Disclaimer: if any of my players are reading this, please stop now. Thanks.

Hey all. I am running a 4E Eberron campaign that's coming to a close and I need ideas for a story arc that is concerned with the Day of Mourning. Here are the relevant details:

1) At the end of the story arc, the players should find out what actually happened on the Day of Mourning.

2) The story arc will take the characters from Level 25 to Level 30 and will be the capstone on a long-running Eberron campaign. The arc should span about 20 sessions.

3) I would like to use an iconic D&D villain in the final encounter, though not one specific to Eberron. (I have already used a lot of iconic Eberron villains in my campaign and want to save some in case I run future campaigns in Eberron.) Right now I am leaning towards Demogorgon, who I was thinking could be one of the overlords from the Age of Demons.

4) I did drop hints a while back (I think while the characters were in the high paragon tier) that the Day of Mourning was triggered by the detonation of an ancient Cul'sir weapon. However, the player never really followed this plot hook and are unlikely to remember it - so I don't want to force this detail if it doesn't fit.

So, I realize this isn't a whole lot to go on, but I'm hoping that some people might have some ideas to get the brain juices flowing. Any suggestsion would definitely be appreciated.

What factions/secret societies have they tangled with?

Well, I don't necessarily know what factions the characters are involved with, as I usually give the players an opportunity to switch characters in between story arcs - most of them take it. I know they are still hashing out characters, but I should know backgrounds by next week.

The player whose character is going to be at the center of the arc is not switching characters - he has the Mourning Savior epic destiny. That character is a researcher in House Cannith who has led a fairly sheltered life, and he primarily worked in Cyre. The events of the Day of Mourning has led him to get out of the lab and start adventuring.

Following the idea that the day of Mourning was caused by an ancient giant weapon (which was originally intended to be used against the Quori/dragons of Argonnessen/slave rebellion/other giants):

There could have been other cases in the history of Eberron where it was used. The PCs may stumble upon the fact that there is another (smaller, older) Mournland zone somewhere in the world (in Xen'Drik/Everice/Frostfell/Argonnessen or maybe under the sea).

Exploring this older Mournland area (containing undead dragons/elves/giants) could be the key to finding out that the truth: it was a giant weapon and that the Cul’sir Empire possessed the knowledge to reverse it's effects.

The Cul’sir Emperor (now an ascended primordial existing somewhere in Kythri) may give them that knowledge (for a price).

Thanks, Gilo. I really like the idea of the weapon having been used elsewhere, perhaps even detonated in a small area to test the weapon. I will very likely use this idea.
