| #1oidSep 26, 2008 19:59:55 | i've read alot of eberron novels and those far on one has had a valenar character in it. and the valenar don't seem to get much attention else where. so what i'm askin' is, were is the love? |
| #2HellcowSep 26, 2008 22:52:59 | As the person who wrote the Valenar material for the PGtE, the Valenar dragonshards, and the recent Valenar Expeditionary Dispatches, that love is right here, baby. However, once I'd written four expeditionary dispatches on Valenar, it was time to turn to another place that hasn't seen much love - Droaam. Thus the Mordain articles and the upcoming Graywall piece. In a weird convergence, a 4E Eberron game I'm in right now involves a gnoll ranger who wants to prove himself worthy to join the Valaes Tairn (don't see it happening, but it's entertaining enough). I'm afraid my current novel doesn't have anything to do with Valenar or Droaam, but it deals with ANOTHER of my favorite aspects of Eberron that hasn't gotten much love (less than the Valenar, actually). But hey, more will come in time! |
| #3elrodianSep 27, 2008 5:14:57 | I am waiting on the edge of my sit for that book hellcow. I just cannot wait. Back to the thread, I have to say that I have thought of that a lot and there is not a lot of books set in valenar or tons of info on them. The only valenar person in a book is in storm dragon. |
| #4Alex_Sep 27, 2008 10:38:01 | I'm afraid my current novel doesn't have anything to do with Valenar or Droaam, but it deals with ANOTHER of my favorite aspects of Eberron that hasn't gotten much love (less than the Valenar, actually). Please let it be Talenta Halflings or Orcs (Shadow Marches and/or Mror Holds)! |
| #5elrodianSep 27, 2008 11:54:38 | I think he is talking about the second book after Stone Queen |
| #6oidSep 27, 2008 15:01:45 | i know i followed the Expeditionary Dispatches nigh religiously. and must say i did not quite see Taer Valaestas like that (mind you, that's a very good thing. a bronzewood wall of thorn :clap even though i'm a usually a purist with the vaelas tairn and all, good look mr.gnoll. he'll need it.but i guess i just still have alot of questions... in your defense, i never stop askin' the hows and whys. when not so often.... anyway can't wait for the new book! P.S. the talenta halflings rock too! in my last 3.5 game i used them the parties psion snickered, until the ranger was laid low. |
| #7goblin_prideSep 28, 2008 11:13:02 | P.S. the talenta halflings rock too! in my last 3.5 game i used them the parties psion snickered, until the ranger was laid low. The other players in the first Eberron game I played in thought my paltry little goblin PC was going to be useless in a fight until I started showing them how to coordinate. Halflings are just the same. It's not a matter of size or strength, it's how you use what you have. Just ask any of my players*. *I actually had one throw up his hands and leave the room after I mentioned that the ranger of the group saw kobold tracks. |
| #8Elton74Sep 28, 2008 20:15:25 | Actually, I like how the Valenar are working out in the setting. You don't need a novel. Just some players playing them. :D |
| #9goblin_prideSep 29, 2008 7:20:30 | Actually, I like how the Valenar are working out in the setting. You don't need a novel. Just some players playing them. :D I love the Valenar. Next to the Dhakaani they're one of the best things about the setting. The Elves as a screaming horde of bloodthirsty horsemen? Yes, please. Eberron is one of the best settings I've seen in years and I've been playing for decades. Give me my empire-building goblins, the screaming horde of elves and the tree-hugging orc druids and I am one very happy camper. Don't misunderstand me, I love the whole setting, but the rest all pales compared to these. |
| #10oidSep 29, 2008 13:47:08 | yeah i love the setting it has a real flavor to it, it's not your usual fantasy rpg. it weaves intrigue, eploration, magical vehicles, and so forth in a very unique way. it's how you say out of the box.:D oh i just thought of in the other deathless whorshipping elves lack a little attention too... but they have been in more novels. but i digress, i love eberron which is why i asked. i'm sure me thirst for knowledge is rivaled only by the dragons themselves.:embarrass sorry lost in thought. the goblins are realy cool here too, i always used them as villians in my own campaigns and in eberron the are even better. i like their culture and history and the angles they can be used in the five nations... four nations (poor cyre she was so beautiful once) i try to play up their minority status and their dream of a grand and distant history!the valenar i make as militant as possible without gettin' the PC's in a war against the whole nation (my well meaning brother doesn't no when to back down so i have to manage the elves and him). while still keepin' with thier "elven" side, songs, dance, and excellent craftsmenship. so it all war and horse and history bent. oh and stealthy, my elves are usually very sneaky, if their not just riding down weaker foes. |
| #11elrodianSep 29, 2008 14:17:16 | lets not forget the lead of the most power good and evil churchs are basicly childern, you have half-elves controlling when the sun comes out after the rain, flying ships, a city of mile high towers and many others |
| #12oidSep 30, 2008 14:52:08 | and jaela is a little black girl, as a black guy myself that makes me :D ! |
| #13mhacdebhandiaSep 30, 2008 19:08:49 | That's why we need more explicit diversity in D&D books - gaming is too "white" a hobby as it is! ![]() |
| #14goblin_prideOct 01, 2008 7:48:45 | That's why we need more explicit diversity in D&D books - gaming is too "white" a hobby as it is! How so? |
| #15oidOct 01, 2008 16:56:08 | i think what mhacdebhandia means is alot of characters in the games are lets say, monotone, not the gamers themselves. it's cool when i see anybody of another race no just blacks, that's not to say i feel that seeing a white mage or anything isn't. cool is cool, but is is nice to be... seen or acknowledged. it's a little change of pace, alittle more flavor i guess. and that diversity in eberron is another reason i really like it.(shrug) that's my thought anyway, and i know others that agree. |
| #16goblin_prideOct 01, 2008 21:53:58 | i think what mhacdebhandia means is alot of characters in the games are lets say, monotone, not the gamers themselves. Oh, it's an artwork gripe. I suppose I can understand it. |
| #17mhacdebhandiaOct 03, 2008 21:48:19 | It's both an artwork gripe and a playerbase gripe - most gamers are white, and I think at least part of that is because the overwhelming majority of gaming artwork depicts white people. Especially in a non-historical setting like Eberron, there's no reason for everyone to be white . . . so I'd like to see more diversity in the art. |

Although Eberron was pretty diverse in 3.5 to begin with. Loli-pope for 4E ECS! ![]() -Joni |
| #19oidOct 05, 2008 20:00:47 | well, i kinda disagree. the main reason has more to do with different cultural pressures(though all cultures have their enphasises, look at regional benefits ) than the artwork, though that does have effect it. we kinda tend toward different recreational outlets. it's really kinda complicated (like most things human). |
| #20goblin_prideOct 05, 2008 21:55:23 | . . . so I'd like to see more diversity in the art. So would I. I'd prefer to see more Native American faces in the artwork, but that probably won't happen either. It's a bit much to ask that every possible ethnic type be represented in the artwork, I understand that. For the most part, the artwork seems to follow a general historical pattern. We see Greek-looking people in artwork that shows Greek-looking architecture. I'm perfectly fine with that. I am rather satisfied that alot of the primative, savage and non-civilized people are also depicted with the same ethnicities in the artwork instead of immediately switching to the ethnicities that are generally regarded as backwards and uncivilized. It would be highly insulting to see people of my own ethnicity only in artwork depicting bloodthirsty savages. |
| #21oidOct 06, 2008 17:15:37 | (nods slowly) i very much agree with that statement GP. |
| #22kinowolfOct 07, 2008 15:46:25 | Aw man, this is reminding me of the Earthsea series. This mixed boy cherishes those books... It's a shame that they've been out since the 70s and the next best scion is Eberron three decades later. But that's the past, more Eberron (and other diverse novels and settings) in the future! |
