Humans were the first inhabitants of Eberron?

I had an idea for a campaign where some explorers found evidence that humans were alive before the Age of Demons and even before dragons themselves. Evidence points to the facts that they were the sole inhabitants of the world and reached incredible heights of magic and technology (like Atlantis) then in the end you find out that a castastophic accident caused it all to fall apart, and the magical aftershock created the Planes as well as creatures and magic as we know it on Eberron. Not that I am ever going to use it, but it was an idea I had the other day.

Well, this seriously steals the thunder from the dragons, but it's something I've occasionally pondered. One thing you could consider is perhaps the role of illumians and underfolk in such a setting history. Illumians in particular pretty much fit your description, especially with the idea of planar habitats.

Aye that's the whole point. It is "the Great Secret" the dragons covet over all others. Their birth may be the cause of a human accident. That is why humans frighten dragons so much and why the Dragonmarks are even more frightening.

An interesting take, Rauric. I like the "Draconic Prophecy" not being quite what you thought it was.
Dragonmarks... what would they be, I wonder?

Perhaps the accident created the dragons and other things such as Eberron, Sybris and Khyber. Perhaps the Marks are a way to keep the dragons in line so they don't try and take over the world. It makes them a little bit more scared of the humanoids eve though they won't admit it ever. The cool thing is not many dragons could know this secret. If it came out most would want to wipe humans off the planet because of the dangers they truely represent.
Not due to the accident but that they actually were superior beings that spawned all life on EB as we know it.

I am not really using this idea in my current game. It is just an idea I was messing with so I could possibly bring in a new power group (Illumians or some other humanlike race) that can shake things up for planet.

Perhaps the gods are from this original human civilization as powerful humans gained the secret to ultimate power. However while some had sought to use it for a source of good and peace (the Sovereign Host), evil sects sought to twist the power for their own nefarious purposes (the Dark Six). Realising that there would be no way to stop the evil humans-turned-gods, the Sovereign Host stopped anyone else from turning into a god while they dealt with the evil ones. They created a plane (although an accident in the process created all the other planes as well) and attempted to banish the Dark Six to the furthest plane that doesn't ever intersect with the other planes. Unfortunately the Dark Six managed to force the Sovereign Host to join them in this plane, causing the gods to forever be beyond all other planes. The knowledge and worship of these gods is the attempts of the banished gods in trying to regain entrance to the planes.

Dragons could be from another plane (perhaps the same plane as eladrin, which means the humans did still create dragons) and they journeyed to Eberron because they knew it was the original plane.

Dragonmarks could be a manifestation of the gods, which would mean the prison holding all of the gods could be weakening (or it could simply be a regular and stable flux that won't ever become strong enough to allow any of the gods freedom).

I like this idea quite a bit

What of that rumored Lost God? The Silver Flame?

Tied to the chaos and dreams beings?

Oooh, the Silver Flame could be a remnant of the old humans. Perhaps the Couatls remained loyal to the humans?
