| #1ScrinoverlordOct 27, 2008 0:05:25 | Is it? With the Eberron 4E official CG coming out in June 2009, I'm beginning to wonder if my current materiel for Eberron settings are worth it or not since they're all 3.5. I currently have: -Five Nations -Forge of War -Secrets of Sarlona -Secrets of Xen'drik -Player's Guide to Eberron I plan on getting Dragons of Eberron and City of Stormreach in a few days, but like I said, I'm worried that as soon as the CG comes out, all the materiel I have will be rendered obsolete and down they go to good will or something. I haven't really run into too many problems with my current 4E Eberron campaigns (dragonmarks and psionics are easy, considering not a lot of people in the groups I play with don't want to play with either, so I only include dragonmarks and psionics with NPCs and monsters), but this just recently clicked into my mind. I mean, I personally see a reason to keep all the 3.5 Eberron suppluments even when the CG comes out in June. After all, it's not going to explain every single continent as in-depth as the Supplements do...will it? |
| #2skrap-sanOct 27, 2008 1:40:39 | I plan on getting Dragons of Eberron and City of Stormreach in a few days, but like I said, I'm worried that as soon as the CG comes out, all the materiel I have will be rendered obsolete and down they go to good will or something. There is said to be released a conversion note for those very two books from 3.5 too 4th edition. I have yet to see it, but it says on the back of them that its going to be released. Just wanted to point that out. Hopefully to make you feel better about buying them. I mean, I personally see a reason to keep all the 3.5 Eberron suppluments even when the CG comes out in June. After all, it's not going to explain every single continent as in-depth as the Supplements do...will it? And here is also my biggest argument for keeping the books. Ok so most of the crunch (stats feats etc) isn't going to make it. But a few things actually might, such as the more mundane itims that only grant you +bonuses of 1 or two to single skills. Heavens know why you may need them but you might. And then there is no change in the timeline so all the fluff (history etc) stays the same, ergo its no need for conversion. |
| #3AmarilOct 27, 2008 22:10:38 | Keith has stated on numerous occasions that the fluff from the 3.5 supplements will still be useful, so focus on books that have a lot of fluff. Stay away from Magic of Eberron as it is mostly crunch. The most useful of the books of those you don't have would be Dragonmarked, Faiths of Eberron, Sharn: City of Towers. Explorer's Handbook might be of some use. |
| #4Montonius1Oct 29, 2008 18:39:27 | I think all of the 3.5 sourcebooks will remain useful, if only as examples of certain concepts within the Eberron campaign setting of things you could convert to 4E rules. The sourcebooks provide ideas for things through the use of statistics, say the silver dragon Zenobaal from Dragons of Eberron whose powers as described could pretty easily be added by any creative DM to the 4E stat block of an ancient silver dragon. The Xen'drik, Sarlona and Stormreach sourcebooks are particularly useful for this, and the Forge of War just can't be beat for information about the Last War that will remain useful regardless of what edition you use, especially since 4E Eberron will not have its timeline advanced. Finally, one of the reasons I created the Grand History of Eberron was an understanding that with the new edition of the game, and the stated strategy of releasing only two sourcebooks for each campaign world, much of the crucial lore, particularly historical information, would be lost as the 3.5 Edition books all go out of print. As such, while the Grand History certainly cannot replace the 3.5 sourcebooks, especially since it has no game mechanical or NPC information it can provide a valuable resource for new Eberron players or old players who want to see the connection between all the various pieces of lore that most likely will not be reprinted. | #6skyodinOct 30, 2008 22:24:31 | For some reason, I never purchased Dragons of Eberron, Secrets of Sarlona, or Secrets of Xendrick. Are those three books more fluff heavy or crunch heavy? Are they worth getting at this point? |

| #8starkiller_Oct 30, 2008 22:53:34 | Well you should be able to pick up the books used for very little money so why not? |
| #9AmarilOct 31, 2008 12:10:51 | Well you should be able to pick up the books used for very little money so why not? You can pick them up new for very little money. Check Amazon. |
| #10missekatOct 31, 2008 13:12:42 | For your own sake, and if you choose to buy only ONE more book: Buy Dragons of Eberron. That book has some amazing fluff!! I actually read it from start to end, and my mind was aflame with ideas the whole way through. (And I never read setting books that way, never ever!). I van't recommend it enough. Buy it. |
| #11superdeadsmurfNov 01, 2008 9:08:03 | Make sure you get Sharn City of Towers. May actually be better than the campaign setting. Very little rules text. Also good fluffy books are Faiths of Eberron, City of Stormreach and Dragonmarked. All have lots of Fluff that will be whittled out with the new edition. |
| #12ScrinoverlordNov 02, 2008 16:15:37 | Well then, should I continue to keep the Eberron Campaign Setting? |
| #13Montonius1Nov 02, 2008 16:51:19 | You definitely should keep the ECS. If the new Forgotten Realms books for 4E are any guide, tremendous amounts of information will be lost. Those books contained a fraction of the information contained in the 3.5 Edition FR Campaign Setting (with similar page counts based on a huge increase in the use of artwork to fill space). While the new books will be needed for the game mechanical information, I'm willing to bet the lore in the ECS will remain very relevant, especially since unlike the Realms, Eberron's timeline is not advancing. |
