Well I asked myself which european fashion eras would be appropriate for the five nations of Khorvaire? Renaissance, Rococo or Barock? Perhaps all of these are appropriate? Some more? I just assumed that in Eborron we left the medieval fashion nightmare behind us and dress more like the four musketeers, Sir Francis Drake or like in the Pirates of the caribbean if you like.

Actually the Five Nations sourcebook has some general information (e.g. the Brelish tend to wear simple light clothes and use the color blue a lot). I don't know if you have access to it, but it is definitely worth looking up.
The best part in my opinion is the 'Five thing every X should know' that are so useful for helping your players create a personality and backstory for their characters.

Thanks for the reply. I actually do have the book, but dont you agree with me that," simple light clothes;... use the color blue a lot", Is pretty vague? It's nowhere been mentioned of what "style" the clothes actually are.

Well when I look at the available pictures I get the impression that we are in fact in a late Barock/Rococo setting, with some elements of older fashion styles.

Has it occurred to you that it isn't based on any time period from our world? Or at least not any single one. Fashion there would be completely different then here and I doubt it would copy any era.

A combination of late 18th- to mid-19th-century, with the better aspects of the 17th still hanging around (sans wigs and puffy breeches, I would think), with a healthy dose of anime-stylings thrown in. Although not so many as appear in the Dragonshard game, which has everyone in generic fantasy gear which looks completely impractical for exploring the interior of Xen'drik.

No, the five nations are one civilization and therefore every cultural aspect is based on a coherent theme throught the five nations. BTW, Galifar bears some astonishing resemblances with the holy roman empire of the german nation. Fantasy always draws from historical and real world things, since each fiction must have roots in reality to allow access for many people on a familiar level to inspire their own imagination. Which is necessary to enjoy it. Every word that describes Eberron is drawn from somewhere, thats just how it is.

Look at these wide-brimmed hats the elite of the citadel wear. This is Rococo my friend and the organisation itself is reminiscent of the french king's Musketeers. Deal with it. Or better said, they are reminiscent of the french king's Musketeers how Alexandre Dumas portrayed them. Have you ever read "Les trois mousquétaires", "The three Musketeers"? Do it and you will have some "aha-moments". Keith Baker is great because he doesnt hesitate to lend from the best.

But that is the artist's imagination. Some artists are (and no insult to the artist of that) more imaginative. If we didn't have people who created original works, then by your theory, nothing would have been made. Also, the Five Nations are just that. Five Nations, on the same continent. Their civilization's are each radically different from the others, influenced by history and environment. Mexico and the U.S. have radically different cultures, as would Aundair and Breland. Never mind the world is different because of magic existing. A magewright who decides to make the newest styles for Sharn is going to be able to make things much differently than a mundane seamstress (including those from our own world). Five Nations fashion, for that reason, can defy logic and purpose, as well as what we would typically imagine. A dress might be made of platinum or mithral that's been enchanted to be soft and fluid as silk. Material like Aernal's forests leaves and dinosaur leather exist, and flametouched silver for jewelry. There are huge differences to be accounted for if you let your imagination run wild, and you shouldn't say X art is based on X time period, so therefore all clothes must have a basis, because they don't for the simple reason that design is based on said artist's imagination and creativity.
