I have 10th level party of Dragoborns that are in Q'Barra next to an ancient city.  There are a scattering of groups trying to get into the newly discovered ruins to loot it for a variety of motives and reasons.  The group my party hates the most is the Tieflings.  Since it is an ancient tiefling city (Vor Rukith, the accessory) they are there to stop the rebirth of a tiefling nation.  So the group is tracking a tiefling spy and that spy is leading them into an amnush.

The ambush is led by a couple of tiefling folks (a controller and a lurker, plus the spy is a lurker).  They have taken control of some local lizardfolk.  a pair of soldiers and a handfull of minions.  I need to round it out with a brute.  I wouldlike to really wow up the encounter with something not humanoid.  I could go for the young dragon but yawn...

What is a cool creature that gets rare attention and fit in nicely here?

ps I avoid psionics...

First off, HEY SPQR! Long time no see! (I spend most of my time over at WorldWorksGames nowadays.)

Second, my thoughts went to Girallon or something more troll/ogre-like. A living spell could be interesting as well.

Hey Talae,

A trollish like thing that is kept in chains type of thing is just the avenue I am after.  Lune suggested a half troll/black dragon.  Still a bit prototypical for the setting...

War Troll? I forget the level of it, but its pretty badass. Even if its too high lvl, maybe its not meant to be killed and could come back after regeneration kicks in and could turn out to be organizing local orcs, goblins, etc. Against the PCs.

A Shambling Mound would be cool too. Maybe with some magic with it, like it being on fire.

If the fight is for 10th level, how about Rhesh Turakbar?  He's in the Eberron Campaign Guide (I assume you're playing 4th edition), he hits pretty hard, with a 3d8+8 weapon attack, and a Charge ability that allows him to charge for 2d6+7, then shift 2 and use his greathammer for the 3d8+8 again.

On top of this, he's an elite, and on top of THAT, he has a minor action attack.

On top of THAT, if he drops someone to zero, he regains 30 HP.

AND ON TOP OF THAT, when he finally DOES go down, he's a freaking minotaur.  Yet ANOTHER swing with his greathammer.

The only thing I would change from his base stats are increasing his attack bonuses by 2; unfortunately, he suffers from "brutes that can't hit anything" (most PCs have an AC of 28-33 at level 11, meaning a need to roll a 14-19 to hit).

As far as plot hooks... well, maybe those tieflings managed to dominate Rhesh.  Maybe they have an alliance with Droaam.  Maybe there are some gnolls that the party recently killed that he wants to avenge.  And again, it doesn't need to be THE rhesh turakbar, it could just be some Turakbar minotaur gladiator or something.

shame it couldn't have been a Yuan'ti Warlock, or perhaps a Quatle Tainted.
