So, I'm having my PC group the descendents of a Xen'drik adventuring group, when at the death of the last member leaves the party a small inheritance. Not least of all is a map to a Xen'drik ruin unexplored and unmapped. So major loot potential and lots o' danger and XP.

The Players end up with a hit on them from the local monster-based mafia, Daask. (They had to all meet in Morgrave University to receive the map, so the adventure starts in Sharn).

Players are 4th level. Still unsure how many are going to be taking part.

So far only a Karrnathi ex-priest/lieutenant of the Blood of Vol for rolled up characters.

I plan on railroading a little. Giving them the two most obvious choices to get enough money for the expedition and to investigate their attackers.

A) Hunt down the mobsters with the hit on them, with the Sharn watch,

OR

B) Join up with the Halfling mobsters from the Boromar Clan who are competing with Daask.

Either way, they help with a raid against a Daask "Dragon's Blood" drug lab/warehouse. Lots of money and enough favour to get false papers if they are working for the Boromars. And its a big enough operation the Sharn Watch will be glad to help them out afterwards. Also allows me to throw a few extra monsters as the players will have a few cannon fodder NPCs with them.

Once they have their money and papers they will head off for Stormreach, probably run into some Sauhagin in Shargon's Teeth for an encounter or two...but then what??

So yeah, I plan on having the Blood of Vol get involved at one point but I need ideas for a BBEG imprisoned in the ruins they are looking for plus some adventure ideas once they ARE in Stormreach.

So yeah, just looking for ideas. :D

The The Bloodghost Syndicate article (Dragon #366) have some interesting monsters (4E), syndicate member backgrounds - maybe you can insert some of them into Daask.

For the BBEG trapped in the ruins have the ruins be the first layer of the entry to the trapped necromancers that inspired the Blood of Vol's city (I can't remember their name right now). Gets your BoV character involved and you can also make it a reasonably low level undead and have the possibilty of exploring the ruins in more depth at later level.

Well, didn't the BoV get their magic from their ancestors, the Areneal Elves pre-Giant Rebellion? So that makes perfect sense actually seeing as how that all took place in Xen'drik...hmmmm.

I was also trying to figure out a solid reason for Daask to try to have them assassinated. I think I'm going to go with Sora Teraza, the prophetic hag that rules Droaam, having had a portent of doom involving the group and sends word to their criminal presence in Sharn (Daask) to have them put down in order to avert the disaster. Of course she doesn't give Daask details, just that they must die so Daask just sends a Troll Assassin to do the job which interrupts their little meeting. One Troll shouldn't be too hard for 3-4 Fourth level players with the help of an NPC or two.

But rather then having the BBEG a member of BoV or such and such, perhaps just a powerful being who knows the original source of necromantic power? Something the BoV would definitely want their hands on.

Which of course makes perfect sense for the Cleric to get involved as he has been recruited by Moranna ir'Wynarn (not in person mind you) to hunt down spies operating for the Order of the Emerald Claw in other countries, which is why he left the Karrnathi Military after 15 years. (She convinced him to leave by showing him how the BoV was involved in the death of his wife, hence ex-priest.)Of course as soon as he left, the BoV took all his money and property (politically) and is now looking to kill him.

A map to an unmapped ruin or a map of an unmapped ruin?

Could the Daask be looking for the map or looking to eliminate the original? I know it's a bit cliche, but give your bad guys a copy that they managed to pick up somewhere along the line before the PCs got a copy. Heck, you could even have them give it to them when they take the map to someone to translate. Suddenly the PCs are dodging assassins while racing to beat the bad guys to the ruin.

Unmapped as in no one else has a record of it. Just the map that their forefathers made.

Hmmm, well I didn't want to rush them to the ruins too fast. Being level 4, I wanted to throw quite a few encounters at them to get them tough enough first. More likely, I'll have them hire a guide into the jungle once in Stormreach, that has connections to Daask. (Meanwhile, their patrons from Morgrave unwittingly tip off the Blood of Vol into the whereabouts of said ruin or at least enough information that they can track the players. Dala Arand (spy for the Order of the Emerald Claw) is poking around Morgrave enough to find out some information for the Emerald Claw to be a bother.
