Also, you could always just use another adventure hook. For example, I'm doing the same adventure with the "Terrible Secret" hook by replacing Fairhaven with Fort Orcbane, old wizard with House Orien and the King's Road with the road between Greywall and Orcbane.
Easiest fix I could see would be a Dragonshard, but I don't see any real problem with using the hide as-is. In eberron, the dragons are more aloof, but their hide is still valuable as a crafting material, probably even moreso and not all beings would have qualms about hunting dragons without consideration for sentience.

I have only read the Eberron campaign setting and parts of two novels, so I was under the assumption that dragons were more myth in Eberron.
But just to ease your concern one of Keith's short Eberron stories (from Dragons Worlds Afire) had a polymorphed silver dragon getting her head cut off in sharn. Everyone was very surprised when the headless body of a silver dragon came bursting out the side of an airship over Sharn (they revert back to original form when dead). Don't worry I didn't spoil anything in that story, that's the murder mystery that has to be solved, that's all just the set up. Yeah everyone was utterly stunned, a dragon... in SHARN who ever heard of such a thing!

The island state is named for Abel Tasman, who was the Dutch explorer who discovered it (though he named it Van Diemen's Land, after the then-Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies). There are a lot of things named "Tasman" in Australia and New Zealand./sarcasm

Also, many people do consider them myths. Elves know they do, as would probably many scholars. But other than their former war with the elves centuries ago, no one has seen one. If someone knew about them though, they would only know they are extremely powerful beings who live on an island no one has ever returned from.
The above suggestion was right probably, as Dragonshards are going to be a huge resource in Eberron. Say it has special properties of protection. I don't know the exact adventure, but one of Eberrons rare metals may also work as a replacement.

Yea, I decided that the dwarf in question is asking after his "dragon hide" but it will turn out to be a sheet of some other kind of scales, something of an exotic nature, but not something the PCs can use on their own for the time being. I want my son to have a tough time deciding to turn over the quest item and get the xp, or keep it and make use of it later on.
