids (goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears) and Orcs fully playable races. They make up far too rich a part of Eberron's history (and present) to remain "MM races".

I agree with AR that this should be cross-posted in the appropriate DDi forum. We can wish all we want here on our "home" forum, but posting in a DDi forum may very well put the idea into the right minds.

Article about Eberron Eladrin cities

I'll just note that there's a lot more detail about the Feyspires in the ECG. The EPG only provides "general PC knowledge", and the Feyspires don't fall into that category. But you'll see more on them soon enough.

Without knowing much about what's in the ECG, I would like to see an article on the subject of Espionage in Eberron.
Not just the Lanterns and the Trust and all that, but how to GM espionage (Even if there's a Goliath Barbarian in the party) and suggestions for PCs on covert ops which don't directly relate to crunchy choices.

As would I, but this odd 2 books 1 adventure format of 4e means that dragon is all we get.

I've reposted this in DDI general forum. Eberron Articles We Want to See in Dragon (DDI General Link) So if anyone wants to repost their ideas to get exposure that would be cool.

Wow. My first Hellcow reply. I'm honored and a little bit Starstruck. :P

Thanks Keith I'll be sure to check out the ECS when my Amazon order shows up. Hopefully it will get here early. Fingers crossed.

Honestly, the only one I need to see is the bugbear. They need a PC version without the "use large weapons" ability. The others would be nice (for the feats, prestige classes, etc.) but the bugbear is the one I have an issue with now.

I was wondering when someone in these forums would comment on this "missing" feat. It became an immediate houserule upon our discovering its disappointing absence from the EPG.

Our Valenar Weapon Training feat gives proficiency and a +2 feat bonus to damage with scimitars, double-scimitars and falchions.

We also "errataed" the double-scimitar's base damage to 1d8/1d8. I'm pretty certain the 1d6 dmg was yet another annoying little mistake by the authors/devs/editors of the EPG.

Its funny, that exact set of house rules was added to my theoretical games (since I don't have a game running at the current moment in time) the second I read through the EPG.

I have a feeling this has (or will) become a very common houserule. I was really surprised this feat wasn't included. It seemed a no-brainer, to me.

That said, many things about the EPG lead me to believe that its authors have a somewhat shaky understanding of/familiarity with Eberron. They knew enough to get by, but had some major "uh-oh" moments that we are now stuck accepting or houseruling. (ie- Undying feats tied to necrotic instead of radiant, eladrin with the Mark of Shadow, so on and so forth...)

(ie- Undying feats tied to necrotic instead of radiant...)

Alright, now I'm curious -I've seen that statement before and I fail to understand it.What's the problem with that? It's not as if the Aereni aren't a culture utterly fascinated with death and necromancy. It's called Aerenal Half-Life for a reason.

Furthermore, why would radiant energy be more appropriate? They're still a form of unlife-very different in their creation and sustenance than regular undead but still dead. Together they are a divine force...but are we ready to assume that they have more things common with angels than "regular" undead?

I usually agree with you but this time I think I should have it explained.

In 3e, the Undying were immune/resistant to radiant damage, were healed by healing spells, and were susceptible to necrotic damage/harmed by cause wounds negative energy spells. Put plain and simply, the elves of Arenal tend to use radiant energy, and their undying are powered by positive energy, unlike regular undead. That is why they are not in fact undead. They are, in fact, undying. Their similarity begins and ends with their appearance.

In 4e terms, the elves of Arenal aught to be masters of radiant energy, not necrotic energy, one would think.

Of course, the Arenal elves were actually masters of necromancy period... so perhaps they should gain a +1 bonus to damage with both necrotic and radiant energy abilities with that feat?

Who knows. But that is why tallric_kruush made that comment.

I still need convincing Cyber-Dave ...

Yes, I recall that. The old undead description seemed to imply that undead=creature created by (evil) negative energy. On the other hand. the 4e MM's description of the undead is the following:

Undead [Keyword]: Undead are not living creatures; spells
and effects that specifically target living creatures do not
work against them. Most undead have resistance to necrotic
damage, are immune to poison, and are vulnerable to
radiant damage. Undead do not need to breathe or sleep.

Emphasis on most. I see nothing that excludes the Deathless from the undead keyword(unless you consider them to be some sort of construct ). Besides, "positive"energy or not, it was still necromancy, positive but still necromancy. Should we assume that the most vital Aereni branch of necromancy, the one where they postpone death itself to preserve the race's future, the deepest mystery of a death-obsessed culture, has nothing to do with the necrotic and uses radiant? Why? Is radiant the new positive energy? Perhaps in terms of battle, as in "harmful to undead"-yet magicallly healing someone doesn't seem to imply that radiant energy anymore. Why should creating a deathless , the most definite positive necromancy ritual, be a radiant act? Why assume that this non-living creature, bound by necromantic energies, is somehow strange to necrotic powers and more akin to radiant, like an angel?

Taking the Aerenal Half-life feat means to step closer to the undying's nature-a closer, first hand look to the mysteries of death and the undying, those who truly explore them..Do you believe that this should offer you greater affinity to radiant powers instead of necrotic? A completely respectable opinion-one that I'm afraid doesn't convince me and I can not share .

P.S.Furthermore, I fail to notice how the Elves of Aerenal "tend to use radiant energy". I'm sure that the divinely powered clergy does, but what about the rest of them? What happened t the Aereni necromancer anyway?

P.S. I really hope I'm not just being stubborn or shortsighted. I'm simply genuinely intrigued by this topic.

I think it's more correct to say that 3E clerics used positive energy, not radiant energy, while evil clerics used negative energy.

The assumption being made here, and one that I think isn't really correct, is that radiant energy = positive energy, and necrotic = negative. This doesn't really bear out; radiant energy is dealt by numerous wizard spells, and is a particularly common damage type for Star Pact warlocks - 3E arcane casters and the Far Realm had very little to do with positive energy! The negative/necrotic connection is a little more direct, I'll grant, but it's still not one-to-one - 3E undead treated negative energy as a healing force, while 4E undead are usually still injured (albeit less) by it.

Hey, that's pretty cool. We do seem to be frequently on the same page. I've sblocked my reply for the benefit of those who don't want their thread derailed. Further discussion could definitely warrant its own thread.

by way of explanation
Cyber-dave did an admirable job addressing many of my opinions. That said, I will throw out this childish statement: In another thread, Hellcow agreed with me on this point. :sticks out tongue and makes crazy face: (That felt great... juvenile in a "you're a doo-doo head" kind of way.) ;)

In all seriousness, it might be more accurate to say that he agreed "in principle". He agreed that the feats likely should've been keyed to radiant rather than necrotic, but reminded us not to forget the necrotic-based practices of some Aereni (such as the followers of the Blood of Vol).

These necrotic-based practices, though, were a major point of contention among the Aereni in the past (again, Keith's point). The Aereni as they exist now are pretty much dead-set against negative energy/necrotic-driven necromancy. The Undying Court and their Deathguard make it their goal to oppose and destroy negatively charged undead and the necromancers who create them (per the ECS).

Such necromancers exist in Aerenal, but I would think they tend to lurk in the background, concealing their activities as best they can. I think it makes sense that, even now, there are family lines that practive necrotic-based necromancy. The majority of Aereni, though, would not. The feats should reflect the leanings of the Aereni people as whole, in my opinion.

The assumption being made here, and one that I think isn't really correct, is that radiant energy = positive energy, and necrotic = negative. This doesn't really bear out...

With the release of the ECG around the corner, we should soon get an answer as it pertains to this topic. If Irian is still around and is a plane typified by radiant energy, then I think my point is "proven", so to speak. For whatever it's worth, Keith agreed with my take on the Aereni and my association of Radiant/Positive Energy and Necrotic/Negative Energy.

This mystery thread to which I kept alluding is here. The relevant posts begin with #72.

We also had the same discussion here (on the first page), where Keith had this to say:

The Aereni have always been gifted necromancers. The original version of the Aereni Half-Life feat gave you a +1 caster level when using necromancy spells. The Aereni despise negative undead, but they understand all forms of necromancy. Aerenal includes powerful connections to both Irian and Mabar, and the line of Vol were Aereni elves and gifted negative-energy necromancers.

With that semantic point settled, however, I agree with you. The Aereni do despise the use of negative energy, which would equate to necrotic energy in 4E. As such, it would make more sense for the Aereni Half-Life ritual to provide a bonus to radiant powers. I expect this is the result of someone looking at the original feat, seeing "necromancy", and failing to understand that the Aereni are masters of positive necromancy as well as understanding the darker paths.

I figured if I were going to keep involving another person's name in the discussion, I'd better at least link the previous discussions. Obviously, Keith's opinion doesn't mean I'm right. It does mean that I'm in good company, though.

On topic: I'll second the Warforged religion, Heir of Siberys/Child of Khyber PPs and Elemental Vehicles requests .

Thank you for your answer tallric_kruush. I still have my misgivings but I think I should wait for the ECG before adding anything else to the conversation.
But I just have to do this
Concerning necrotic-based practices, I see your Keith Baker and I raise you a Keith Baker(From Elves of Aerenal, pt. II)!

While many consider necromancy to be the magic of death, for the Aereni it is far more. In studying death, the Aereni wizard learns about life. In studying fear, he learns about hope. To the elves of Aerenal, the study of necromancy is as much a philosophical voyage as a quest for power; the wizard's ability to strike down his enemy with a ray of enfeeblement is a side benefit of his work, not the point of it. The one path that the Aereni avoid is the creation of negatively charged undead: vampires, liches, wraiths, and the like. The Aereni believe that these creatures are anathema to life. According to Aereni lore, the deathless are sustained by the energy of Irian and the devotion of their descendents -- energy that is freely given. Negative undead take the energy they need to survive -- siphoning away the life energy of Eberron itself. Karrnathi necromancers scoff at this belief, but the Aereni take it very seriously.

Negative energy, with the exemption of creating undead seems to be their area of arcane expertise. Nothing in Aereni culture proibits other applications of necrotic energy like Ray of Enfeeblement, necrotic Web. There's more to necrotic-based necromancy than creating undead. The Aerenal necromancer is defitely not a hidden minority-just the Stillborn and their ilk.

Anyway, my point concerns more about the nature of the Deathless since the Aerenal Half-lIfe should reflect their nature, and we can only speculate about that. I simply consider necrotic the most appropriate type of energy for that. I do not doubt that the Court would employ radiant energy as its favourite weapon-but that issue I consider to be irrelevant in our case.

...I think we have dwelled upon it too much. Let's take some Valenar down!

i want to see an article on dragonmark feats (not neccesarily "lesser, greater, Siberys") for the paragon and epic tiers, at least one for each dragonmark and more aberrant marks (way more)

of more utility given the 4e direction for dragonmarks would be a buncha rituals labeled as being ones that can be trained as if you had ritual caster with a specific dragonmark (adding to each dragonmarks' library basically) and some sivis specific ones to emphasize their ritual knowledge.

Goblinoids will be good, too, as well as Orcs, Psyforged, and lizardfolks (love those ones !!).
Something about the deathguard of Aerenal could be good, too. Rules for symbiont could be a plus (with the daelkyr half-blood, of course), and different options for drow characters (Sulatar, Umbragen, etc...).

How about an official lineup of the Domain feats and to the Eberron gods (and support in the character builder)?

How about some articles on skill challenges and how they fit into the fantasy noir with some examples (kind of like the traps article they did a while ago)?

Agree on the Ecology of Changling, Shifter and Kalashtar!

Perhaps something in Dungeon about adapting the published adventures and the Scales of War AP to Eberron. They did something for H1 and I think H2, but I'm thinking something with broader scope (though the additional encounters were nice).

Something that they used to do in the Traveller's Aid books that would work nicely for Eberron were the Patron encounters where they would detail out a patron (to varying degrees) and give a few adventure/job ideas that the patron would likely sponsor sometimes straightforward but often with an optional twist to the patrons' stated goals (probably better for Dungeon than Dragon).

Also from those books might be interesting would be vehicle spotlights (like an airship and her crew with map and some adventure suggestions) and the Amber Zones where they gave some information about a location as well as some adventure ideas in the area.

For that matter doing something like a regular article in Dungeon similar to the style of the JTAS I think could be very interesting.

Not high on my priority list but a Bazaar of the Bizarre with an Eberron focus would can always be useful.

I would also love to see Quori stats, and articles on Goblins. I've wanted to play a Goblin scout after the mention of Jhleg in the Dreaming Dark trilogy.

Also, articles covering domains for the Eberron deities as a whole, along with PPs for them, need to come out, unless they're going to make a book book for it.

Oh, I'm hoping that one Dragon article covers using mounts, so that your Fighters and Paladins who want to play heavy cav can use it to full effect and NOT have their mounts go down like chumps, or so Valenar rangers can cav archer their way to glory (or light cav their way to glory), or Talenta halflings can be little balls of reptile-and-hobbit fury.

I want to see the quori.

We can do without a repeat of the elaborate mythos surrounding them, which was ably and beautifully presented in Secrets of Sarlona. However, the absence of statistics for the quori in the Eberron Campaign Guide nearly brought a tear to my freak-loving eyes.

I want to see stat blocks for the quori (ALL of them, and maybe some new ones if there are good concepts that haven't yet been explored) along with some thought about how PCs might encounter them, since the typical avenues are deliberately cut off in Eberron.

That's the tsucora, tsoreva, usvapna / dream master, kalaraq, hashalaq, and du'ulora, for those of us keeping score.

Bonus points if the other freaky things from that printed Dragon article way back when make their way into this article.

I'm not sure I'm following you, TWS. The druidic sects weren't meant for clerics in 3E, they were meant for druids and rangers. In 4E we can potentially add shamans, wardens, and barbarians to that mix.Are you suggesting you don't see a role for the sects to be brought into 4E for primal characters? Because it's certainly something I'd like to write about.

Oh... NM. You're saying that you don't want CHANNEL DIVINITY feats for the sects, right? I tend to agree with this. I#d like to see unique options for characters of these sects, but I#d still focus on them as primal characters, not mix them with the divine.

Oh... NM. You're saying that you don't want CHANNEL DIVINITY feats for the sects, right? I tend to agree with this. I'd like to see unique options for characters of these sects, but I'd still focus on them as primal characters, not mix them with the divine.

Precisely. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some sect-specific evocations, for example, but there's nothing divine about the druidic traditions.

I'd like to see more dragonshard items for dragonmarked characters, and a bit about the Eberron specific materials like byeshk, targath, flametouched iron and the various woods.

I agree with the above. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the only mechanic we've seen to represent creature vulnerability to materials the whole, "halt regen for 1 round after taking damage from X material" mechanic? If that's true, I'd like to see other mechanics. I mean, would Vulnerability 5 [Byshek] be not feasible? Or conferring a -2 (or something) penalty on attacks (or something) for 1 round?

You can have vulnerabilities to anything you want. You can have vulnerable 5 silver for example if you felt like it. Generally vulnerabilities in 4E are to specific energy types, but no rule anywhere says vulnerabilities can't be to other random things if you feel like it.

Byeshk blades appear in Seekers of the Ashen Crown (as a magic weapon). Seems to be the 4e route for magical materials, after seeing cold iron treated the same in AV.

And a Valenar Revenant Blade Paragon Path!!!!

More PP for eberron period. The other druid sects, the kings citadel, the various faiths, talenta dinorider.

An epic destiny for Areneal elves joinging the undying court.

Where some of the varisou PPs and EDs from the non eberron books fit (haaving problems with concepting some of the primal ones)

I want to see the quori.

Maybe these will tide you over?

Those Quori are actually pretty nicely designed from what I can see. I feel they could use some common powers that "theme" them together like other monsters have though.

Thanks! Any recommendations for a common power? I gave them all psychic resistance, but nothing else really comes to mind.

Er, not to jump in and be all competitive or anything, but I have my own conversions of the Quori as well. See this thread

For common elements, I gave them all immunity to sleep and fear effects, +2 saving throws vs charms, resistance to psychic damage, radiant vulnerability (instead of "dr/good", they're now vulnerable to representations of the Great Light that the kalashtar meditate on), and each of them has a unqiue "Insinuation" attack that somehow dictates the target's actions, though only the Kalaraq truly dominates a target with its Insinuation power. (Also, the Tsoreva doesn't have one, as it's the weakest quori and didn't even have Psychic Charm as a psi-like in 3e)

I wanted to do the Immunity bit but couldnt figure out how to do that with Monster Builder.

Also, I made them much higher in level since the lowest level inspired in ECG was 14 I think? I didnt give all the quori action control because it seems to controllery: there are others that can mess with character actions and I didnt want a battle with a bunch of quori to play out like that.

I just wrote in immunities after the psychic resistance, that's why it's not bolded in my stat-blocks.

As for the level thing, I kept them closer to the old values purely for ease. Perhaps I should go back and change them, because you're not likely to be heading to Dal Quor in the heroic tier. However, i'm not sure the high level possessed agents should be an indicator, because they're being compared to an Inspired diplomat from the ECS. It's not like she's trained for battle.

As for the controllery aspects, I felt that converting each quori's Psionic Charm and Id Insinuation or Confusion abilities was pretty essential to the feel of the quori. They're more than just physical monsters, you know? They're the power of the mind incarnate, so any battle with them should affect the PCs minds in some way.

This isn't to say that every quori choses the player's actions for them every combat. Usually the Insinuation attack is on a recharge or even 1/encounter. And for the most part they limit a PCs choices in tactically interesting ways. Fighting an Usvapna? Well you're going to be making at-will and basic attacks only, so now's your opportunity to do some charges or maybe grab and immobilize it. Tsucora or Hashalaq combat? Well if you're hit, you won't be able to choose your target freely, so you keep your placement on the battlefield flexible. The Du'ulora forces you to make basic attacks against allies, so if you're a melee bruiser, make sure you position yourself out of melee range of allies.

The only one to actually totally control player actions is the Kalaraq, and seeing as how he used to Mind Seed people, a dominating effect makes sense for him.

Why not? You go to Dal Quor every night.

Agreed. In 3E we had the CR 5 Inspired diplomat, CR 13 Du'ulora Champion, CR 9 Tsucora Dreamblade, and we mention Inspired in Secrets of Sarlona that would be epic level if fully statted. Don't feel that the level of the Inspired in the 4E EPG defines all Inspired.

Hah! Good point. For some reason, I never actually considered having an encounter with quori during  normal night's rest. (I've usually done stuff like dreamwalking, using your Occult Lore dream chapter rules)

In my opinion, that's what the quori invade dreams power represents; they are actually coming into your mundane dreams and either kicking your ass (IE nightmare) or just manipulating the dream (dream). This is key for sly manipulations. But I think that some quori will also just hunt mortal dreamers for idle sport, too. Just as a quori doesn't kill a mortal dreamer if it kills its dream-self, I don't believe that a dream-self can inflict lasting harm on a quori, so there's not a huge risk on either side. Death in dreams counts as nightmare for you (no extended rest!); for the quori, defeat likely involves a brief period of disruption.

So hey, through a random quori encounter at the PCs one day. If they all die, you get to say "Just a dream! PSYCH!" if they win, it can be the starting point for a particular quori taking a personal interest in them - something that operates outside the schemes of the Dreaming Dark.

(I've usually done stuff like dreamwalking, using your Occult Lore dream chapter rules)

Well, bonus points for that. ;)

Huh. I was under the impression that each mortal had their own dreamspace. Do people sleeping in close proximity to each other (say, around a campfire) have "close" dreamscapes in Dal Quor? I didn't think of having PCs share mundane dreamscapes...

Hehe, thought you might like that. I've only managed to insert a dream adventure into my game once, but I'm about to do it again, in the same campaign.

Basically I had the Inspired plots draw Dal Quor closer to Eberron. As a side effect that only the Kalahstar discovered, they found a way to dreamwalk if you lucid dream. So the PCs ended up having a kalashtar dreamwalker guide teach them to lucid dream, fight their own id beasts, and leave their dreamspaces to get all the way across Khorvaire in one night.

Under normal circumstances, they don't. You and I go to sleep. I dream of you, you dream of me. 99.9% of the time, we're just dealing with manifestations of one another drawn from our own subconscious. But there's always the chance that this is that rare time where one of us has slipped into the other's dreamscape - because it IS all taking place on the same plane. And beyond this, it's Eberron, so lots of things could have some impact on your dreams. Perhaps you're sleeping in a place that was once a potent manifest zone to Dal Quor before the war with the giants, and a tiny trace of it remains. Perhaps some lingering trace of a powerful spell draws the PCs together by proximity. Perhaps it's a side effect of one of their magic items that they on't even know about; I'd love to make an artifact that has side effects tied to dreams that grow stronger as the bond with the artifact grows stronger. The Crown of Dol Azur not only gives me influence in the waking world, it draws you into my dreams, making my dreams your own...

Ah yeah, you see that's the mental block I've been stumbling on. I don't know how to create a "you're dreaming!" encounter with the actual party unless there's something weird and important story-related going on explaining why you're all in the same dreamscape.

...Unless I have it just be ONE player's dream, and when he's attacked by a Quori he summons up manifestations of the rest of the party. Then the whole party can participate in the combat even though only one of them is the real dreamer.

I suppose that's an easy enough solution. I can award XP to the whole party by just saying it was a simultaneous attack on all of them by a quori strike-force.

very nice.

You could do a skill challenge along with the combat encounter in which the dreamer tries to keep his friends manifestations inside his dreamspace. failures can cause a PC to get a
weakened and insubstantial conditions as they phase out of the dreamspace. while successes can gain them healing surges, combat advantage, action-points use as the dreamer manifest his friends as 'bigger then life' heroic individuals.

I vote for an article on the druidic sects but would welcome all kinds of articles on Eberron.

I absolutely enjoyed reading "Backdrop Graywall" and would love to see more of that kind.

So we finally got our Valenar article.  Very nice and crunchy, I thought.

Still no Channel Divin's for Olladra or the BoV, though?  These could be handled with an update to the ECG, rather than an article, I would think.

Yeah, DDI articles on each of the Eberron deities would be really cool. Would also be handy to have each one explain how (and give ideas for) a character, PC or NPC, can worship a pantheon but put one god very much above the others.

Hmm. I'm a war grognard, so I'd love to see more on the Last War, specifically, famous units.  the Cyrean Storm Cavaliers? the Karrnathi Iron Band? the Brelish 9th Brigade? the Aundair Knights Phantom? the Thrane Avenging Hand of the Eternal Flame?

Of those all, only the Knights Phantom have had anything on them in detail, and I don't think it's been brought over to this edition yet. I'd love to see more unique units and unique terminology for each nation; in another thread I wrote about the Risen Grenadiers and the Risen Foot Guards, and talked a bit about the other Risen Patriots (the Karrnathi name for undead regiments) units. I do want more, though.

I have more ideas, but I'll space them out.
