| #1revan4444Feb 22, 2008 17:53:34 | I've been reading the Five Nations and out of the Nations that I've been reading Breland has caught my attention and now it has become my fav nation. One of the reason's I like Breland is from what I've read is that the others believe that Breland could have one the Last War and that to me it seems that the other nations agree along with the citizens of breland that breland has the wealth and the military power to possibly stand on its own during the next war between the nations when it breaks out. Of course at the same time the citizens enjoy the freedom that they have thanks to the king Boranel. What is everyone's fav nation? |
| #2cuaglarFeb 22, 2008 18:12:31 | I like Aundair best, I think. Most of my characters have Aundair as their homeland anyway, or the Eldeen Reaches when it was still Aundairian. I like their attitude, even if they're small and mistaken for a magic-user-land, like Halruaa in FR. At least, that was my first impression of it, until I began reading between the lines. Not everywhere is Arcanix. I'd like to like Thrane as well, as I'm a very paladin-y and lawful good person myself. But there's just... I don't know. It sounds too hard to live there comfortably, or something. Something deters me. |
| #3revan4444Feb 22, 2008 18:25:26 | I don't know when I first read about Aundair, the impression that I got was that they're all uptight or maybe its just me, but you are right as well Aundair kinda reminds me of Halraua. I found another reason why I like Breland especially King Boranel, 1. He took a chance that the other nations wouldn't take and took the Refugees of the destroyed kingdom of Cyre into his nation with open arms, but Boranel prays that he won't come to regret that decision and another desicion he made was forcing the parliment to pass the law that made warforged citizens of Breland with the same type of rights and freedoms that Brelands enjoy, and ever since Boranel did that all warforged came to love Boranel and started to migrate to Breland under the banner of Boranel. I also see that if war breaks out that all if not all maybe most of the warforged will come the Breland and King Boranels side in the next war. |
| #4skrap-sanFeb 23, 2008 1:40:10 | I have falen for Q'barra, the Final frontier of Khorvaire. I really like how part of the country are strugling to maintain the ideals of old Galifar, while others just want to do what ever they are doing. And lastly there is the Lizardfolks who want everyone not them out. Now add some old demonic ruins, a crazy dragon with delusions of divinity and you got yourself a country, and one heck of an adventure. |
| #5revan4444Mar 01, 2008 5:31:44 | I've been reading the info on the Ancient Elven Kingdom Aerenal and I have fallen for the Aerenal, well mostly cause my fav races are elves and humans. What I find interesting is that they dispise the undead but at the same time they live in a nation that has undead everywhere like the undying court etc. I find that quite a contradiction, I mean come on they hate the undead but they go about everyday lives with the undead wandering thru there nation. |
| #6skrap-sanMar 01, 2008 10:50:34 | they go about everyday lives with the undead wandering thru there nation. Not undead, Deathless, Undead in almost all effects except for the fact that they are created with positive energy due to several areas linked to the plane of positive things. (don't remember the name right now). There is a big and still subtle differense in that logic. |
| #7octaviusiiiMar 01, 2008 19:57:26 | Aerenal and its Deathless are linked to Irian, the Eternal Day; the undead are linked to Mabar, the Eternal Night. I honestly can't think of a single favorite nation. The Demon Wastes are amazing - orcs, selflessly fighting to keep the rest of Khorvaire safe. Lhazaar - cold greenery, a temperate Caribbean. Q'barra - a land where one can go and make one's fortune away from the cursed lands of Xen'drik. Aundair - home of culture and magic. Yeah, I like 'em all. |
| #8AshlockMar 01, 2008 22:27:42 | Karrnath, without a doubt. There is a tragic evil in its king, and a dark, militant northland is just...cool. |
| #9the_ubbergeekMar 02, 2008 21:49:35 | Karrnath, without a doubt. There is a tragic evil in its king, and a dark, militant northland is just...cool. Castlevania-ish. |
| #10soltaresMar 03, 2008 11:45:46 | Q'barra and Xendrik seem like the best for straight-up adventuring. Karrnath seems like the best for cold-blooded intrigue. Kindred-style anything-goes hate-beyond-death power-playing with a zesty dash of Klingon Rite of Ascencion. |
| #11nexusdragonMar 03, 2008 14:41:23 | I cannot shake my love for Droaam. Populated by everything that a Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms campaign calls Dungeon Fodder, the prospect of a nation ruled by beasts deemed to low to have rights makes the underdog in me howl for delight. A lot of reasons for my liking the least organized and least likely to be recognized: 1) Ruled by a covey of hags. They don't need advisers . . . they are their own cabinet. AND they can hold their own in physical combat. Sure, Boranel can swing a sword, but can he also raised the dead, cast curses, and have a remote sensing object linked to him as intimately as a hag's eye? 2) Gnolls. I can't explain my love for them, but the hyena people make me warm on the inside. The fact that they are the most populous standing force on Khorvaire is really appealing and one of my favorite BBEG ideas is a gnoll who figures out a way to organize them. 3) Outcast races are accepted. Half-ogres and mongrelfolk, possibly my two favorite races of all time, are like diamonds in the rough in that country. Not only are they accepted, but they have closer links to other countries and may find purpose as emissaries. 4) Really cool NPCs:
|
| #12ShiftkittyMar 03, 2008 15:03:57 | Xen'drik, definitely. My players thought they could throw me by asking to play drow. I gave them two transported Menzoberranyr drow, one native drow, and one warforged. They like playing on Xen'drik, and I like DMing it! |
| #13revvecorMar 03, 2008 16:14:48 | Sure, Boranel can swing a sword, but can he also raised the dead, cast curses, and have a remote sensing object linked to him as intimately as a hag's eye? How Dare You Belittle King Boranel!! If he felt like it he could destroy the Hags with a mere snap of his fingers. ![]() Jokes aside, I like Q'Barra the best for reasons already stated. |
| #14theapokalypseshovelMar 06, 2008 2:02:43 | I personally like Zilargo and Valenar. I like Zilargo because I find the idea of a neat orderly country, that is held together by webs of intrigue and a shadow government with near unlimited jurisdiction, to have very interesting implications. I like Valenar largely because of it's hostile culture. You have a majority of humans that generally don't like outsiders, elves that are always actively seeking out battle, and a huge desert that is contains many uncharted manifest zones to Shavarath. I think it is one of the most foreign places on Khorvaire that is not dominated by monstrous races. |
| #15elrodianAug 26, 2008 15:09:32 | my the nations i like are Aundair, Thrane, Aerenal and Droaam |
| #16mystrichAug 26, 2008 15:20:42 | Karnath and Talenta are by far my favorites. It seems no one ever gives them attention, but Zombies walking around and Dinosaur taming halfling barbarians make badass nation ideas. |
| #17minoritarianAug 26, 2008 15:53:50 | I'm a Lhaazar fan myself. Something about building up a fleet and setting myself up as a prince appeals to me. Plus the Blood of Vol being one of the primary religions of the area gets me even more interested. |
| #18Magicstar1Aug 26, 2008 15:59:36 | I quickly fell in love with the flavour of Aundair. I have one of my RPGA Xen'drik Expeditions characters hailing from there. The flavour of the military and the general feel of the country just work for me. Off late I seem to draw a liking to Karnath. Been reading on some Russian and East European history and like the feel I and inspiration I can draw from them. I'm contemplating of setting my new campaign there. What do other people love or have significantly altered on certain regions? |
| #19aseranAug 26, 2008 16:45:19 | Stormreach. Such a beautifully, beautifully realized pit of vile awesomeness. |
| #20NivedAug 26, 2008 16:53:29 | Its changed over the years. It was the dinosaur riding halflings of Talenta that sold me on the setting. Once I read it I came to really dig Darguun and Droaam. Then I usually immerse myself in whatever nation I'm running game in at the time, so I've been neck deep in Breland, Karrnath, Q'Barra, and most recently Stormreach. I like Stormreach a lot. |
| #21That_Blasted_SomoflangeAug 26, 2008 21:01:57 | Brelend is good. I like Boranal, how he freed the warforged, possibly giving rise to the LoBster (Lord of Blades), and the Brelish 9th cavalry. I mean, troops riding bears. All you yanks, know we Canadians have these right? But, as much as I like Breland, I have to say that my heart would have to lie with Darguun. Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor is a leader that truly wants a better life for his peoples. Making (Ghaal'dar) Hobgoblins, and to a lesser extent (Golin'dar) goblins and Guul'dar (bugbear), an honourable an prideful race is great. I've started reading the latest Eberron novel, the Doom of Kings, Legacy of Dhakaan book one and it's cemented my love of everything about this nation. If I ever get to play in an 4e Eberron game, I'm going to beg to be allowed to play a Ghaal'dar (Hobgoblin) warlord.. or a Duur'kala a female Ghaal'dar (hobgoblin) bard. Ekhaas rocks BTW, best bard ever. |
| #22NivedAug 26, 2008 21:15:54 | One of these days I need to use the Brelish 9th in a game... but I never liked running mounted combat in 3.5, haven't tried in 4th... suppose I'd need to make Magebred Bear stats to start with... |
| #23bossemeyerAug 27, 2008 1:14:09 | Personally i am torn between two... On is Like a Nation that really isn't and the other is a Nation that really isn't... House Thuranni And Valenar... I don't care if the House Thuranni isn't a real nation... |
| #24eehamburgAug 27, 2008 12:13:02 | Does it have to be a current nation? I am enthralled with the Dhakaani Empire. It no longer exists but it last for about 11,000 years. That is longer than recorded history on our own planet. What that culture must have been like. What did they do? Who were these people? stuff like that and the remains of it all can capture imaginations for lifetimes. |
| #25jonastyAug 27, 2008 13:35:25 | I'm split as I love all of the Eberron setting. But there are a few that jump out at me over the rest. 1) The Lhazzar Princ. I have always wanted a pirate/sea based campaign, and maybe someday I'll get it, but the location is just fantastic and offers a lot of freedom. 2) The Eldeen Reaches. I really like the vast forrested expanse that parties can roam for weeks in and not see another sign of civilization. Towering redwoods and lost glens really get the imagination going. 3) The Shadow Marches. There is something truly intimidating to me to imagine the group slowly paddling there canoe-like boat along, surrounded for miles by swamp and marsh lands, occasionally seeing some 20 foot long snake gliding along. With all 3 of these, it really seems to come down to a sense of isolation. I like the idea that the adventurers are far from home and without backup. Don't get me wrong, Sharn and Stormreach are great locations that I love to run as well and are great places for the party to run to at the end of the adventure. But there is something thrilling to me having a party on their own with no easy solutions in sight, especially in such a cosmopolitan setting as Eberron. The fact that there are such easy solutions and amenities in the world makes it that much more shocking when they're taken away. No inns to sleep in, shops to buy weapons, NPCs to bail them out, etc. Just them, the equipment they have, and their wits. |
| #26quale_Aug 27, 2008 14:01:38 | Aerenal is my fave, I like having it on the same planet with Evermeet then Demon Wastes Adar Lhazaar Principalities - but they're undead Darguun - have this as a remnant of hobgoblin land of Haeekkrukha in Impiltur |
| #27DDiceRCAug 27, 2008 14:03:12 | I'm just starting to get a taste of Eberron, but I find Zilargo and the Library fascinating-so much so that, for the first time ever, I am actually considering playing a Gnome when we start our Eberron campaign. (That may not happen until 4e Eberron comes out, but we've come to like it so much we may not wait now...) |
| #28eehamburgAug 27, 2008 14:18:37 | If you are thinking about a gnome, be careful as the gnome might be thinking about you. Beware the Trust. |
| #29angelus_obscuraAug 27, 2008 14:59:58 | My favorite nation is one that has not yet found itself. The Khoravar nation. Half-elves are my favorite race, as they are the best of humans and elves. In whatever game I play, if I am a half-elf, my over-reaching goals are to unite half-elves and create a home for them/us. |
| #30LeviMilesAug 27, 2008 19:09:14 | Because I'm still new to DMing as a whole, I really don't have a favorite. I have to say though that I am rather looknig forward to running Thrane. Theocracies are really interesting, and becasue I picture alot fo the country very church-like I relate it to the Vatican and the Roman Catholics. For some reason, even though I'm not religous, I'm completely captivated. Plus, I really enjoy playing mucis in the background themed for where the PCs are. Thrane screams Latin Roman Cathlic Hymns! |
| #31SiberysAug 27, 2008 22:11:21 | 1) Cyre /the Mournland. Much rockage. Poor, poor Cyre. She lost everything in the war, despite being the only nation with a legitimate claim on the throne (to begin with; I'll not argue with you war-mongering curs from the lesser nations who despoiled my beautiful Cyre over the aftermath of your betrayal of Galifar.) :P 2) Zilargo. My prime example for cool gnomes. 3) The nations of Old Sarlona, and Adar. I seriously wanted to run a Sarlonan campaign after reading SoS. |
| #32bailey91Aug 28, 2008 17:11:39 | Cyre is my favorite. In the Last War they didn't do anything that dragged their name through the dirt *cough*Karrnath and Thrane*cough*! They were the most culturely advanced nation that spun arcane rings around Aundair. Aundair may have had Arcane might, but Cyre had the ingenuity to diversify their spellcasting. I personally believe that Cyre could've won the Last War: Thrane was losing it's edge, Karrnath was constantly riddled with plague and famine, Aundair isn't worth mention, and Breland half-assed its way through the war. It's fun playing a Cyran, knowing you came from the greatest nation brought low by the petty jealousy of everyone else. It is something you can be smug about! |
| #33mystrichAug 28, 2008 18:51:02 | Karrnath really didn't have a choice with it's deal with the devil. And it did eventually break it off. |
| #34bailey91Aug 28, 2008 20:01:06 | The battle of ethics will always try at Mankind's soul. If I may quote General Sherman, "The crueler war is, the sooner it ends." Did Karrnath have a choice? Absolutely. Saying no meant losing the war, so it was imperitive to say yes, but the extent of their atrocities (the sack of Metrol, anyone?) goes beyond ethics and straight in morals. The Karrns robbed bodies and turned them into undead, I believe that's called overkill. I'm just saying, the Cyrans are the only military force that acted with honor throughout the Last War. P.S.- Screw the traitorous Valenar! |
| #35mystrichAug 28, 2008 20:11:06 | Perhaps I'm a fan of Karrnath and that's why, but I always felt Kaius should be LG. Dedicated to protecting his country at any cost, including sacrificing himself (even if it was to vampire hood rather than death). |
| #36capfalconAug 28, 2008 21:09:11 | Perhaps I'm a fan of Karrnath and that's why, but I always felt Kaius should be LG. Dedicated to protecting his country at any cost, including sacrificing himself (even if it was to vampire hood rather than death). But the thing that makes him Evil is that very fact. He's willing to protect his country at any cost. He cares about his country, and that's pretty much it. I think he'd throw another one of the countries under the proverbial bus to save his people. In fact, that's a cool idea for a campaign. Kaius was never able to sue for peace, because all the other countries were just fine going ahead with the war. He causes the Mourning somehow in order to give him the ability to bring everyone else to the table. The PCs discover this, but, if they bring this knowledge to the public, the cause the Last War to start up again. Probably starting with Karrnath getting mobbed by everyone else. Unless Kauis can cause another Mourning... Anyway, I find Breland and Stormreach the most impressive. Breland is just pretty awesome, and Sharn doubly so. Stormreach just because Xendrix adventures almost write themselves. |
| #37mystrichAug 28, 2008 21:44:48 | But the thing that makes him Evil is that very fact. He's willing to protect his country at any cost. He cares about his country, and that's pretty much it. I think he'd throw another one of the countries under the proverbial bus to save his people. But he'd also betray anyone for his country like he did Vol. Using this logic, he should be chaotic. |
| #38skrap-sanAug 29, 2008 1:44:17 | I really don't know what country is my favorite anymore. As a player I love the Attitude of Aundair, their swashbuckling attitude combined with their love for good food and friends. As a DM I love Q'barra, the mix of wild wild west feeling, jungles, and ancient ruins of ultimate evil. Its just to juicy to pas up on. |
| #39Arcane_GuyverAug 29, 2008 2:06:49 | Favorite nation? Gotta be Aundair. Aundair dares!! |
| #40capfalconAug 29, 2008 22:51:08 | But he'd also betray anyone for his country like he did Vol. Using this logic, he should be chaotic. Wait, what? Kaius backed out of his deal with the devil when he realized that Vol held all the cards, and she was starting to play them. He didn't care that the Emerald Claw was going out and blowing up Thranish civilans, and what not. He did mind, however, when Vol started to try to rule his country in his place. As I said before, Kaius is Evil because he doesn't care about the means of helping his people. If he could have blown up Cyre and ended the war, I think he would have without a second thought. The fact that he is both Evil and the largest proponent for peace out of the Five Nations is what makes him an interesting character. But he's still Evil. |
| #41davethebrave371Aug 31, 2008 13:23:40 | Man, this is tough. But I think I'd have to say Zilargo. The idea of a Big Brother Utopia as opposed to a Big Brother Dystopia is really interesting. And Eberron's gnomes made me love gnomes again. Xen'drik, The Mournland and the Demon Wastes aren't really "nations" per se, but if you count them, they probably all beat out Zilargo if only for adventuring opportunity. But none of them are really nations. There are sections of each claimed by different factions, so those sections could fall under a wanna-be nation. In which case it'd go "whatever the Lord of Blades' territory is", Ashtakala and Stormreach, then Zilargo. Thronehold is also way up there for me, but if Stormreach can be considered a "nation", then Thronehold just beats out Zilargo. |
| #42goblin_prideSep 02, 2008 18:22:06 | Does it have to be a current nation? I am enthralled with the Dhakaani Empire. It no longer exists but it last for about 11,000 years. That is longer than recorded history on our own planet. What that culture must have been like. What did they do? Who were these people? stuff like that and the remains of it all can capture imaginations for lifetimes. I have to agree. But if I must choose a modern nation, I would say Darguun, Droam, the Shadow Marches or Valenar. The remnants of the goblinoid empire, orc druids and an elven screaming horde? I can't tell if it's me that needs counselling or his Infernal Bovine Majesty. |
| #43prodigal_orcSep 02, 2008 21:20:46 | A favorite nation, though pick; -I like Zilargo, so clean everything happens behind the curtains. -I love the wild areas both Q'barra and the Shadow marches, not just any wilderness but each with unique factions roaming around them. -And the monster nations Darguun and Droaam (Big Gnoll fan!) But I think all the regions of Eberron have something going for them. Right now I'm reading the FR 4th edition campaign guide (I'm a FR neophite btw) and I'm not impressed nor inspired at all. Eberron 4e can't be here soon enough for me. |
| #44nerdicusSep 03, 2008 1:57:02 | I'll get in on this action! Favorite nation toss up between Breland(purely for Sharn. THe rest of the nation could get stuffed for all I care but Sharn is too radical) Droaam and Darguun. Droaam because the idea of a nation of monsters ruled by medusas is too cool. In my campaigns there is an equal part of good and evil fiefdoms spread across the nation. In particular there is a fiefdom ruled by a minotaur that is the main farming source of food stuff in Droaam. This community is totally LG and can be a great safe haven for weary travelers. Durguun because I love all things Goblinoid. Now, those are all tied for first, then come Q'barra, Shadow marches, and the Principalities. And I too love the Dhakaani empire of old, and in my campaigns the new Dhakaani empire is very close to making a move for power. |
| #45elrodianSep 03, 2008 9:34:29 | i would have to say that i do love the Queen of Stone and her city/people it is soooooooooooo cool. There is a thread that talk about what the person thinks it looks like and i love what they came up with. |
| #46trickydevl666Sep 03, 2008 12:26:06 | I definitely have to say Karnath is my favorite. I think their solution was very clever. I mean come on, if you had a choice of losing a war, or raising your fallen to fight for you again, which would you do? Two soldiers for the price of one... well the price of one soldier and quite a bit of black onyx.... Did Karnath have a black onyx mine? Because if they didn't produce it themselves... that's a lot of onyx to import... |
