Eberron Campaign, Blade of Vol

So my players want to run a 3.5 Eberron campaign.  I have been a player for 30 years and only began DMing say 8 years ago.  I don't normally make my own campaigns.

As a result, I'm going to do a mash.  I have a TON, I mean a ton of the old AEG d20 (often 12 page) mini adventures.  There must be 30+ of all levels andthey can be dropped into any adventure.

So, I'm looking for any advice, or suggestions.

My story is this:

Eberron is ruined, the grey mist has covered 90% of Khorvaire.  History is changing before your eyes.  History books no longer match what happened.  Something is wrong.

Unknown the the players yet, Lady Vol and the Lord of Blades, with help from Daelkyr have found a way to send Warforged back in time, one way, via a gateway (read no flesh) to rewrite history, and its working.  (Yes, if you see the terminator in there, that's correct)

Our heroes cannot fix history, they can only try to rewrite it even more, to mke the modern world livable.  Over the past 5 years the Gatekeepers, Dragonmarked and a few powerful Quori have found a way to sort of replicate the Vol gateway.  They can send the "spirit" of a humanoid into the body of someone from the past.  While they take on the form and appearance of the person they "inspire", their actual powers are fully usable.

Here is the advantage this gives me, in my opinion.  Death is no longer a horrid fear.  If they die, the body they are in expires, their spirit is returned to present.  There is now no requirement to "complete" a mission, failure is an option.  They can be bad guys.  I don't have to send them back to fix bad things, they could be sent back to kill someone that "should have" died, but did not.  I can send them back as enhanced monsters.  Why be the Silver Flame during the purge, why not a pack of lycanthropes?

At some point, say 10 or 15, they will change enough that they now must hunt down Vol and the Blade, in som epic finale.

I plan to use the AEG adventures as foundations for missions.

So, that's the plan so far.

So, Terminator meets Quantum Leap?

I would think the play would be split between the current, post-apolcalyptic world, as players searched for clues as to when and wheere they sould be travelling back to, and the past where they try to change things.  Since the critical date is probably the day of mounring, most of the events they would be trying to influeuence would be during the Last War, which means you have all the materials in Forge of War to draw upon.

As a player I would probably focus on how the Mourning the originally caused, and what causeed it to stop at the borders of Cyre.  I would look for answers to the Lord of Blades (who presumably knows in order to affect it), Cannith, Queen Dannel and her advisors, and House Phiarlan, which seemed to know something about it before it happened.  Other possiblilities are to look at the Draconic Prophecy to determine what events might have been changed to bring about catastrophie.

I am curious, I can guess the Lord of Blade's agenda, but what is Vol's interest?

Yep, that generally sums it up.

Correct, they will start out hunting down a Khyber Shard needed to power the device to do the soul transfer.

Now and again, they will then need to do things in the "real" world, such as at some point I plan to have enemy forces attack the base.  They will have to find items/material needed to locate people in the past and or, help change events.

While the Last War (and Forge) are parts of the adventure, they will go back even before this to the Silver Purge, the War of the Mark, etc.

As for Vol, in today's age she bears the Mark of Death, she was not killed, nor the mark removed.  Vol manipulates The Blade into thinking he will amass power in his extended section of the Mournland.  She uses him to eliminate targets, and to change events.  if I can do this right, the players have a chance to uncover this and plant the seeds to end the Blade/Vol relationship.  Vol plans to get revenge on the houses that excommunicated her and the Dragons.  After that, she plans to take over the world.

It’s a mass thought, a mixed cloud of ideas still.

A very enticing idea for a campaign! There are a few questions I may have for you - the main one largely related to the usual time-travel problems.

If history changes before people's eyes, how do they realise this is happening? Once history is changed, the new history has always been there; so how do people who are not directly implicated (Vol, the Lord of Blades, and so forth) know that Khovaire is not supposed to be covered entirely by the Mourning? I assume there are several ways movies and stories involving time travelling have resolved this, though I can't remember any...

Would other forces be able to hijack the time travelling devices for ends that are aligned neither with the Vol-Blades duo, nor with the PCs? I'm thinking primarily of the Dreaming Dark, who might be quite interested to finally find out what the previous incarnation of Dal Quor was like - and of the Lords of Dust, who could unmake the binding of the Overlords that way.  I'm not sure what to make of this, but it occurred to me that the warforged are originally a Quori invention - and you mention that they were involved in the creation of this time-gate - and if warforged are also  essential to timetravelling, there might be a link, though none I have fully thought out yet, so I'm simply throwing this idea into the open now. Also,I wonder whether the fact that time flows differently on Dal Quor than on Eberron can be used in some way - and, for that matter, whether the principle could be extend to other planes with different times (Thelanis and Dollurh).

How did Vol survive, and what relation did she have to the Houses (who were formed at the time of the War of the Mark, long after the annihilation of "House" Vol? I assume the conflict between Vol and the Undying Court happened, but that Vol, instead of being killed and raised as a lich, escaped alive; but how has she entered into relations with the other Houses without being found out by the Undying Court? There are certainly ways of doing this - and of creating a business-based House Vol in this alternate history - but what's your vision here?
