Even if you hate it, let me know.

Shards are an Eberron "item" in the term that they first used from dragon shards. These dragon shards are magical and of greater value then any normal gem. After configuring the price the magic used in making these comes close to standard price lists. I have taken off with the idea and here is my way of putting them into writing. (i.e. - someone else's idea first, I just am putting the numbers down)

Compare to DMG p222 for weapon modification prices.

What this means:

+1 weapon shard = 2k gp

+1 weapon shard AND +1 weapon mod (fire, acid, whatever) = 8k gp

So does the second shard cost 6k? No, it costs 2k and you spend 4k gp in oils and other items to imbue the item. These were extra dragon shards when I read up on it, but any gem or other item of value that can be turned to "dust" for fine oils and ointments is ok. This allows for shards to be placed into any system.

A +1 shard is 2k gp for base price.

A +2 shard is 4k gp for base price, except where it is a weapon modifier (ie- cost of oils and other stuff is taken out. Example- +1 weapon to a +2 weapon: +1 weapon is 2k gp in cost, +2 shard is 4k and together they are 6k gp in value. This leaves 2k gp in stuff for a player to gather to upgrade the weapon modifier. The same is also true for going to a +3 from a +2 and to a +4 from a +3.

A Weapon upgrade also looks at the total modifier of a weapon. You can have a lot of +1 mods to a weapon, but it will still be worth a ton of money. So this means that you can buy "Special ability (+1 value)" down at the store, but unless you can finish the spell to upgrade the weapon, the shard wont take (and with possible loss of the shard).

The full price list for just the weapon shards:

+1 shard = 2k gp

+2 shard = 4k gp

+3 shard = 8k gp

+4 shard = 16k gp

+5 shard = 32k gp

There are no +6 shards.

Final example:

I have a +2 longsword of giantbane (a total of a +3 weapon). Its full value is 18k gp. I want to upgrade it to also do fire damage (a +1 mod). I buy a fire shard for 2k gp at the local magic store. I also need to buy the correct amount of oils and gems to make it work. so:

+3 and +1 = +4 mod.

A +4 mod is equal to 32k gp.

My sword is worth 18k and the new shard is 2k in value = 20k gp

32k gp minus 20k gp equals 12k gp in fine oils and gems. (this is about 2 or 3 fine gems plus oils, a cost that I can afford.) I buy what I need, go home and use the oils and gems on the sword. After 24 hours of aligning myself to the weapon I can go out and burn up a few more giants.

The same holds true for Armor and shields. Compare to DMG p217 for armor cost.

+1 shard is 1k gp

+2 shard is 2k gp

+3 shard is 4k gp

+4 shard is 8k gp

+5 shard is 16k gp

There are no +6 shards.

The rules for upgrading any armor or shield follow the same set of rules as weapons.

The only exception to this is upgrades that have a set value (i.e. - glamered for 2,700 gp value). These carry the full cost of the upgrade and cost nothing for extra oils or gems. Where the price falls in relation to other set value and demand for item dictates the ability to buy these shards. Finding a caster that has Create Magic Arms and Armor AND Create Wondrous Item may make it hard to find the shards.

Limits:

No weapon can go over a +10 in value or a +5 for its magical modification (armor or weapon). This is a hard and fast rule until you become epic.

+1 shards are limited to 5 to one item

+2 shards are limited to 4 to one item

+3 shards are limited to 3 to one item

+4 shards are limited to 2 to one item

+5 shards are limited to 1 to one item

You make carry any number of shards but items can only be imbued with the above totals.

A shard has a hardness of 8 and 20 hp per inch. A sonic attack against a shard is treated as bypassing the hardness. the weight of a shard is approx. 0.5 lbs per inch give or take (most of this is magical weight).

A typical +1 shard has 2 inches of thickness. (40 hp)

A typical +2 shard has 3.5 inches of thickness. (70 hp)

A typical +3 shard has 5 inches of thickness. (100 hp)

A typical +4 shard has 6.5 inches of thickness. (130 hp)

A typical +5 shard has 8 inches of thickness. (160 hp)
