| #1NivedSep 23, 2008 16:13:09 | I call out to the community for some ideas. This weekend, in my Stormreach campaign the party is going to take part in the Annual Games of Stormreach's Red Ring, the Cleric and the Paladin are both quite excited as I've tied the event to Brightblade, a holiday dedicated to Dol Dorn that coincides with the annual games (figure that was intentional... or maybe just happy coincidence between the books) Anyway I have several encounters planned for this, a defeated foe returned to face them in the arena, some Drow warriors whom have come out of the wilds to put themselves to the test against the outlander warriors, the Swords of Karrn (who I've been meaning to use), the Iron Watch. But while I was thinking about all this... I thought to myself, "Should I design the games for them to win it or should I just lay out a number of encounters and make them actually work for it, see how far they make it up the ladder?" Maybe they win, maybe they don't. So the thing is I want some colorful competition, some memorable warriors to face in the ring... I brainstormed a few... then I thought why not turn to the community. What I'm asking for is personality, not huge backstories, but give me some warriors to put them against. I'm not even asking for stats... (not that I'd turn them down.) Warrior descriptions, deeds done by the competition to set off as a counterpoint to my own groups deeds. "In this corner hailing from Fairhaven, a group of wayfinders without peer! They've plumbed the depths of Khyber. Battled their way to the gates of Drooam and back" That sort of thing. 4E PCs 5th level Cleric, Paladin, Wizard, Warlock (somtimes a rogue, don't know if he'll be there this weekend.) Please, give me some four/five man teams with some character. Ones that show off Eberron. |
| #2GiloSep 23, 2008 18:39:13 | 1) A group of acrobats from the Cirque du Elephasi (House Phiarlan) will daze the PCs with shifty acts of acrobatics as they fight them in the ring. 2) a bunch of drunken halflings sailors will supply some comic relief as they drop down to the floor without even getting hit or vomit as an immediate-response to a PC attack. |
| #3mystrichSep 23, 2008 21:06:48 | Perhaps go a more classical route and an animal battle. The MM doesn't have lions, but a Dire Boar is level 6. |
| #4GiloSep 23, 2008 21:52:30 | Perhaps go a more classical route and an animal battle. The MM doesn't have lions, but a Dire Boar is level 6. I was not sure if you can bring pets to the ring, if pets are allowed - then drop in a group of Talenta Plains nomadic halflings wearing hunter masks along with some rare exotic trained dinosaurs. |
| #5GiloSep 24, 2008 8:16:58 | Perhaps go a more classical route and an animal battle. The MM doesn't have lions, but a Dire Boar is level 6. The above Circus group can contain a Lion tamer (with some whip attack power) his lion/tiger, the acrobats and an Illusionist. |
| #6GiloSep 24, 2008 8:40:41 | a Gnome Artificer with a mad-scientist attitude and an arsenal of exotic magical Xen'Drik weaponry is looking to impress potential buyers by showing off its effectiveness in the ring. He will use an array of different Homunculus, dancing weapons while flying around the arena with his elemental binded armor dropping Greek fire bombs. |
| #7naturaxSep 24, 2008 10:24:30 | Ebb: troll cleric of the Keeper, blood-red skin, wears a black hooded cloak, quiet and contemplative as she rends foes to shreds. |
| #8NivedSep 24, 2008 15:57:45 | Excellent stuff, I'm going to be busy stating this stuff up, might post some usable stats once I've had my fun. Think I might reconfigure a Bag of Tricks for that Gnome Artificer... use the same stats just make them construct themed. |
| #9GiloSep 24, 2008 16:09:30 | to set the atmosphere play the following before the ring fight: Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome Battle :D |
| #10goblin_prideSep 24, 2008 19:11:51 | Berek'gor, a Dhakaani bugbear captured in the Seawall mountains in Darguun and trying to get back home. He fights with a troupe of four city goblins that he's training to fight in the Dhakaani fashion. Berek'gor uses a spiked chain to trip up opponents and the goblins pounce on them with short blades once they're down. If the PCs are fluent in goblin, they should notice that Berek'gor is always barking orders at the goblins during the fight and that he calls them by their task rather than a proper name. His goblins are Flank, Hamstring, Puncture and Cut-throat. Berek'gor won't attack to kill unless all the goblins are dispatched, he'll trip up enemies until then so that the goblins can dispatch their enemies while they're flat-footed and prone. |
| #11oidSep 24, 2008 19:51:35 | as you may or may not see i love the Valenar elves. a troubled valenar warrior(dishonors his anscestors or some such) with nothing to lose, launches himself (or her- i'm an equel-oppertunity sadist) into battle in an attempt to appease her anscestors spirit in blood. elven or otherwise. hows that!:D |
| #12wymarcSep 25, 2008 14:55:38 | ?.) A Hill Giant also, will there be multiple fights each day? If not you might make them hard fights also also, are you running 3.5 or 4th? |

| #14NivedSep 25, 2008 17:50:45 | Huh, wonder what that was all about. Just checked back since my last post... anyway. This will be under fourth edition, there will be multiple fights on the first two days of the tournament, but I also plan on making the competition exponentially harder (balanced against higher level parties) as they advance. I was also considering Bonuses and penalties for crowd reaction. A floating 'momentum' meter of a sort. Say they take a standard action to pump up the crowd, they'll gain a +1 bonus on attacks for the rest of the encounter. If they score a crit the crowd will cheer and bolster their moral for say a +1 to atk. If they make a point to scout out the competition (I plan on actually writing out a proper tournament spread), in addition to knowing the opponent's tactics ahead of time (The gnolls are going to swarm the weakest prey, the Aundarians are going to try to keep their distance and deal out magical damage, etc) they'll get to have something maybe like a +2 bonus to a defense to a defense of their choice as an interrupt until the end of their next turn as they 'saw it coming'. There will be similar penalties, for cowardice or some such. While killing is discouraged its hardly 'illegal' in the ring. Something they'll have to watch out for against say, the gnolls who will gladly stab a downed opponent. There will of course be encounters outside of the ring, sabotage, unhappy spectators who just lost a huge bet because of the PCs, |
| #15lycanthropictoad_dupSep 25, 2008 17:59:56 | *Ignore this post please.* |
| #16oidSep 26, 2008 18:44:40 | Nived be sure to post that roster. and how about a gnome artificer testing a new construct, a sort of battle armor. it could be large size and powered by an elemental. |
| #17GiloSep 26, 2008 18:57:50 | Nived be sure to post that roster. yes we need the roster before your session so we can place bets (my money is on the Halflings) ;) |
| #18oidSep 26, 2008 19:36:12 | sorry had to split for a sec. but it should have a slam with a little extra radiant damage and an encounter close burst. Slam (standard,at-will) lightning +8 vs. AC; 1d10+5 damage, and 1d6 lightning damage. double strike (standard, recharge 6) lightning the name speaks for itself, make to slam attacks. thunder blast (standard, encounter) thunder +6 vs. Fortitude; close blast 3, 2d6+4 thunder damage. matrix malfuction (standard, when first bloodied) thunder, lightning +6 vs. Reflex; close burst 3, 3d6+4 lightning damage, and stunned (save ends). the construct thingy is dazed (save ends, no elite bonus to roll). half damage and no stunning on a miss. Str.20 Dex. 8 Wis. 7 Con.18 Int.3 Cha.9 i was just wanted to get some stuff down. it would start off with its thunder blast to soften 'em up, and then use its action point to rail some wup... sorry, it would use double strike. :D |
| #19oidSep 26, 2008 19:38:48 | oddly my bets on the troll cleric chick!![]() |
| #20NivedSep 26, 2008 21:58:30 | When it rains it pours. I hope I fan fit it all in, my plans were for a single elimination style tournament... because honestly I think a double elimination style tournament would make my head hurt. The number of matches I had settled on in my head was 7... which would make 128 starting teams, 4 man teams thats 512 contestants... and I have a guy with a masters degree in mathematics at my table he's going to notice. Don't know if I'll be able to use all these wonderful suggestions. I mean I could use them for background, other fights, especially when scouting out their next potential opponents... but my party can't fight them all, sadly. Naturax... I love the idea, I really do, but I'm going to have to reflavor it. I'm building an ongoing plot tied to a cult of The Shadow trying to bring a Mabar invasion (on par with the Quori War or the Daelkyr war) Of course I'm treading a fine line between what Undead belong to the Keeper and what Necromacy and foul magics and the power of Mabar style undead belong the The Shadow... but that's not a discussion for this thread. A team made up of this cult was already penciled into my original plan, (and will win the tournament if the PCs don't somehow beat them) I think the troll would make a wonderful addition and potential recurring villain. Goblin Pride: As much as I'd like to use your band of goblins in my tourney... I already had one set up. The party captured a war criminal Bugbear by the handle of Gru'Kaal 'the blond butcher' and sent him off to Breland where he was wanted.... only Gru'Kaal has powerful friends, hired himself a Sivis lawyer... and was acquitted. After months of trial and what not he's finally made his way back to Stormreach and will try to kill them in the ring. Working on stats and standings now... (nothing like burning the midnight oil, game is tormorrow night) Will post soon... I hope. |
| #21NivedSep 27, 2008 6:58:51 | “Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the One Hundred and Twenty First Red Ring Open! For the next four days you will bare witness to a spectacle that has no equal on Eberron. For the next four days you will see brave men, come here of their own free will. For the next four days you will see magic tested against steel, and courage square off against ferocity. For the next four days a dance as old as time will be played out before you. For the next four days you will see skill, and honor, savagery and depravity. For the next four days Free Men from around the world will come, under the watchful gaze of our Sovereign of Strength at Arms to spill blood, FOR YOU!” The Annual Games of the Red Ring are a 13 day affair, full of all sorts of spectacle. Blood Bound gladiators challenging for higher standing, all manner of beast and theme matches, a glorious orgy of violence. And in the midst of it all, an amateur competition open to all comers (except the blood bound... I want to save them in case any of my players want to pursue this whole gladiator thing further), its quite popular. The first rounds because they're so often hilarious as Stormreach's 'good ol boys' get drunk and beat the crap out of each other... and the later rounds for true skill and death matches without the Blood Bound's showmanship. The rules are simple. Competition is open to any who wish to join, however, the competition is only against other amateur competitors. The Blood Bound have their own tournaments. -Winner is determined by last team with viable warriors. -Warriors are no longer viable upon knock out, surrender, or death. -A warrior can surrender and be taken out of the ring at any time. -While precautions are taken for the safety of our amateur competitors, there is always a risk of permanent injury and death, as such participants must sign a waiver excusing the Blood Council of the Red Ring from any civil or criminal liability. The Party Griever: 5th level Dragonborn Charisma Paladin (formerly a fighter, he had a religious experience). A calm and focused warrior who will almost always end up taking the brunt of the battle. William Drake: 5th level Human Battle Cleric, Vassel of the Sovereign Host who finds most of his prayers directed at Dol Dorn. Ideal 5th level Tiefling Wand Wizard, absolutely loves his Master's Wand of Magic Missile, and uses it to push opponents into flanks or into terrain hazards from a safe distance. ??? 5th level Orc Strength Paladin. My warlock player decided he'd like to shelve his Warlock for awhile and try a different type of character. I'm allowing him to... but I have no background or even a name on this character yet. |
| #22oidSep 27, 2008 15:26:59 | Nived...![]() that looks awesome, man. good luck on the game. i'll check back to see how it went. |
