more specifically, I'm running Shadows of the Last War and my PCs have just secured the refinery where the map is held. They accepted Kaela's surrender and that's where the last session ended. Any ideas on how to make this a 3.5 skill challenge because i think it's the perfect place for one?

additionally, what happens if the PCs solve the skill challenge (if it can be) before getting the needed number of successes in general (even in 4e)? or am I looking at skill challenges in the wrong light?

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I'm still vague on how a skill challenge works differently from regular skill uses. I've not yet heard an explanation that has really clarified the difference.

Are you talking about a skill challenge to figure out where Whitehearth is? I didn't use a skill challenge at all. I had the battle map up to run the battle with kaela, and I just drew in the statues, fireplaces, and seals, and let them figure it out.

If you're talking about the party interrogating Kaela, well sure... Just throwing something together off the top of my head:

Goal: Get information out of the prisoner.
Primary Skills: Diplomacy (DC 18), Intimidate (DC 15) & Sense Motive (DC 15).
Secondary Skills: Knowledge (arcana, history, or religion) (DC 15).
Success Parameters: 4 successes before 3 failures.

Figuring out where Whitehearth is is more of a puzzle, if that's what you're talking about.
