Mythic Sovereign destiny in Eberron

Sep 23, 2008 7:54:14 The new Dragon article on epic Faerunian destinies contains a little gem called the Mythic Sovereign. For the campaign that plans to end with a PC on the throne, this is right up their alley. It requires the fighter, paladin, ranger or warlord class, though clever multiclassing could open this up to anyone. The question is, which throne to go for?

The Galifaran crown is the most obvious prize-- since the Wynarn dynasty has fractured into competing thrones, maybe it would take an outsider (the PCs) to reforge the empire.

Cyre stands out as a crown waiting for an adventurer to claim it, too. On the downside, the PCs will either have to reverse the Mourning or claim a new chunk of territory-- pretty epic challenges either way. On the upside, the jubilant refugees may rename the country just for you.

Thrane has a monarch, technically, but her power has been largely co-opted by the Church of the Silver Flame. A Mythic Sovereign, especially a CoSF paladin, might restore the throne without upsetting the faithful. (A fellow party member angling for the Demigod epic destiny might consider discussing the Speaker's role with the DM...)

The Lhazaar Principalities? Corsair paragon path (from the FRPG) + Mythic Sovereign = Pirate King. Yes, please!

The Lhesh Haruuc won himself a country, but he can't rule forever. Without a clear heir yet, this could be the chance for a goblinoid to take the reins and guide Darguun into proper nationhood. Dealing with the Heirs of Dhakaan could be a paragon or epic quest, depending on what artifacts they've managed to recover...

Speaking of non-humans, Droaam technically isn't recognized by the treaty of thronehold, which is just begging for a mythic sovereign to come in and make it a safe place to live. All the would-be-ruler has to do is defeat three epic hags (one of which is prescient), their fanatical troll army, and ravenous tribes of gnolls. (Whether you keep the mind flayer mayor of Graywall is up to you.)

A really do-it-yourself mythic sovereign might consider planting a flag in the Demon Wastes or Xen'drik. On the upside, most of the competition in those regions died out ten to twenty thousand years ago. On the downside, the competition that has survived tends to be time-lagged demon rajahs and epic giant warlocks. Still, the Gaashkala orcs and the drow tribes are handy allies to have, and will make a hell of a national militia (though maybe not a tax base).

If the PCs and the DM plan ahead a little, the mythic sovereign could rise out of one of the existing royal families-- certainly it'd be fun to have an ir'Wynarn on the adventuring company roster. The adventuring-age heirs have been shuffled around as part of the Treaty of Thronehold, so there's plenty of opportunity for enterprising young royals to meet in odd places. Just be wary of cold uncles, vengeful Cyrans, and nascent democratic movements.

Just a coda, but I'll say this about the mythic sovereign's 21st level feature, Homeland-- it will be huge fun to pick a spot on the map and say, "Yeah, that's mine."

Sep 23, 2008 10:15:01 This epic destiny looks like a nice follow-up in theme to the paragon path of the Cyre Avenger:

"This Is Not My Fate (24th level)" continues "Almost Dead (Cyran Avenger Utility 12)"
The "Homeland" power continues the "Enemy Territory" power (maybe the enemy territory becomes the new homeland).
"Sword of Kings (30th level)" continues "Shall not fall again (Cyran Avenger Attack 20)"

Sep 24, 2008 19:37:45 You know, this would be a great epic destiny for NPCs like Karrn the Conqurer and Galifar the 1st, because they were powerful beings who helped shape huge nations. Maybe this class would be good for someone who would reunite the Five Nations again! Just some food for thought.

this multiclass won't work with MC feats, as they only open you up for PPs and not EDs. (check the wording phb p207 or 208)

A good point to raise, though personally I'm disinclined to follow that particular rule.
