| #1knutforkbeardSep 03, 2009 17:22:08 | The thread on Lady Vol's phylactery got me thinking about casting her as the "good guy" in my new campaign: Heroic Tier focus: defeat the Aurum in Karrnath who are trying to spread an insidious disease across the entire country specifically because they will be selling the only antidote. BUT turns out that Kaius I is actually behind it all because he's been setting up a number of external threats which he can very visibly be seen to defeat in order to prop up his regime. Paragon Tier focus: Depose Kaius I and install the real Kauis III in his place because they learn of Kaius I's impostor-hood and recent sponsorship of attacks on the kingdom such as that of the Aurum. BUT turns out that Kaius I seems to only be a pawn in Lady Vol's game to, finally, bring her dead Mark of Death to life so that she can become the Queen of Death. Epic Tier focus: Help Lady Vol achieve her true goal...death...by handing her phylactery to her and letting her destroy it in a way which brings her true peace and which permanently removes her Mark from Eberron and all planes forever. BUT they've been thinking they've been chasing her phylactery all this time to prevent her from her goals....turns out they are the key helpers. The true bad guys are a group of dragons who want to gain her phylactery but use it to somehow take control of her Mark and then use it to raise Khyber himself from the defeat he suffered at the hands of Siberys and Eberron. |

Consdiering what the Dragons of Argonessen did the last time she was discovered, I'd say this is just as legtimate a reason as wanting to save her own skin. Even if the PCs end up turning on Vol, they shouldn't want the Dragons getting involved or else they'll probably see a not-so-insignificant chunk of Khorvaire dissapear along with her. |

My players once got it into their heads that all they had to do to defeat a rakshasa plot was leak its existance to a Chamber agent. They thought the dragon's tendancy to conceal themselves on Khorvaire was for the benefit of humanity! A small city was wiped off the face of the world because the PCs didn't want to fight a CR 8 rakshasa. |
