Genies are a nomadic planar culture that roams the planes. It is unknown where they originated (an elemental plane? a plane destroyed or taken over by the Delkyer?), but they have spread across the planes. Their numbers are not great, no more than 100 per plane. The two exceptions are their 2 cities, one located on Fernia, and one on Syrania.

These two cities have 500 - 1000 genie each, along with many other planar beings. The Syrania city in particular is known by planar travelers for it's sprawling markets, where everything can be bought, bartered, or stolen. It is also hailed as a neutral city, where any sentient are free to do business. Though there are laws against murder, assault, and robbery, there are few laws. Those few laws are ruthlessly enforced by the Efreeti Guard.

The Fernian city is much different. It is a fortress, built to withstand to attacks of the plane's other denizens (Azer, Archons, and Salamanders). The city is protected by the Efreeti Guard. The city requires a visa (available from city officials in the Syranian city). The city's laws are much stricter and are enforced under martial law. The city is anything but free, but it's denizens are safe from the rigors of the plane of fire. It is commonly used as a staging point for trade of Fernia's resources to other planes. It's powerful protectors and their intolerance of any perceived challenge also makes it an excellent place to hide.

There are several types of Genie:

Efreet: Efreeti are soldiers. The Efreeti Guard is trained in their citadel in Fernia. They are some of the most skilled soldiers across the planes.

Djinn: Djinni are government officials, merchants, and mages. They are the head caste of the Genie.

Genasi: Genasi, also known as Janni, are the bottom of Genie society. They perform the day-to-day activities that keep society running. Although they are the lowest class of Genie, they have lives more comparable to those of the middle class in the 5 nations.

Genie in Eberron:

When the Giants began exploring the planes, they enslaved many of the beings they met. After the elves were brought from Thelanis, the Genies were next. Dijinni were bound and forced to assist the giants in their magical endeavors. Efreeti were tricked and bound to chambers, made into guardians by their new masters. Gensai were used much like the elves. Many of these bindings remain to this day, though the sanity of those who are bound may be questionable. The Gensai were freed at the same time the charms enslaving the elves were broken. Some joined the elves in their rebellion, the survivors were taken back to the planes when their more powerful cousins broke their bonds when the dragons shattered the continent. Those who didn't join the elves hid, creating villages that may exist to this day.

Recently, some Dijinni have began looking into ways to free their brethren. Most notable is Zawabi, who has established a refuge in the northern Menechtarun Desert. Zawabi has bound himself to the valley, known as Zawabi's Refuge, to allow it to sustain life. Although he cannot leave the valley, his powerful magic prevents anyone he does not approve of from entering, and he has total knowledge of what happens in his valley. He will save any adventurers who come near the valley and can tell them of the surrounding landscape. In particular he tells them of the all the ruins near the valley, particularly the ones where Genies are still bound.

The Dragons of Argonessen are also known to do trade with the Genies, and some may found in Io'Lokar, or debating in The Tapestry.

Although the Riedrans restrict planar travel, there are Genies in Sarlona. They may be found in Syrkarn, or there may be a group living among the high peaks of Adar.
