In FR things are explained by a god dying. For Eberron will you just switch over and pretend things have always been this way, or will you have a transition campaign, and if so what could cause magic to completely rework itself?

I will pretend things have always been that way. None of the Eberron flavour will have to change, since none of the 3E mechanics are woven into the setting's story. Ok, there might be a few things here and there, but nothing major, and certainly nothing that would require me to use plot to change.

But if you like stirring things up a world-shaking event is a pretty good idea, though.

There were never gnomes in Zilargo. Pfff.

Fortunately, my current group has no full-time casters (we get by with a bard and an artificer), and the party has only visited about 15% of the world map. When we're ready to gear up for our first 4th edition Eberron campaign, we'll be able to start with new characters in new regions and minimal retconning.

I assume this one is a joke, but at least by canon (4E) Eberron, the gnomes of Zilargo are alive and well. It's easy to use gnomes as PCs straight out of the 4E MM, and the new mechanics for gnomes are actually a solid match for Eberron.

Dealing with the central question, I actually haven't felt any need to explain the change in the magic system. If anything, the transition from Vancian magic to ritual magic is a better match for the Khorvairian society as currently depicted, and when it comes to the fact that a wizard never runs out of magic missiles, it doesn't have such a significant impact on the world that I've felt any need to explain it.

Alternate theory:

Zilargo is a myth, perpetuated by the gnome population who seeped in through the cracks in reality and assumed positions in Galifar society to serve and subvert the human population.
The whole "Zilargo" thing is a cover for their ability to spawn without physical parentage and as a source from their carried culture, which forms spontaneously in the minds of every gnome as it is needed.

Anyone who tries to enter the area marked on maps as "Zilargo" is terminated and replaced with an exact duplicate by the hidden extra-dimensional masters who dwell there.

In these respects it's much like Australia, except australians are taller.

Gnomes aren't in the 4E Player's Handbook, so early on there were people wondering if gnomes would be written out of the setting.

I don't think gnomes are a PC race in the 4th ed PHB.
Don't quote me on that.

Gnomes are not presented as a PC race in the 4th Edition PHB. However, the 4E Monster Manual provides you with all of the information you need to have a gnome PC. One of the characters in one of my 4E Eberron playtest campaigns is a gnome straight from the MM (IE, I haven't created anything special for him), and he's worked out fine.

I was just responding to elorian. I knew they were in the MM due to the gnome and teifling(sp?) video that was on the website a few weeks back.

Off-topic question: I know it is a long ways off, but will the 4th ed ECS be a rehash of the old one, or will new mysteries be revealed, and will there be a way for readers to know what just has not been put into print at that point, and what will be up to the DM to decide.

I also wonder this. As well as Tieflings and Eladrin. Are the elves of Eberron going to split as in 4e?

Elves, Drow, and Eladrins are going to be the big 3 of the elf race unless they add more in a future MM.

I will have eladrin be beings that live on Thelanis. The elves we know now were actually taken by the giants when they needed slaves. The elves adapted to living on Eberron and became a different being than the eladrin.

Is the theory on drow going to be that they were created as experiments on the "normal" elves by the giants?

Perhaps. That is why they still retain there "feyness" and elves did not. It is all a work in progress though.

I could copy out all Keith's quotes about the content of the 4ECS, dragonborn, eladrin, tieflings etc, but I've already done that, so I'll just post a link :D

I plan to have things go on as though they have always been that way. In my campaigns we too stick with the idea that the time line should not advance. That means that when a campaign ends, we start right back where the ECS starts off. Makes it easy to explain changes like this.

Thanks - I certainly didn't have time to go looking for them all again!

Regarding the Dragonborn, Eladrin, Tieflings, etc, it's not something I can discuss in more detail at this time. We have places for all of them in Eberron, and some of the ideas that people have suggested are close to the approach we've taken (others, not so much). Next month I'll check with James to see what we can do to help people make the transition. But without WotC approval, all that stuff is still covered under the NDA.

Any ideas for dragonborn?

A natural place to put them would be natives of Argonessen. Very little was ever written about exactly what was on that continent anyways. Maybe some of them migrated to the Seren islands and Q'Barra some time ago, like how humans migrated from Sarlona.

That alone would be appreciated. I am sure that, in some capacity, the transition information needed will be made available through DDI. It would make sense to do so, afterall, or they would be alienating a whole lot of players by leaving us in the dark for a year.

A natural place to put them would be natives of Argonessen.

As SkyOdin suggests, I will place the Dragonborn on Argonessen and explain the race as the result of years of breeding with the human barbarian tribes. What I have trouble with is how they would fit into a regular city environment because, for a while, in my 4e Eberron the Dragonborn, Eladrin, and Tiefling will be rather rare sites to see. Should make for some interesting role play to say the least, but I am afraid that rarity might make them less than desireable for the players too.
