OK sorry if this is a old topic, but how much has the value of a gold coin changed in 4th ed. i am planning to run an eberron game, but the cost of items seems to have changed so much (a big example plate armour now only costs 50 gold) so until the new stuff comes out i will use my old eberron books. however i am worried that using the treasure system from the new DMG will not translate appropriate wealth to the characters to keep them balanced.
any ideas of wise public?

A quick glance shows that some things have increased while others have decreased. I'd say that happens as the usefulness has been changed. So I'd say just use 3.5e prices for things that you're converting yourself.

The sort answer is that you're going to have to decide, as the DM, how much those services are worth to your players, at least until next year sometime. This is largely going to depend on how closely you follow the treasure packages concept and what percentage of their wealth YOUR players are willing to sink into ephemerals such as travel and message services.
