| #1rdarcoNov 05, 2008 1:00:09 | What would be the Khorvaire equivalent of "God Rest her Soul"? Y'know, something superstitious to say immediately after saying the name of someone who is dead? Any other expressions that y'all have come up with that you'd like to share? |
| #2wymarcNov 05, 2008 14:16:38 | Keeper spare him/her May he/she join the Flame May he/she find Divinity Sovereign Host/Dark Six, Silver Flame, and Blood of Vol respectively. |
| #3Elton74Nov 05, 2008 14:20:59 | May the Light guide him. The Path of Light. |
| #4HellcowNov 05, 2008 14:57:17 | Keeper spare him/her The same thoughts occured to me, though I'd likely say "May s/he slip through the claws of the Keeper" or "Flame preserve her", respectively. As many vassals believe that the souls of the dead sit with the Sovereigns after passing through Dolurrh, you could also say "Sovereigns shelter her", "May she dine at Olladra's table", or something like that. |
| #5goblin_prideNov 05, 2008 21:04:47 | I generally used "Dhakaan" in place of references to any deity. With that, I could use all of the colorful language we use today. Such as: "What, in the Name of Dhakaan, were you thinking?" |
| #6NivedNov 05, 2008 23:05:02 | For a character of mine I was trying to come up with a common expletive he'd use. I tried to come up with a variation on 'thrice damned' with the Dark Six, but "six damned" and "hex damned" didn't want to roll off the tongue. I settled on just using "hexed" as my general purpose expletive. Given a hexagon has six sides and the Dark Six's collective holy symbol is a hexagram, along with the term hex being equated with a negative magical effect it lent itself quite well as an expletive. And as all good expletives should it lends itself as a utilitarian word, being able to be used as an adjective, an adverb, a verb, noun, practically every word in a sentence if need be. Simple but effective. |
| #7HellcowNov 05, 2008 23:23:59 | For a character of mine I was trying to come up with a common expletive he'd use. I tried to come up with a variation on 'thrice damned' with the Dark Six... Yes, when it comes to expletives, characters in my books use "thrice-damned" a lot... actually refering to the three progenitors, so it's one that can be used by followers of any faith. "Flame!" is often used by certain characters. And then you can do almost anything with the Sovereigns. "Aureon's Word!" is fairly common in Queen of Stone... but I'm still fond of "Boldrei's Bloody Nose!", which I believe is used by a dwarf guard sergeant in City of Towers. |
| #8Elton74Nov 05, 2008 23:33:50 | I don't think my characters resort to expleting their displeasure. I guess I go for the high road. |
| #9OgiwanNov 06, 2008 9:44:25 | I am also a fan of Boldrei's Bloody Nose, as alliteration is a great thing. Mmmm, I believe I've also read the Brelish "blunted" being a minor curse, and "tower spit" being our equivalent of "bullcrap". "On [his/her] knees faster than a Thrane before an alter" was another one I read in a book, and I'm a fan of it. A similar one could be, "a Thrane/Flamer/Templar in a *****house" for something that doesn't fit. Perhaps, "Auron's Beard!", or "the Host?!" (as in, "What the Host?!"), although i guess the latter is kinda weak. Oh, what was it in the Binding Stone trilogy...."See the Ring of Syberis in a mudpuddle" for an optimist? Also, don't forget epithets, nationalistic insults, and patriotic statements. One of the books had an ex-Aundarian soldier retorting to a 'forged with something along the lines of, "Aundair dares, bastard son of Cannith!", the former (Aundair Dares) being an Aundarian battle cry, and the latter being an epithet for warforged. Similarly, Singe's utterance of, "Bastard grave-robbing Karrns!" resulted in one of my favorite scenes in any Eberron book. |
| #10HellcowNov 06, 2008 10:37:53 | I don't think my characters resort to expleting their displeasure. I guess I go for the high road. The original subject of the thread has nothing to do with expressing displeasure... unless you'd consider "God rest her soul" to be an expletive. "May she escape the claws of the Keeper" is an expression of hope, not of outrage. Likewise, "Aureon's Word" is something actually used for emphasis rather than anger... a soldier telling a story says "I did my share of bloody deeds those days, on Aureon's word!" So certainly, "Thrice-damned Karrns" is an expletive... but the subject of the thread is expressions, not necessarily expletives. With that in mind, I'll also throw out "Beware the gifts of the Traveler" (good foturne may not be as it seems) and "Taking the side of the Traveler" (essentially, playing Devil's advocate). |
| #11Elton74Nov 06, 2008 10:38:59 | Sort of like: "May you live in interesting times." |
| #12rekkoNov 06, 2008 18:59:57 | Here are a few of the top of my head "By the Dragons!" sort of an "Oh my god!" referring to the progenitor wyrms. "The Flame casts its shadow" could be a Thrane expression referring to corruption. "Reach high like the towers of Sharn" could be a good luck expression for people of Breland and Sharn. Rekko |
| #13Elton74Nov 06, 2008 20:02:14 | Here are a few of the top of my head "May the Light guide you on the Path." Kalashtar expression. "By the Light . . . " Kalashtar expletive. "May your path be wonderful and bright." Adaran farewell. "By Taratai's Grave!" Kalashtar expletive. "By the Day of Sorrow." Kalashtar expression. |
| #14HellcowNov 06, 2008 20:26:38 | "By Taratai's Grave!" Kalashtar expletive I'd probably say "Taratai's Loss!" or "By the Void!" After all, Taratai was a spirit spread among many bodies. The spirit itself has no grave, and no single body. |
| #15Elton74Nov 06, 2008 22:05:56 | I'd probably say "Taratai's Loss!" or "By the Void!" After all, Taratai was a spirit spread among many bodies. The spirit itself has no grave, and no single body. Oh, I have forgotten about that fact. "By the Void!" and "Taratai's Loss!" are much better sounding. ![]() |
| #16nerdicusNov 07, 2008 20:06:04 | "By Kol Korran's Coin purse!" "By the bloody beasts of Balinor!" "Boldrei's Bursting Bosom!" "Fury's servant!" To be exclaimed over a crime of passion |
| #17PJammaGodNov 15, 2008 6:57:59 | "May the Keeper take my soul if I am lying" "That about as useful as a Karrnathi trying stand-up Comedy" (quoted from Human Karrnathi Warlord in one of my games) "Aureon grant this fool the wisdom to pick a fight with someone else" (from the same Karrnathi warlord) Just some of the various expressions to have appeared in my Eberron group. |
| #18NivedNov 15, 2008 8:19:03 | I like those PJ. |
| #19PJammaGodNov 16, 2008 23:36:26 | Cheers Nived, I can't claim any of them as my own, merely what various members of the game I run have said over the years. I'm trying to dig up a classic that came from the Maenad Paladin. It was something to do with the Dreaming Dark getting you (the classic "In Russia Y gets X"). I think he abbreviated it from one of the novels but I'm not sure which one. Time to go through my DM's diary from a coupel of years back :P . |
| #20rdarcoNov 21, 2008 17:16:31 | Sweet! Thanks for the suggestions. |
| #21uncleandyradioDec 02, 2008 9:37:18 | I like to use 'Kyber' ........as in "Where in Kyber is he?"....."to the depths of Kyber" i have also used the Battlestar Galactica made up word....'Frag' sometimes in our groups online rp love the ideas!! Thanks Keith for a great world! |
| #22davethebrave371Dec 03, 2008 0:09:49 | hahahaha, even though this was an out of game quote, when a couple of my players and myself kept effing up words and grammar all night like tongue-tied drunks, one of my other players piped up with "Go back to Morgrave!" while shaking his head in disapproval. |
| #23PJammaGodDec 03, 2008 4:40:23 | Hmm was digging through my archives and found another two. From the (now classic) Karrnathi Warlord: * "Doras Del Doran... the Doras Del Doran (he's the Trust head honcho in Sharn)... The man who sells poison to the Mockery and dices with the Keeper ?" And from a Brelish Mage (feeling sarcastic at the time) "Yes and the Fury keeps her promises" |
