| #1JohnLynchJul 31, 2008 3:36:02 | So I was wondering what sources there are for the history of Khorvaire? I know there is of course the ECS. However how much does the Forge of War have on before the Last War? How good is Sharn: City of Towers or Faiths of Eberron for historical information? |
| #2JohnLynchJul 31, 2008 6:21:10 | Edited out question I know the answer to. |
| #3rekkoJul 31, 2008 8:09:23 | This is self answered. Every book contains bits of useful fluff that the DMs can use for their own. If you are looking for something in particular, well start with the ECS, get as much details as you can. For example, the Gatekeepers. Then look at what other books might be related to them. Maybe Five Nation have the description of Breland or Aundair meeting the druids. I bet Faiths of Eberron has a good description of them. Maybe Dragons of Eberron talks about the dragon named Vvraak that teached druidic magic to the orcs. Races of Eberron surely talks about orcs. Magic of Eberron might talk about druidic magic. etc. There are a few things that aren't really developped yet. Like the planes of the remaining nations of Khorvaire aside of the Five Nations. If you are looking for things on the Hobgoblin empire of Dhakaan, you might not find a lot of answers. In such a case, turn to articles and the boards, and steal what you like. Rekko |
| #4JohnLynchJul 31, 2008 8:15:47 | Then look at what other books might be related to them. Maybe Five Nation have the description of Breland or Aundair meeting the druids. Right. The reason I'm asking is I don't own the books (yet ;)) and so I'm wondering how much, if anything, the books actually have. You're right, Five Nations might have a description on the historical event of Breland or Aundair meeting the druids, but I don't know if it does or doesn't ;) Which is why I'm asking. For example Sharn might have some information on the history of the city and Breland. Or it might not. It might be entirely devoted to modern Sharn. Forge of War COULD have some information about Khorvaire before the Last War, or it might not. |
| #5rekkoJul 31, 2008 8:35:43 | Oh, I see what you want now. Well, I don't own everybook either. I suggest you make a trip to your local gaming store. I'm quite sure the books are accessible and you can look quickly through the table of content, the introduction chapter and a few pages that catches your interest before buying them. Maybe your library has the books for rent. The product page also has excerpts and a description of the book. But what are you looking for? History of Khorvaire is quite large. Are you aiming for a time period or a group in special? Rekko |

Although I'll check out the excerpts. But what are you looking for? History of Khorvaire is quite large. Are you aiming for a time period or a group in special? Not really, I'm just interested in which of the books have information on the history of Khorvaire. I'm not interested in what that history is, just if a book has some. |
| #7AmarilJul 31, 2008 9:11:29 | Not really, I'm just interested in which of the books have information on the history of Khorvaire. I'm not interested in what that history is, just if a book has some. Start with Player's Guide to Eberron. From there, pick a topic of interest and buy the appropriate book. They all have extensive history in them. The only one that will not have much history is Explorer's Handbook. Other than that, you're pretty sure to get a good amount of history any book you buy. |
| #8JohnLynchJul 31, 2008 9:14:32 | Having looked at the excerpts from what I can see the following books do have history on Khorvaire: * Five Nations (ranging from before Galifar to the Last War) * Forge of War (the Last War) * City of Stormreach (the Last War) * Eberron Campaign Setting * Player's Handbook to Eberron While these books don't: * Sharn: City of Towers * Dragonmarked * Explorer's Handbook * Dragons of Eberron * Secrets of Xen'drik * Faiths of Eberron * Secrets of Sarlona If I've left off anything from the books that do have information on the history of Khorvaire or if I've incorrectly said it had no history, please let me know ![]() [EDIT]: Or maybe not. D'oh! Start with Player's Guide to Eberron. From there, pick a topic of interest and buy the appropriate book. They all have extensive history in them. The only one that will not have much history is Explorer's Handbook. Other than that, you're pretty sure to get a good amount of history any book you buy. [EDIT 2009]: Interesting books for a 4th ed game include: * City of Stormreach * Dragons of Eberron * |
| #9AmarilJul 31, 2008 9:23:42 | [EDIT]: Or maybe not. D'oh! Well, to be fair, the OP's question is a bit vague. History of Khorvaire and history in Khorvaire are two different things that are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Faiths of Eberron has history not of Khorvaire but history that does take place in Khorvaire. Dragonmarked might have more history that does affect Khorvaire politically and culturally, but it is specific to the role the Dragonmarked houses have played. Dragons of Eberron touches on the history of the world as a whole, but also touches on the outlook of dragons as the Dragonmarked races in Khorvaire have evolved. Secrets of Sarlona barely touches on Khorvaire's history at all with the exception of human migration from Sarlona to Khorvaire. The point is, rather than wondering about Khorvaire's history, focus on the history of the topic of choice instead. |
| #10ieattrollsforbreakfastJul 31, 2008 12:29:14 | For what it's worth, you can add Sharn: City of Towers to the 'has Khorvarian history' list. It's not much, but there are a few pages about pre-Galifar Sharn and the War of the Mark. As others have said, thought, almost all the books have some amount of history in them. Dragonmarked has the history of the Houses in Khorvaire, Five Nations the history of the nations, Faiths the history of religion etc. The only ones that have nothing aside from the odd comment, as far as I'm aware, are Secrets of Sarlona, the Explorer's Handbook, Dragons of Eberron, Secrets of Xen'drik and City of Stormreach. In other words, the books whose topic is based away from that continent. |
| #11mystrichJul 31, 2008 15:26:17 | As trolls said, I would add S:CoT, it has quite a bit on topics involving Sharn. Though, I disagree on Faiths of Eberron. It has a few points, but mostly it's how the religion acts, thinks of other religions, etc. It's better if you're playing a cleric, and want to know what he would be thinking. |
| #12JohnLynchJul 31, 2008 19:38:44 | Thanks everyone ![]() |
| #13PJammaGodAug 02, 2008 13:15:22 | Personally I find every Eberron book has some nugget or gem of information/history that you won't find elsewhere, which is both a boon and bane when it comes to reading. If you want stuff on the history of the Aberrant Marks you'll want Sharn and Dragonmark, whereas the influence of the Blood of Vol is scattered across ECS, Forge of War and Faiths of Eberron (with other smatterings in various other books and articles). Re-iterating what Amaril already said, go for a topic and focus on it. Even if you can't find it in a book, post something up on the boards and I'm sure one of the board members will be able to point you in the right direction (gotta love group didactic knowledge). |

Hopefully, if I ever finish my D&D Compendiums (Feat Compendium, v3.5 Arms & Guide), I'll get back to my Eberron Index. I've even considered compiling information together into a single source. |

I've even considered compiling information together into a single source. Heh, been busy doing the same (there are a metric ****-ton of feats in 3e!). My "Eberron Compendium" is just a bunch of direct quotations from the official books under the appropriate topics...haven't work on it in awhile. |

Probably should compile all the relevant data into that for the whole world to access and peruse at their leisure. |

There is, and I was once trying to build a community index on it, but ultimately it was only myself and one or two others. I kept trying to garner more work from the community, but no one seemed to be interested in contributing any effort so I stopped. I just didn't have the time anymore to do it. |
| #18PJammaGodAug 06, 2008 3:54:25 | Sw33t, well I'll happily start contributing post this weekend (I'm moving so everything is on boxes right now, argh). Anything in particular you want done? |

I just want to say I wholeheartedly appreciate this wiki and have even pointed my players to it and use it myself routinely ![]() Although I wish there was a way to separate player and DM info better. it seems a shame to reveal to players that Show A certain ruler of a certain nation is a certain undead type |

| #21Arcane_GuyverAug 07, 2008 1:49:00 | Hunh. Did not know of this UIoOPEC thingie until just now. As far as adding to it goes, is this meant as more of an index (for more on this character, see p.###), or are you wanting actual info added in? If it's the latter, I'll be very eager to contribute. |
| #22PJammaGodAug 07, 2008 5:35:25 | Hmm probs is I've never really bought any of the Dragon Magazines or such (always just borrowed off a friend). But other than that, like I said, post moving this weekend methinks I'll sit down and start writing up various stuff. Letsee now, A is for Aundair :P... |

Well, the rest of the wiki is about information. The index I started is literally an index of where to find any and all information on different subject keywords. For example, Shargon's Teeth would have source and page references to every book that elaborates on it. It was my intention to start with books that had an index already (i.e. - Sharn: City of Towers, Eberron Campaign Setting, Player's Guide to Eberron, etc.) and then move to those that don't. A huge help would be to at least put in keywords in the index, so that others can quickly plug in source and page references wherever it occurs. |
