| #1DargurdSep 19, 2008 0:44:51 | Hi All, Is there enough crunchy goodness in the 4Ed FR Players Guide to make it worth while picking up for use in Eberron ? If anyone has already done this then I would appreciate your thoughts. Regards... |

The big new things are: Races: Drow... they're not that FRy that they wouldn't work as Xen'drik Drow. The genasi are another matter. I think they could fit into Eberron, but it requires some work for a backstory. Swordmage: I reckon it fits right into Eberron: A magic-skilled fighter in relatively light armour? Yes, please. Dark Pact Warlock: well, personally, I think, there are never too much dark things for evil cultists and it also fits the flavour of the Umbragen in Xen'drik to a certain extent. Paragon Paths: Aside from the names and the three genasi paths, they're pretty generic and fit in. Regions: This part is obviously useless. Feats: Some feat goodness is always good, though you have to reskin/ditch the eladrin and elf feats, as they're emulating the subraces (Sun Elf/Moon Elf or Wild Elf/Wood Elf), and the genasi feats - your mileage varies with your view of the genasi. The Channel Divinity feats maybe useless, but since they are there, they are a good base for developing new ones - e.g. for the Eberron pantheon. Rituals: Also pretty useful, though it's a thematic choice if you want to allow the Raise Land ritual at 30th. Personally, I think the really good crunch is worth it, and the regional stuff is at least an inspiring read. Cheers, LT. |
| #3ieattrollsforbreakfastSep 19, 2008 6:19:18 | I was going to ask the same question. Thanks for the review, LT. I was considering just getting everything I need from the D&D Compendium, but printed books are always better. |
| #4DargurdSep 19, 2008 9:25:03 | I was going to ask the same question. Thanks for the review, LT. So would you just convert all the stuff from the 3.5 compendium then or have I missed a new 4ed one ? |
| #5ieattrollsforbreakfastSep 19, 2008 10:24:30 | So would you just convert all the stuff from the 3.5 compendium then or have I missed a new 4ed one ? D&D Compendium This has the 4E PHB, DMG and Dragon magazine on it at the moment, and in October it will be updated with every other release, including the FRPG. It's free for now, but you'll have to pay in October. It's $5/month for the package with Dragon and Dungeon magazines, the D&D Compendium and bonus tools. There's a bit more detailed information here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/insidernews/20080917a |
| #6the_ubbergeekSep 19, 2008 11:53:10 | Swordmage: Maybe a tradition from a culture mixing martial and magical prowess, like the elves in Aerenal or Valenar... Or the goblinoid heirs of the Empire? Or the cyrean disapora? Regions: Reworked and tooled, that could be usefull if you DM liked it. Feats: Racial feats wheren't there already? And channeling faith power... Races: There is a thread in the other section talking of Genasi in Eberron - and the Infernal Bovine talked too! Also, there was talk on the Spellscared in the other section. |
| #7wymarcSep 19, 2008 14:59:20 | I see swordmage becoming a base class in my games |
| #8need_a_lifeSep 20, 2008 13:18:15 | Swordmages? Aundiar, Cyre, Valenar and Zilargo all seem excellent sources. Channel Divinity feats: Keep 'em! Heck, I am using the PHB CD feats as-is (no renaming), using the names (Bahamut, Melora etc.) simply as names of a saint of a particular religion. The PCs get to describe the saint, of course ;) |
| #9douglas_zuver_dupSep 21, 2008 9:12:04 | The book is allowed in my two online games (without regional benefits): Lost in Xen'drik: Everice Lost in Xen'drik: Stormreach At least 77 of the 160 pages are really good player material usable in Eberron. One could adapt the regional benefits if you wanted to take the time. |
| #10leowulfSep 26, 2008 20:56:31 | Swordmage: Maybe a tradition from a culture mixing martial and magical prowess, like the elves in Aerenal or Valenar... Or the goblinoid heirs of the Empire? Or the cyrean disapora? I think that Aundair would be most likely to have fielded Swordmages in the Last War. The integration of the Arcane into their fighting really fits well here. Regions: Reworked and tooled, that could be usefull if you DM liked it. I like this a lot. The regions make a very good basis for the 5 Kingdoms and other regions players could come from. Races: There is a thread in the other section talking of Genasi in Eberron - and the Infernal Bovine talked too! Very Cool - I want to check this out! Also, there was talk on the Spellscared in the other section. Yes - using Spellscars as the basis for Dragonmarks is a very good idea! |
| #11DargurdOct 18, 2008 14:08:54 | Well finally got round to picking the book up today and ive got to say wow. There is plenty of crunchy goodness to use in my Eberron campaign - lets hope the Eberron Players Guide is just as good ! |
| #12paideiaOct 19, 2008 3:10:10 | Personally, I think the really good crunch is worth it, and the regional stuff is at least an inspiring read. Others have noted the excellent opportunities for incorporating the swordmage, and I posted my ideas for divinity feat conversions (both PH and FR) in another thread. I would like to say just how incredibly useful I found the regional benefits section, though. It might seem useless at first, but what it really does is create a benchmark for what you can do with regions. I was so inspired by this that I ended up writing regional benefits for my own Eberron campaign. For those interested I have created another post with my write-up here: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=17078671#post17078671 |
| #13rauricOct 19, 2008 9:13:53 | An elf player in my EB game has taken the elf feat that lets him roll 1d4 when he uses his Racial Encounter. There is a lot of things that can be used for EB in this FR book. |
