Gearforged in Eberron?

Having picked up an issue of Kobold Quarterly, not a bad magazine, and seeing a new race called the gearforged I have decided to add them into my Eberron game that I have just started.

The party is going through a modified version of 'The Forgotten Forge' from the 3.5 Eberron Campaign Setting.  At current the party is underneath the sewers of Sharn and making their way to an ancient Cannith strong hold.  They are searching a for a vault that is said to contain a Pre-Galifar schema.  Within the vault I plan to have them find plans for a pre warforged constructs that will be labeled 'GF-w1/R.3.D.

The primary differences between gearforged and warforged shall be their creation process.  While we all know that warforged are created using creation forges and aquired sentience during the process, as well as the possibility of a soul.  The gearforged on the other hand are full automatons that are powered by 'spark stones', these are stones created by fusing the souls of the dying into precious elements that then act as a power source for the gearforged.  The process also imbues the memories and personality of the person into their form.

I really like the idea of adding them but not yet sure how to fit them in.  My primary idea is to have had Cannith try to purge them within a few years of their initial creation.  However a few of them subscribed and have been hiding for centuries as they stayed out of the war and out of the way of history as a whole.  Yet I am unsure where I want to go with this past that.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Reminds me somewhat of the Karrnathi elite undead creation process but with Automatons instead of skeleton/zombie bodies -maybe this is an old Vol (pre-war) plot: Take-over a Cannith stronghold, bind souls to generate a secret army. House Cannith could have activated the self-destruct and caved-in the surrounding area around the stronghold.

Or maybe this was during the War of the Mark conflict in Sharn, the Gearforged dying souls belong to aberrant/dragonmarked members…

I'm really liking the idea of the Mark of the War Idea.  Could havve gearforged hiding out working on plots to help overthrow the houses, this could work very well as I have two players who are both connected to the houses.  One of which is a marked heir to the Cannith name.

Good suggestion I will have to look into how to do this.  Thanks.

Possible Origin:

Metallife went to visit the Mournland after his freedom was granted at the end of the last war. While he toured the scarred lands, he found some unusual gems. The gems seemed odd to him but he couldn't understand why.

One day he sat and held a gem. He stared  at it for over a day. He thought light flowwing through the gem had an extremely faint pulse. He tried to use magic to understand the stone. The revellation caught him by surprise. The gems contained the soul of someone from Cyre.

Metallife didn't know what destroying the gems would do. He decided to try an construct new bodies for lost souls. The complexity of a Warforged body were beyond his means and knowledge. Instead the bodies were built from gears and scraps he could find.

The gearforged as he named them mostly stayed with him. Most remembered little of their previous existance. Those that do remember their former lives seemed to originally mostly be warforged.

Unfortunately the Mornland took it toll on Metallife. For unknown reasons, his body began to fall apart. He and his followers have begun searching Cannith strongholds for some way the saved the creator of the gearforged. Some have also expressed interest in creating a more resiliant body for themselves.
