Eberron DM - Surprise and Well Done!

I’ve started and restarted this three times, cause I don’t want to be just another boring post. It might be anyway, but if I don't get started this will never happen.

So let’s state the main point first: my DM is awesome.

My RP group started playing an Eberron campaign the week the books came out for 4th edition. We were all really excited about it, which was funny considering two of the five players had never played D&D before 4th ed. We’re still playing the same campaign, and I’ve never actually been part of one that’s lasted so long. Sure, several of the players have gotten bored with characters or mechanics of a class and switched out, but three of the adventuring party (wizard, cleric, and DM companion character) have stayed for the duration, creating a continual plot, story and cohesive world. (And even two of those three have switched classes due to mechanic changes or boredom.)

The game started about 2 years before the Mourning. Every player knows that starting a game so early in history means we’re going to have something to do with the event. And, let’s face it, that’s what half the players want anyway, right? Most of the time, you expect that it’ll either just happen, or that you’ll have to participate in stopping the Mourning from happening – and when you fail, you have the nemesis you chase for the next 10 levels or so. At least, that’s what we were expecting.

Then the DM pulled the rug out from under us.

The Halfling cleric, a mouthy little pacifist of House Jorasco, is going to cause the Mourning. In fact, that’s the only reason she was created. Oh, and the nightmares she’s been having for the last 9 levels? Not nightmares. Those are memories of all the people who died in Cyre – she’s been dreaming of the Mourning for the last year or so. She’s actually a conglomeration of all the memories of the people who died.

If she doesn’t pull the lever and do what she was designed to do, both the Lords of Dust and the Lords of Madness will gain enough energy from the war to release some pretty nasty things (rakshasa raja Warbringers and powerful daelkyr to start). Oh, and Cyre might succeed in their plan of destroying all of Khorvaire to save themselves. And she’ll cease to exist.

We just hit level 16.

I could not be more delighted with this game and this DM. He’s managed to give me exactly the kind of game I was hoping for – a game with consequences and reactions, and being able to experience how things build to that level of epic that is…well…epic. In general, a game that has a story.

(We all kind of helped. We chose the classes, paragon paths, backgrounds, and epic destinies and he started building stories about how we came to be those people.)

This may not be the best place to put this, and it may seem a little silly, but I had to say it. GoldDragonDM, you have done a fantastic job of building this plot and this game. You've been consistant and surprising. You've made this into something awesome to a person who is more roleplay than rollplay while still giving everyone else the hack-and-slash they need.

I commend you. And I might make you cookies.

Jul 31, 2010 12:19:25 Congrats. Every DM dreams of having it all come together like this. I'm not a new DM, but I am new to Eberron, so I would be interested in hearing more about the campaign arc. I imagine others would be as well!

Allow me to begin by noting that there is no DM in the history of DMs that does not like cookies. As my group's usual DM, I recommend and endorse this course of action.

It sounds like you're blessed with one of those rare groups where everything clicks together and the result is far greater than the sum of its parts. I've had the good fortune to have found the same in the past, and it is always a magnificent thing to behold.

Given that there's little more I can say, I simply wish you and your group the best of luck in your upcoming Epic tier.

Mostly I just wanted to share how elated I am with my DM and with the group I'm with right now. I've honestly never been more satisfied with a roleplaying game in 13 years, so I felt the need to brag and to share my joy!
