Fight to the Death? Kalashtar vs. the Inspired

I've been thinking about an encounter with an Inspired ambassador (in Sharn). However, one of the PCs in my group is Kalashtar. Will this automatically go badly? Will they recognize each other as enemies? If so, are the social restrictions of polite, law-abiding society enough to keep them from immediate attack? If this encounter happens, what parts of the Eberron background are going to come into play?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

cheers,
Meshon

I'm facing a similar encounter soon, and I'm already looking forward to it
And to add a little spice to the soup: This is going to happen in Zilargo, and they already fear the little ones from what they've heard so far.

Unless your player tries to disguise himself as a regular human being, I'm pretty certain, they recognize each other on a subliminal level as "one of a kind"; but I wouldn't say that they know about each other's allegiance by sight alone - obviously the appearance of the NPC as an ambassador might tip-off my player.

I have no idea how my Kalashtar Player will react to an Inspired (including psionic guards); the ambassador will definatly try to provoke an aggresive behavior but will remain calm and defensive herself. She doesn't know that he's around yet, but having him restrained, locked away or (even better) dead will suit the DD's plan perfectly.

Societal Norms Should keep them from each others throats.

At least in publice.

The Inspired won't actively attack a Kalashtar who is having a meeting with one of their ambassador's based entirely on Race- it would look bad for them; and the Inspired care about how they look to the Khorvairian masses. They can wage the publicity war; the war of information; the slandering- thats all fine. But to actively attack someone based on race is another step.

As for the Kalashtar- i suppose that depends rather fully on a) Your player and b) is the Kalashtar aware that killing the Inspired Ambassador won't actually hurt the Quori? Not all of them are (those raised outside of Adar especially might not be aware).

Its much more likely that the Kalashtar would get sized up in the meeting, his friends marked for decontamination and extermination by "unknown forces" and assassins or thugs hired to take them out at a later date. Or the Quori might sponsor the group just to watch the Kalashtar squirm as he tries to figure out what the diabolical plan is and how to stop it- all while being distracted from the true goals of his enemy. OR if you want to run it a little bit more Inglorious Basterds esc- they fight, things blow up, enemies die- and the Kalashtar goes underground (or doesn't make it out).

Keep in mind that both Kalashtar and Inspired are mortal-quori hybrids, and the quori spirits are immortal. On either side, the quori are patient.

The Inspired may be immeasurably evil, but they are also immeasurably patient. They spent centuries taking control of Sarlona. I think their plan for Khorvaire is different (they already have Vessels that they can import, and they don't need to cause wars to slowly spread the Path of Inspiration), but whatever the details, they probably don't benefit if the public gets the impression that the Inspired are violent. The Inspired will play it cool.

Different factors ought to keep the kalashtar in check. They may not care about PR like the Inspired, but they can't go around attacking the Inspired without getting in serious trouble and undermining their cause. Remember that the quori aren't even known to most people of Eberron. A kalashtar can't kill someone and claim, "He was Inspired!" without simply seeming a madman.

Finally, what's the point of getting hostile? Both know that the other guy is, in a way, immortal. The Inspired, if killed, simply claims another empty vessel. It might irritate him to have to grab another body, but big deal. An individual kalashtar, on the other hand, possesses an individual identity, but still shares a quori spirit with hundreds of siblings, so his death won't change the game.

It's also pretty important to note that The Inspired and The Kalashtar wouldn't nescessarily turn every encounter into a competition. Both are playing the long game and a kalashtar's punch-up at the embassy or an Inspired's petty little murderous ambush outside won't stop the subversion of Khorvaire or the Turning of Dal Quor's age.

The Inspired Ambassadors are usually not engaged in the war against the Kalashtar on anything other than the Khorvaire Charm Offensive. They might mention the meeting to their Quori spirit next time it stops by to shunt out their conciousness and that may get passed down the line to the Dreaming Dark, but the ambassadors themselves are usually not involved in stamping out the Kalashtar.

If they meet plain-faced, they will probably recognise each other's nature and their mutual emnity.
For today, however, if the PC's request is of mutual benefit, the relationship doesn't have to be outright antagonistic, even if it chafes the Kalashtar to get help from his immortal enemy.
(There are even Quori who feel the subversion of Khorvaire is unnescessary, so who knows, they may even become unlikely allies in the future.)

Once you bring personality into the equation though, a lot of that may go out of the window.
A hot-blooded kalashtar barbarian might flip the table over during discussions or a sadistic Inspired may toy with his guest as far as he is able to do in secret or frame the PCs for the murder of his aide, just for a laugh.

The potential for it to go any which way is quite exciting

Thanks for the awesome ideas. It looks like this encounter will be postponed until the new year, so I have some time to think about it. The only thing I know I want to happen for sure is to have the Inspired ambassador telepathically say to the Kalashtar "No one is alone" which is a Riedran saying and usually a comforting one. In this case it will definitely be a threat!

Ah, yes. During our Q'barra-based campaign I used the Riedran ambassador a lot in order to mess with the group's kalashtar(Du'ulora spirit too). She itched for a chance for an open fight that the polite, refined ambassador wouldn't give.

Dance Puppet's Dance! I love the Quori. So much fun to be had when fighting a perfect, immortal ma... spirit. I meant to say spirit!
