I will be running my first time Eberron Campaign with first time Eberron players.

Been playing for 3 years but this is my first time DMing a campaign
(done the odd adventure and so on) luckily roleplaying, story, culture, politics, identity and mechanics have become second nature to me thanks to learning of some great Dm's in my time.

So my question ! should i purchase some of the 3ed Eberron books for more history and background that i may not come across in the new books,

iv seen on some threads relating to the players guide in general that there is not enough fluff for fist timers that it leave us with more questions than answers and that some parts read like we already knew that when it was evident that we didn't.

Will there be similar cases with the campaign guide to for the DM?

Im a sucker for detail and history of any setting so if there any books from 3ed that me and my players could do with using for that extra insight into Eberron i would be very grateful

( p.s i suck at posting and getting to the point so sorry for dragging it on)

o forgot to mention we have none of the books yet as the campaign guide is not yet out in the uk

The two fourth edition books contain plenty of information for first timers. I would recommend starting there. Once you have interest in a specific location you then will be able to decide if you need more info on it. That is when you would be able to decide on purchasing a 3.5 book (like Secerets of Xen'drik or Sharn: City of Towers).

thanks for the advice Talae sounds like the right course of action to take

but how about The 3.5ed Eberron campaign setting and the Dragonmarked source book as Essential fluff to go hand in hand with the new books guys ?

ECS and ECG/EPG seems as though it might be a bit redundant. Dragonmarked, Five Nations, Forge of War, Sharn, Player's Guide to Eberron and the various Secrets of ____ can be handy depending of what you are running.

Eh... the new ECG has everything the old ECS and more. I wouldn't spend much money at all on the 3.5 guide, unless you're trying to complete your collection. Dragonmarked could be good as well, but the ECG does a pretty good job of going over each house, and their place in the world.

Eh, I think it depends on where you see the campaign going. May be worthwhile to wait until the campaign is rolling to determine what you might need.

EPG is meant to leave a lot of questions, it's meant for the players and a lot of the questions it brings up are supposed to be answered either because your character in particular has more than common knowledge on a subject or it's supposed to be big secrets revealed through adventures.

You don't really want loads of detail on the silver flame in the EPG if only 1 player is part of that faith.

I'm a newcomer to Eberron myself (similar situation to you in fact, been playing a few years and this is my first time giving the DMs chair a proper go), I've only scratched the surface of the ECG and I'm finding a lot of my questions I had from the EPG are already answered.

I find that the EPG has just enough fluff to get a player intrigued, and the DM can then give out some information from the ECG at his discretion if a player is wanting to make a character that would have a bit more knowledge on a particular subject. For example, one of my players currently has a Dwarf rogue who he wants to be part of House Kundarak (we've very badly retconned Eberron into the current game as we started before the EPG came out and I had little knowledge of the details of Eberron, now we've finished KotS I'll implement it a lot better) so I'd give him a bit more information on Kundarak and a bit more on houses in general, since it would be probable he'd be a bit more knowledable of the twelve houses as a whole.

As a DM the EPG didn't have anywhere near enough and the month wait for the ECG was quite agonising but now I have both I'm very happy. Loving the ECG, I've had a quick flick through and have started a slow thourough read through and I think it's fantastic.

But I think, and the writers agree with me, there's a sidebar about it in the ECG, more fluff can never hurt and if you want a bit more information about something in particular then the 3.5 books are a great place to go to. What I'm going to do is now we've finished our introductory adventure, is to discuss with my players the options for adventures they have, and then if they want to go in one direction I might take a look at the relevant 3.5 books. No point buying Secrets of Xen'drik if your ground doesn't go there :p

yes maybe it simply that way with the EPG fluff to wet the players appetites.

That great to hear about your questions being answered from the EPG to the ECG i pretty much knew it would be but being a little impatient and a newcomer to Eberron i thought i would ask

should of just waited till i had the books in my hand before posting this thread lol :/ but o well

and as you said in the last part of your thread and as Jhanzur said before you best to wait to see where things go before purchasing a source book for a particular area or region if my party never ends up going there in the end.

However the one source book that will be arriving with EPG and ECG is the dragonmarked book because the houses may become a focus point some time in my campaign.

but thanks for the advice people
