Jan 04, 2012 2:47:15 From what I understand, dragonmarked excoriates not only relinquish their position, property and privileges within their house, but they also forfeit the use of their surnames?

So, how do they identify themselves? Do they adopt another surname, or do they go surname-less? If the former, what kind of surnames do they tend to choose?

Jan 05, 2012 20:13:12 The campaign where it happened to one of my characters had the character taking the name of the domain that she was being 'encouraged' to inherit as her new surname. Fairly common for a noble's surname to be that of their domain.

I'd guess picking a descriptive epithet would be common.

Feb 03, 2012 5:03:20 I'm currently playing an excoriated dragonmarked member of House Deneith (he sired a child with a dragonmarked member of House Lyrandar and both got the boot from their houses). The idea I had when it came to his surname is this: He has an clan/immediate family name that preceeds the house name in formal address. His full name would thus be like this:

First Name: Armus
Family Name: Hawkwind
House Name: d'Deneith

Among his own house, he'd be known as Armus Hawkwind. Outside his house, Armus d'Deneith. By my figuring, every house would be that way. Houses are big after all, and you may have people within the house who are only very, very distantly related. This gives people away of more precisely what family within that house they come from.

Now that he's been excoriated, he simply goes by Armus Hawkwind, or preferably just Armus so as to keep a low profile.

Each house is composed of a number of families; the 3.5 book Dragonmarked doesn't specify the family names for Denieth, but it does for a few others. For example, Tharashk was originally composed of three human/half-orc clans, the Aashta, Velderan, and Torrn, and those are used exactly as KrashKow describes with his character. That's also where the name Thuranni and Phiarlan come from; they're two of the elven families that can manifest the Mark of Shadow; the Paelions were another, but they're all dead.

Feb 11, 2012 10:11:05 Exactly right. Some houses (notably Sivis) always use the full three names. Tharashk heirs are more likely to use clan name than house name. As a side note, the three named clans are the major Tharashk clans, but we note in a few places that there are other lesser ones - so you aren't stuck to just those three names.
