I had a half-formed thought that rituals could be made permanent with E Shards at an extra cost, but also casting time and ritual power/area could be increased at some cost of shards or something. I dunno. I really only thought of it because I had a REALLY DRAMATIC IDEA (tm). It started of a fight over a gradually collapsing floor, with a pool of lava hundreds of feet below. As the fighter slays the BBEG, or knocks him over, he gets grabbed and pulled over as well..... And the wizard throws himself over the side, dives as fast as he can, gets to the fighter, tells him to grab on, and produces an Eberron shard in each hand as he begins to incant a ritual, finishing (of course) just before they're about to take a swim in lava. Then, I was like, "well damn, I want to do that, but the ECS won't be out for a while." I'm also not generally good with rules crafting, so I put it to you guys. Brainstorm away! |

However, in general Eberron shards don't have any special abilities--they tend to be more of a standard component in creation of magical effects. So I'm assuming that with the 4E upgrade to Eberron, shards will be considered part of the standard material cost of rituals (as well as magic item creation). On the other hand, Khyber and Siberys shards have special properties. Siberys shards are used with psionics and dragonmarks. Khyber shards are involved with binding--therefore, from a thematic standpoint, you might be better off binding beings into Khyber shards to provide your permanent effects (much the way elementals are used for airships, etc), and then, if you desire, allowing shards to be bound into a person the way Quori (Siberys) shards can be. |

Keeps it simple, and lets me keep a valuable part of the Eberron economy without too much fuss. |
