| #1sheard33Mar 02, 2011 11:12:47 | I am taking over a campaign for a DM that unfortunately had to leave the group. Synopsis of transpired events: This was a homebrew campaign that involved our group of 4 Dwarves meeting at a town inbetween our holds for a peace treaty. The two Clans were to bring their Book of Grudges and mediate a peace deal in this neutral setting. On the way, our group of dwarves that had been acting guards for the caravan carrying our Clan's Book of Grudges was raided by "mutant" Goliaths that stole our book as well as a neighboring town's Gem of Protection. Our group goes to the neutral town to give word of what happened, only to find out that the rival Clan's book was stolen as well. We go back to the area of the raid and track Goliaths, on the way we are ambushed again and we kill that group and find the rival Clan's Book of Grudges.... end campaign My DMing idea / proposal: Let me first state that I have no experience with Eberron other than skimming the 4E Players guide and Campaign setting. The rival Clan of Dwarves had some amount of Technology, their Hold had factories and they have blunderbuss's. The small town we traveled through had a "gem of protection." We ran into "mutant" Goliaths...All of these things made me think, why not put this campaign into Eberron. I adapted our Clan into Clan Mroranon, the rival Clan is located in the Irontooth Mountains, but on the Karrnath side, so they are outside of the Iron Council and the Mror Holds Clans Peace Accord. I want to use everything that the previous DM used without changing too much of the feel. I want to incorporate the Jhorash'ter Orcs, and the Aurum. I want the Aurum to have made a deal with the Jhorash'ter to steal the rival Clan's Books to stir up trouble, the Aurum have given the Orcs some of the Goliaths that they have kidnapped and used their fell magics upon. The Orcs hide in the shadows and use the Goliaths to not only get the books but also steal the small town's Gem of Protection.... These are my thoughts on how it might play out in Eberron...seems a little shaky to me though. Any thoughts out there to help me out? The main problem for me are the Goliaths and how they are mutated, I could probably leave out the Jhorash'ter, but I really like the dynamics that they play against the Mroranon Dwarves. I could leave them out though and just have had the Aurum using the Goliaths and giving them buffs / favors to mutate them... help and thoughts would be appreciated, we are running this on Friday...... |

I mean, its an awesome setting and all, but it isn't a good fit for the classic High Fantasy kind of adventure. I've heard Eberron described as, "Dungeon Punk," and I think that's a good description. Concerning the mutations, would the Daelkyr fit in your campaign? Barring that, a splinter group of House Vadalis doing the mutations? The Aurum could pay for the experiments, but why? |
| #3sheard33Mar 03, 2011 8:52:55 | Yeah, tall order, but it will work itself out. I dig the dungeon-punk of Eberron and the use of magics for everyday everything, the blunderbuss's of the rival clan are operated magically and not powder-ball of real life, and the technology and the factories that the rival clan had I thought cold be incorporated into some kind of a forge for turning out these magic weapons. I am not familiar with "Daelkyr", I assume it's something in Eberron? I will google it and see what is going on. Not too familiar with vadalis either but I will read their section and see. I thought to use the Aurum because they share the same mountain as the Mroranons and probably could use them out of the picture so they could horn in on their wealth...? Thanx for the input :-) |
| #4sheard33Mar 03, 2011 11:02:45 | Okay, the House Vadalis tip was gold! They fool around with nature, create the Magebred and Empress Donata, who wants power and needs more stock. The "mutated" goliaths are magebred, they are taking goliath males from the Irontooth mts, the goliath tribes there need protection so they steal the gem, magebred goliaths take grudge books in a deal with Orcs for revenge on the dwarves and in turn will supply Donata with some Orc stock for her evil brew.... We'll leave the Aurum out of it altogether and only implicate the Orcs and Magebred...hopefully they will follow the Orcs first to get their book back, going into the Mournlands would be bad for them at this level..... Than again for the tips, I hope the crew will enjoy Eberron! |
| #5OgiwanMar 03, 2011 16:23:08 | We'll leave the Aurum out of it altogether Altogether? Or just.....for now? How much do you want to run with Donata? It is quite possible that, in your Eberron, she runs some sort of international smuggling consortium or whatnot, and has a position in the Aurum. Remember, the Aurum is all over Khorvaire. As for the Daelkyr, they invaded Eberron about....what, 6,000 years ago? The Xoriat invasion was one of the things that began the decline of the Dhakaani Empire, the empire of goblins. The Daelkyr are the ones who made most of the aberations of Eberron. They are opposed by the Gatekeeper druids. Now, me personally, I have a fetish for the Lords of Dust and the Emerald Claw. You might latch onto other villianous groups. Good luck running your game. Tell us how it went, and we can provide suggestions on how to include more Eberron flavor. |
| #6sheard33Mar 03, 2011 18:19:31 | yeah, we'll leave the Aurum out for now....... I will probably try to get the emeral claw in there, I dig them too. I'll give you an update after, thanx again for the help :-) |
| #7sheard33Mar 06, 2011 21:13:21 | Well, the session went great. The players found out that the Jhorash'tar were working with the Magebred Goliaths. They ran across a band of rival dwarves and were able to defeat and imprison them. They tracked them to an Orcish outpost deep in the Ironthooth mts. They returned to their hold with their prisoners and Clan Mroranon sent a much larger band to strike at the outpost, inside it they found a letter that implicated the magebred and the Jhorash'tar in a kidnapping scheme, kidnapping male goliaths for Empress Donata's schemes, signed by a high member of the emerald claw. Toran Mroranon does not like that the group returned without their Book of Grudges. He tells them that they will have to return the Book...Ooohh can't wait to see where this leads. Thanx again Ogiwan. |
| #8OgiwanMar 07, 2011 8:32:50 | Glad to be of help. I am a massive fan of my Eberron, so I'm more than happy to help others enjoy the setting as well. We seem to have a pretty decent crowd of people on the Eberron boards, but only a small handful post regularly. I, of course, would like to change that, and get more activity (which might lead to more Dragon and Dungeon articles). |
| #9sheard33Mar 07, 2011 9:12:51 | Yeah, speaking of that..... Do you know what articles in Dungeon / Dragon are Eberron related? I could do a search...or could go through table of contents...but if you know off the top of your head, or have already searched this and the info is handy, then.... I am thinking of using their book of grudges as the mcguffin, at least for a couple more levels, then I cold open up into more, already working on some personal character specific side quests, my Eberron needs more intrigue and technology :-) |
| #10OgiwanMar 07, 2011 14:11:43 | I actually mumbled something about that in another post, and got the answer: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... Turns out its a sticky at the top of this forum. I was asking in a Lore forum thread. |
| #11JavagamerMar 24, 2011 10:45:33 | How is your Eberron thing going? I just started mine. I am running the premade Kyber Harvest, that will lead to my campaign. I am new at this as well. |
