Last War Mercenaries and Dwarven Olympics

May 25, 2008 15:03:28 I've been kicking around an idea for a mercenaries campaign. I'm planning on having them start as the FNGs of the Red Gauntlet. Their squad will was going to be assigned to the Mror Holds to act as security for, essentially, the Dwarven Olympics.

Now, I figure that crowd control could get kind of boring, so I decided that I want some intrigue. My first thought is that someone drugs/poisons/etc one of the athletes. So, does anyone have any ideas about where to bring it from there?

May 25, 2008 15:14:20 You could alway steal a bit from real life, like back a few olympics ago when someone left an unattended backpack at the venue and it threw everyone into a panic.

The intrigue in that case - something that may be useful to you, as a matter of fact - is that the FBI originally suspected the security officer who first reported the blast. The assumption was that he was unhappy with his "failed" career and planted the bomb so he could "be a hero." This was false, but it took him years to clear his name.

Why is this useful to you? Who would make a better scapegoat for a staged attack on a Dwarven town than a group of bored "heroes" trying to prove themselves to the locals? If you precede the attack with some Dwarven antipathy towards the party, the plot will work as a motivator to get the PCs to find the real attacker.

May 25, 2008 23:04:54 What about a competitor being poisoned, and another one being found with tools for poisoning (Detect Poison also reveals he has weak "poison" in his body), although he is taking some form of magical steroid (maybe Dragon's Blood if he's a Dragonmarked heir).

Pardon me if I offended you in any way. I remember the incident, but thought the two were unrelated. I didn't wish to seem callous, which is why I didn't suggest the pipe bomb incident to begin with.
