Page 189 of the ECS talks about elemental-powered land carts, and I've seen these jokingly refered to as Mad Max-ish on this forum. To be quite honest, that was the thing that first came to mind when I read it, and I am probably going to use it like that.

What are your opinions on these elemental-powered land carts?

My impression of it is more from the adventure module Shadows of the Last War.

I don't see it as anything other than what it's description.

I don't have access to Shadows of the Last War. How are they portrayed there?

Like a cart with an elemental bound to it. It has a rough, stony outer layer and it can emerge or meld into stone for concealment and storage purposes. It also does not lose any sense of direction while traveling.

I see it more as a horseless cart or carriage, but not like a car.

That's interesting. I think I like that more than the 'car' I had in mind.

Thanks!

Here's a tip that I picked up many years ago. Take something the players' will recognize, describe in terms of it's appearance without ever mentioning what it is in modern terms and you'll have them wrapped around your finger and they'll be proud that their characters have an elemental cart that looks like a Model A ford truck from around 1930. Why use the fantastic when something more mundane will work? This way to the great egress, ennit?

Eh, I actually don't want it to look like something modern, and I don't think it's an issue of mundane versus fantastic. It's more a preference of a medieval carriage versus a Ford truck.

Have you ever seen a ford truck from 70- 90 years ago? They pretty much are medieval wagons.

Yes, I have, and no they aren't, at least not in my mind. I see it more like this:

Nope. MoE has an Earth Sled and a Tumbler.

It all depends on how you describe it. A round bump on the front made completely of moving stone is now the bound elemental rather than the hood of the car. The whole thing is made of wood of amazing quality, instead of metal. The commander of the elemental sits in the front (whether it has a wheel like in an airship or he just touches the elemental is up to you) and the back is a large open space for passengers or cargo.

Dude, earth sled = elemental bound land cart. It's the exact same thing, minus the meld with stone ability that the SotLW one had, something tells me that was unique to Falian's (sp?) cart anyhow...

Exactly. Does this sound like a horseless wagon or a Ford Model T Truck?

A wooden wagon is here with a wooden covering which aided by the leather flaps on the sides can help keep the driver dry from rain. A wooden bench rises in front of the wagon seat where a series of runes have been etched into the top of the bench on the right-hand side. The driver places his hand on these runes when suddenly a large slab of stone emerges from the front of the bench. Once the stone stops growing, the wagon begins to rumble forward.

No, they aren't. In fact, p. 33 of the Explorer's Handbook describes the land cart's appearance.

The elemental land cart, a Huge covered wagon with a forward bench and four wheels, holds a sizable amount of cargo or up to eight passengers. The cart’s bound elemental resides in a Khyber dragonshard housed in a compartment at the front of the wagon. The best elemental for powering a land cart is an earth elemental, which manifests itself as veins of stone and crystal flowing along the vehicle’s arcane matrix.

There is no picture of an elemental land cart.

For clarification, the earth sled is described completely differently in Magic of Eberron, p. 120.
An earth sled looks like a small barge, approximately 30 feet long and 15 feet wide at its center. A short railing surrounds the open front of the vessel, and a small enclosure in the back provides some shelter from the elements. A podium at the fore of the craft sports two handles, which the driver uses to communicate with the elemental bound into the vessel.

Though an earth sled can carry up to twenty Medium creatures, most are outfitted to carry eight to ten creatures, with the rest of the space devoted to cargo. It has a total capacity of 5,600 pounds including passengers and cargo.

For the record, Hellcow has said that when he originally wrote Shadows of the Last War, Falian had a small self-powered lightning rail cart rather than an elemental-bound land cart. It may be that the land cart was a rough draft version of the earthsled, before someone realized that there was no need for an earth elemental-bound vehicle to have wheels, thanks to earthglide.
