Kaius in Eberron 4e *Spoilers*

So Kaius is a vampire. In 3.5 this was pretty hard to hide, as a vampire they died in two rounds when exposed to sunlight. So, enter the 4e vampire lord - pretty much what Kaius would be, and low and behold they can walk around in the sunlight. Though, if WotC makes him really shiny when he's outside, there will be hell to pay.

Is anyone else excited about this change?

May 14, 2009 9:57:32 I am hoping that this time around (4e) they do a better job with the "secret" info. PGtE was a wonderful supplement, but had much information in it that the PCs shouldn't know for plot purposes, like the above mentioned for instance.

Oh god. This. This times one hundred. If there is a SPECK of glitter on anything vampiric in my DnD, I am flying to Seattle with an atom bomb strapped to my chest.

I'm not a fan of them doing this, I guess I'm stuck on the old ways.

However, that said, never once in my D&D career have any of my characters, or players when I DMed, ever killed a vampire with sunlight. That said, all it really provided was a bit of comfort when you had to rest or run, and the sun came up.

So really this is going back to the classics.

Does it matter? Either way, we're talking about things that don't exist, so there's no 'correct' way for them to be. Your imaginary friend does what you want it to do.

May 19, 2009 10:48:16 I've always just played it that Kaius's vampirism was a popular rumor, started as propoganda during the war by anti-Karrnathi factions ("He feasts on the innocent! Fight him!") and embraced by certain pro-Karrnathi factions ("Hells yeah he's a vampire! Fear us!"). In truth, Kaius is actually a clone. Or a changeling. Or a rakshasa. Or an Inspired-imprinted brain replicant. Or a vampire. The only way for the party to know is to seek him out-- and they haven't had a reason to, yet.

I disagree with this. There are many ways to avoid sunlight if you happen to be a powerful warlord-king. Kaius simply isn't the sort of king seen taking walks in the garden. He spends much of his time deep in his fortress-castle, which is designed for defense, not letting the warm afternoon sunlight in. Karrnath is something of a gloomy land, often overcast anyway. Avoiding sunlight is easy if half your staff is in on it, and no one has the authority to question you anyway.

Dispelling the rumors is as easy as sending a changeling out onto the balcony to read some edicts and speeches once in a while.

It was just really annoying trying to come up with roundabout reasons to have a vampire always appearing at night, inside, in the shade, etc. I know I and many of my DMs often forgot (or just plain ignored) this fact whenever we/they were trying to introduce NPCs that were secretly vampires.
