For the architecture and geography, a large central temple/magical laboratory building surrounded by concentric rings of stone huts in various states of collapse would fit the bill. The temple itself could have several levels above and/or below ground. If you have an idea for a large-scale magical doo-dad with little to no PC benefit (for example, a large stasis bubble generator that prevents organic matter from aging or rotting), a Giant temple is the place to put it! At the level you want to run it at, I would stick to standard jungle encounters: a small band of drow and/or lizardfolk, some smaller dinosaurs sunning themselves on the ancient rocks, and perhaps some auto-reset traps in the ruins themselves. An ogre with a couple of levels of druid (bump the Wisdom to 12) or a drow sorceress could serve as a boss and protector of the ancient temple. Instead of a boss fight, the boss could ask the PCs to solve a puzzle or riddle posed in the temple's hieroglyphics that has been befuddling him or her and preventing access to a particular part of the temple (which may or may not hide FABULOUS ARCANE SECRETS OF THE ANCIENTS!). (Not so hard to imagine if you use an ogre druid!) OK, those are the ideas that immediately sprang to mind... good luck! |

Xen'drik can be useful for building unique villains since so many ancient factions exist. The temples are exciting locales and you can make excuses for lots of treasure. A primordial Yeti with levels in warlock or shadowcaster would certainly be a unique villain. However, it would require a few books and maybe a mountain temple with traps.![]() |
