Please list any detective job that you've ever used in any of your games so that I, and others, may use them for inpsiration. A little background on the particulars of my game: I'm about to start a new campaign for a couple of players who have played Eberron for exactly two hours in a one-shot I ran for them, so they still have a lot to learn about the setting. I figure starting them off as occasional staff for a washed up, ex-Sharn Watch detective's small private agency is a good way to slowly introduce them to the various organizations that exist in Eberron. The agency is run by Lars Steelcrumb, a tired, balding human who has seen better days. Due to a scandal about him investigating a case involving a House Cannith heir long after the Sharn Watch had been told to forget about it, Lars was used as a scapegoat by the department and sacked. Since then, disgraced, he's eeked out a living taking odd, vaguely detective-like jobs from people without the means to pay House Medani. Unbeknownst to the players, Lars is actually a changeling, and he's actually not that old. A few years ago the Tyrants decided they wanted someone to infiltrate the Sharn Watch from the ground up, and Ril had his form permanently altered to that of a human by the doppelgangers so that his identity as a changeling would never be discovered. The years living as a human, however, have made him lose faith in the cause of the Tyrants, so even though he has begged them, they won't give him his shape-changing powers back, trapping him in this pathetic form forever. Having given up on getting his former life back, Lars is just trying to survive from day to day. None of that really matters yet, however, as the players won't find out about that for a long time. Right now I just want a couple of cool ideas for jobs/adventures to get them started on discovering Eberron via Sharn. Thanks! |

The girl has found out that her sister dropped out of school, and those she knew at the university suspected she had become addicted to Dream Lily. Anyway the girl can't find her sister, is extremely worried, so she turns to your people to find her sister. Is she just wasting her life in a Lily parlor drugged out of her mind. Has she gotten involved with a rough crowd to support her habit. Is she even on Lily, there may be a far more sinister reason for her dropping out. Or it could turn out to be mundane, she got knocked up. The possibilities are endless, which is what makes life as an inquisitive tough. |

He is being robbed money almost every week on molday night, coins taken from the safe in the backroom. He wants them to catch the peoples that he believes are getting into his small shop in the Industrial district during the night. The thieves never touch his marchandises as it is harder to sell. They never leave any traces of break in but money disapears from the safe every time, this in little ammount. But he knows people uses his shop, as often objects are misplaced, the carpet has been moved and other stuff like that. He wants the robbers to be arrested and taken to justice to face trial even if they are petty theft. This isn't enought serious to be contracted to House Cannith so he turns to a smaller private detective's agency. He ask they hide in the backroom next Molday night when he will empty the safe content from any valuables.
When the detectives uncover the true identity of the robbers, they meet face to face with the jeweler's wife and a man escort from the red light district as they get in. The woman his having a good time every Molday of the week and pays the man directly from the safe, but never thought her husband noticed anything. Ambarrassed, she begs the detectives not to reveal anything in exchange for bigger payment. She is willing to double any offer that has been by her husband. Will they report to the husband or join in her secret of adultery... |

Your disputes around the matter made him want to dig deeper in this peculiar story. The next day, you are informed by the Sharn Watch that your partner was found dead. The Watch is making their investigation, interrogating you as a suspect since they have evidence of past arguments. You need to fallow the same hot trail your partner was on to bring him justice and save your name. Skill challenges with the Watch to prevent them from locking you up. Skill challenges with the Watch to make them slip information about the investigation. Skill challenges around the City to pick up and fallow the trail and discover what happenned. Encounters with the people convering the trail and hiding the criminals. Encounters with the criminals. Encounter with the Watch. The party investigated by your partner could be anyone from any organization. I like hired mercenaries who doesn't really know what he was doing or who he was working for. Then, it leaves you on another investigation. Maybe the guy was hired by some Aurum that he himself is manipulated by some fiend or quori. The mercenary was after something, an artifact of some sort, you also need to get it before the opposing party. In this manner, the PCs could start a campaign from avenging their fallen comrade and end in epic battle against the Lords of Dust who want to awaken a Rajah in the Becoming God's body built in the Mournlands, or it could end in a 5 on 1 "duel" versus a Dragon Champion, and if you win, they will restore Cyre.

He often returns late with the smell of alcohol on his breath, which he explains by saying he had a few at the bar with some fellow guild members after the meeting. This has been going on for years. Lately however, the jeweler's wife has learned that the Merchant Guild only meets the third Molday each month. She would like to know where else her husband goes, what he does, and with whom. She offers to pay the detectives up front with a fine gold ring fashioned at the shop. Option 1: The jeweler is having an affair. It might be a kalashtar mistress, changeling prostitutes, or his own sister-in-law. A rather unworthy mission unless something complicates it, like the mystery lady being important or powerful. Perhaps a married member of the nobility who could cause the detectives trouble, or a Arcanix graduate who will seek revenge for ruining her reputation. Option 2: The jeweler is leading or participating in a cult. It might be related to the Blood of Vol, the Path of Light, or any of the less common faiths. Or it might involve a Radiant Idol, a cult of the Dragon Below, or anything else you want the detectives to discover. Revealing the truth to the client places her in danger. Exposing the cult will mark the detectives for more trouble than they need. Option 3: As above, but the jeweler is involved in a sedition group who wants to overthrow the government. Option 4: The "wife" is not as she seems. She is a changeling. The guild does meet every Molday, the jeweler isn't up to anything, and his real wife trusts him completely. When the detectives follow the "jeweler" from the shop the following Molday it is actually the changeling (who moments ago was browsing in another guise). He leads the detectives on a wild ride down into the the deepest parts of the city, suggesting a much more sinister goal for the jeweler. Why? Because the ring the detectives were paid with was stolen from a very rich individual and dragonmarked agents have been watching the drop point for days... |
