I, of course, talk about accents and nation resemblances. This is just an idea, pretty sure it's not canon.

Breland

-English accents
-similar to England (YES, England, not the United Kingdom as a whole)

Aundair
-French accents
-similar to France (supposedly "arrogant" [Even though I am not arrogant, at least to the nice American tourists here :P], good cheese, wine, agricultural.

Karrnath
-Russian accents
-similar to Russia (not saying Russia is necassarily like this, but Karrnath is all about war, it's cold up there, they make awsome beverages)

Cyre
-You know, it's pretty hard for the Cyrans (I don't know how to pronounce Cyre. Is it "Kree" or "Sai-ree" or "Sree"? I'm confused :[). Irish, maybe? Italian?

Sarlona
-think of it as America. Not saying they have American accents, but on my tour in the US I noticed that not every American talks with a New York accent. Since Riedra's provinces still have old echoes of kingdoms (it even says in SOS that accents provide hints to national origin), it probably has multile accents. The dominant, "Riedran" one? Eh, I dunno. Syrkran, Tashana Tundra, Adar? Meh.

I suppose the dwarves would, of course, have stereotypical Scottish accents, the elves would be...er...beats me. Every other "nation" in Khorvaire would have accents depending on the nation. The Shadow Marches would probably have Brelish accents, same with Droaam; Eldeen Reaches humans would have Aundarian accents, and so on and so forth.

Any input? Comments? Suggestions? French-bashing? (There's bound to be someone here that despises my accent :O)

I've been endeavoring to get away from Scottish Dwarves - Mror natives in my game have a kind of thick Russian/Turkish combo.

Breland is a melting pot of accents - Sharn in particular has a different one depending on which ward you're in, but generally it's variations on British Isles (I've used Cockney, Cornish, Irish, Somerset, Welsh, and RP so far).

Cyre I've tended to do as eastern American, with variants depending on where in the country (nearer to Karrnath is more of a Chicago, nearer to Breland is more of a New England, but the 'high Cyran' accent is a Virginia).

Thrane is more German/Slavic, Aundair is English/French, both with Italian overtones.

I've given the Sulatar Drow an accent similar to a cross between Punjabi and Swahili. It can be a little difficult to understand at times.

Sarlona I've actually invented accents for. It sounds vaguely Arabic, without the gutteral qualities.

The only nation that I've actually used an unblended real-world accent for is Karrnath, which is pure eastern Ukrainian.

Cyre is pronounced like "Seer"

Actually, by Cyrans it's pronounced "Seer-EE", though other regions pronounce it seer, sire, kire, keer, and everything in between.

I couldn't provide a link, but I asked Hellcow this back when the "Ask Keith Baker" threads were still up - suffice to say it was quite a while ago.

Well, would anyone else like to share their perceived accents of Eberron's nations/cultures?

I am American, from upstate New York - we don't talk like people from "the City". My parents had slight NYC accents, and I can do accents pretty well in general.

To me, Breland is America. More of a frontier kind of feel, relatively young, sparsely populated (overall), but rapidly growing country. A recently awakened sleeping giant. I tend to use a neutral (to my ear) accent for Breland, and Sharnites will usually get more of an urban NYC, Boston or Philly accent. Mob figures get the standard NYC/Jersey Italian accent, natch. Upper classes get more of an upper-class/snobbish American accent rather than British. Rural upper-class will generally get a genteel southern accent, and the lower classes will get rural New England or more rough redneck accents as the situation warrants.

Cyre I pronounce sire and its inhabitants are siren, though I am trying to retrain myself to say seer and seeren - I don't disagree with Keith on much, but seer-ee just sounds gratuitously weird - kind of like a girl named Cindy spelling her name SyndEe. Cyre and its refugees gets the received pronounciation British accent - it just sounds classier to me and I hold Cyre up in my games as an ideal (their tragic flaw being naivete and a lack of political pragmatism). Other interesting British accents I reserve for important NPC's -they don't have a particular region.

Karrnath I use Southern German accent for the western, more militaristic areas, and Eastern European (think Transylvania) for the cold, harsh Eastern areas that still sympathize with the Emerald Claw.

Dwarves I do with Scandinavian accents.

Talenta halflings I do in thick Russian. Gives the Boromar clan in Sharn a "Russian Mob" feel to them. BTW, I respell this as B'romaar - I mean, Boromar? Talk about a phoned-in name... Tolkien much?

Aundair I also do in lightly-accented French - I also like the French people, and what's wrong with a little arrogance? I like to think of Aurala's court as being very Sun King, with Elizabethan overtones (maybe more the other way around).

I do the more sinister Thranes in an evilly-tainted light Spanish accent. I have a hard time doing Spanish or Italian accents without it lapsing into "Father Guido Sarducci" comical, so I don't go there very often.

Valenar Elves are Arabic with English overtones - I think of Kingdom of Heaven. Aerenal Elves speak very little, and when they do it is in echoing whispers.

I try to do the Inspired in a very high, light, soothing voice, without much in the way of accent. I haven't taken my group to Sarlona yet, but I don't have much mastery of middle-Asian accents, otherwise that is what I would probably shoot for in Adar. Maybe a bit of research.

Ogres and Hill Giants tend to get Cockney, as well as I can manage it. For Gnolls I do my best to sound like a hyena, and I just butcher the grammar and pronounciation when I do goblins.

I do the Shadow Marchers/Orcs in a Cantonese accent.

Try something like Sendhil Ramamurthy's faux 'Oxford Indian' - it's ethnic without being awkward.
