Eberron Campaign Guide

I thumbed through this yesterday.  I have to say that the best thing about it is the map at the front of the book.  The rest of it . . .

It's a book that is not organized to my liking, really.  I would love to have all the monsters with generic entries to have their own section in the book so that they would be easy to find.  Pretty much that's my only beef is that the layout could have been done a little better.

Now the map.  Yes, the map of Eberron is the best thing about the book.  I was looking at it, and I wondered if I could still make the planet hollow with two openings in the north pole and the south.  The map looks like a realistic mercator projection -- almost as if it was taken by sattelite.  Yep, it was that good.  (I also was musing about putting a Brown Dwarf star at it's north pole along with two other planets at some point in Eberron's mythic past, and then Eberron's Sun snuffing out the Brown Dwarf Star, transforming it into a jovian planet.  Number one, I don't take the Creation Myth literally).

The rest of it, from what I can thumb through, is a little better organized in relation to the Eberron Campaign Setting book for 3e.  What I am refering to is the nations write ups.  They were separated from each other and put into two sections -- the 5 nations, and the other nations.  I think that was a plus.  I was just annoyed that monster information was scattered through the book.

Overall . . . Strangely enough, I think the character race section in the Eberron Player's Guide was better formatted.  Still, the book makes good use of space.  My suggestion -- it's a good buy if you absolutely need it, but the information in the ECS is still valid, if a little outdated.  I would suggest downloading . . . oops they don't sell it anymore, sorry, your stuck with buying two copies of the book and cutting out/or copying down the monster information and pasting it into your copy of the ECS as a postit note.

However, if you can get . . . they don't sell it anymore . . . you can also print out that map at your local Kinkos all blown up and laminated so you can frame it and put it on your wall.  It's that good. Wink

I didn't love the layout of the ECG, but the content is top-notch. I eventually came to believe that the layout was condensed in order to cram more info into the allotted pages. If you've experienced the dearth of detail and virtually useless nature of the FRCG, then you know how terrible a campaign guide sans detail really is.

There are legitimate gripes in regard to presentation, but the ECG is a great book. I think it's probably the best done of all of the 4E books. That's really not surprising, considering whom they chose to write it. Those guys are the best of the best, and were the obvious choices for this particular setting.

I'm happy to own the original ECS. It was cool to have been with the setting literally since day one. That said, I never feel the need to dive back into the ECS the way I have to pull out the old FRCS when playing in the Realms. The Eberron Campaign Guide didn't, in my opinion, leave any real gaps that require the old supplement to fill.

Did you post this a few months ago? Or was it a "review" of the Player's Guide?

The Player's Guide.

Although if I had to compare them together, I think the New Race information in the Players Guide beats out the Nations information in terms of Layout.  Although the world map in the Eberron Campaign Guide is real top notch professional work.  I was really impressed with it (I should have bought the two together, actually).

Like someone else said on my review of the Players Guide, "what you didn't mention the map?"  Now I've mentioned the map.  Remember, I thumbed through it.

I don't know if it's official, but this is what I found for errata.
