'Iconic' Elven Warrior

May 22, 2008 11:59:53 I have a Player who's a real Tolkien nut, and has absolutely no Eberron experience whatsoever. He said he's looking for something in line with the classic image of the Elven warrior. He mentioned Spellfire (apparently he has a Faerun background) and skill at arms and bow.
I'm trying to find the right combination of race (culture)/class for him. Something relatively simple, as he's got dyslexia and I don't want to burden him unnecessarily.
I originally considered Duskblade...but dunno if that would reflect the 'spellfire' in a way he'd like.
In some ways, some kind of Soulknife/soulbow might almost fit, but I'd prefer to keep it arcane.

I'm wide open for ideas!

May 22, 2008 12:04:15 For a more classic Elven culture, take a look at the Eldeen Reaches. The nation doesn't have a large elven population (it's still human dominated IIRC), but the Eldeen druidic culture seems to map more closely to the traditional elven image than the Valenar or the Aereni.

May 23, 2008 1:18:36 Speaking from experience, Duskblade is exactly the right class for the "OMG, teh Elves is SO KEWL" feel of a Tolkien elf. (No offense meant, I love Tolkien and all, but... I think we all know that he had a "favorite" race. )

As for placing him into an Eberron culture, I would write him up as an Aerenal Elf on a quest of his own that to him to Khorvaire, and then work him in as an integral part of the other PCs' plotline.

Yeah, Hobbits. They liked the same foods, mushrooms, were into geneology, pastoral living, pipeweed, and comfortable lifestlyes. Exactly as Tolkien described his ideal from childhood.
Just because the elves are the most powerful doesnt make them his favorite...

Duskblade is still the class you need for a Tolkien elf, hands down. ;)

Having studied Tolkien as an academic matter, I disagree. Hobbits were the race he most identified with, true. But it was the Elves with whom he entrusted grace and beauty and all of what we would consider the "virtues" of humanity.

Duskblade sounded perfect the second I read it, I whole heartedly agree. I can't think of another class, I know others that would fit the Tolkien ideal better but nothing that fits flavour and dynamic-wise.

Elves were also the master crafters and gods among men, as it were. IIRC in the Silmarilian, I know I misspelled, they fought everyone including elves and were demigods in nearly all respects.
