Okay, so I did a Carver

I did a picture of a carver (deinonychus) next to a human for a size comparison. Although the human isn't right up next to the carver, you can still get a good idea of the size of a carver.

You can go to my deviant Art site for a larger picture. I have no halflings yet, and I'm having problems with this model.

That's pretty cool. Upon what are you basing the Carver's dimensions?

Not bad, a cool picture. However real world dromaeosaurs (the family that Deinonychus belonged too) were almost certainly feathered. Not only are fairly close to birds, but quill knobs (structures to which feathers attach) have been found on the ulna of Velociraptor.

Now, this being a rendition of a fantasy version of the creature, I don't think you need to adhere to the latest scientific reconstructions of the creature.

None-the-less, it is something to think about.

I, too, have a pretty strong background in Palaeontology. I've generally found it impractical to combine my realworld knowledge with DnD. Afterall, how many people would actually know this stuff? My one and only 3E Eberron Ranger did have a feathered dromaeosaur animal companion, though.;)

I need to see a few real live dromaeosaurs to be convinced of that theory. For all I know, the feathered ones could have been genetically engineered.

I believe that the reconstruction of Deinonychus is sound. I bought the model from content paradise, since I'm unable to actually work on my own model. When I get 3DS Max or Maya, I might be able too. And actually take measurements of the bones of a Deinonychus.

I see. It does look about right. They really weren't very large. Their advantages lay not in size, but in others areas.

Again, that's pretty cool. Remove the half-naked human, and drop a Talenta barbarian on that guy's back, and somone's bound to use this as their PC portrait. I've always admired creations like this. They add to the gaming experience, in my mind.

Well, since I can move the darn thing around now, I might be able too. If you send in a commission privately, I believe I can do one for you. (:thumbs up

As an aside, though, a Leaellynasaur is way too small to carry a D&D halfling.

Man most likely.

Man most likely.

Clearly not in the Cretaceous. :P

Though I don't stay as up to date with discoveries as I used to do, I believe ambulacetus is correct that solid fossil evidence was finally found of feathered dromaeosaurs.

Then again, most things presented to the world as "solid fossil evidence" are nothing of the sort. That's another discussion, and clearly not related to gaming.

I'd assumed, likely because of the offhand reference in post #3, that this was a rendition of a young deinonychus. At 10-11 feet long, they'd be perfectly capable.

I'd think they are the best realworld analog to the halfling mounts. Despite Velociraptor's Jurassic Park-induced fame (no doubt it was used due to it's simpler name), it too was nowhere near large enough to bear a halfling.

Of all the firmly established Dromaeosaurs, I can't remember any, off the top of my head, that really could fill the role well, other than Deinonychus. I am rusty, and likely behind the times, though.

Oh, well. It's nice to look back on all those years of fascination.

Back on topic: You could probably drop him (or a similar beast) into a plains background pretty easily, no?

Now that Eberron is back, I guarantee you'll soon be seeing this over in the CharDev forum. (There's a thread dedicated to photo-shopping PC portraits.) It will undoubtedly be photo-shopped to taste, and claimed as someone's PC. Nicely done.

tallric_kruush oh yeah, I agree no need to force D&D to follow real world science in any area. Afterall, its pretty hypocritical to require feathered dinosaurs but not have a problem with five-ton, flying, six-limbed, fire-breathing lizards!

Still, in case anyone is interested, I found the paper (from Science) with the description of the Quill Knobs on the Ulna: Turner et al, 2007

Oh, and nicely done Elton74, looks good.

I don't think so. I didn't put a Copyleft license on this one. ;)

I see. I'm a bit ignorant on the art itself, and the "dos and don'ts" of it all. Hopefully no one yoinks your work without your permission, then (assuming it's even possible to do so--again, you're in the presence of ignorance).

I didn't put this with a commons license for a reason. You see, if people want portraits of their halflings, they could steal it from Deviant Art. But then again, I could legally sue them for damages.

It would be better if they did ask me for permission, or better yet, a commission.

Ahh, you did mention a commission earlier. Once enough people see the example above, that's a distinct possibility.

I seem to recall another one... Utahraptor?

Yeah, Utahraptor is awesome, 6 - 7 meters long (if I recall correctly).

Not to mention over 2 meters high from foot to hip, weighing in over a metric tonne. Utahraptor ostrommaysi was one of the largest dromaeosaurs. I wouldn't know if the halflings would dare try to capture such a species for domestication.

They aren't. I know this because last year I did a Motivational poster about Iron Man being a Warforged. However, that was then, this is now. I can make money doing commissions for Eberron and other characters. Using 3D. In a couple of years, learning to do modeling and all that, I'll be able to do original models and custom models to order.

Stealing my stuff from me is a waste of my valuable precious time and resources. It's easier to ask for permission or comission. ;)

Wow, you see how rusty I am? How could I forget this monster?! You could fit a halfling warparty on this guy's back!

I don't mind labels, myself. ;) I could probably legitimately where dozens, if not hundreds. I imagine the same is true of all of us, though. I imagine that may have something to do with Elton's dislike of labels.

It is nice to discover common interests hidden behind our forums screen-names. There are 413,444 members of these forums, as of my typing, and many are pretty bright. It's no surprise that we share common interests beyond gaming.

Well met, fellow amateur/actual palaeontologists.

Yes that is part of it. Labels serve to separate one human from another. Something, I'm sure, we are all painfully aware of at one time or another. Sure, labeling someone can be funny: I laugh every time Chad Vader deals with his nemesis -- the dweeb known as Hal (its okay, Hal reminds me of myself a lot, although I should be hating his guts because he reminds me of me). I prefer unity over separation, so I generally reject labels as a matter of course.

Hmm. Well, the first one I'm going to start is a company that produces commercials done in CGI. Feature film CGI is too competitive for me to start at the moment, so I'm going to start small.

The second one, I still have some great ideas for; but it's based on how I'm observing WotC at the moment.

Hah! I'd misinterpreted your other post as a newly formed idea. I didn't realize this was something you actually have in the works. Forgive my jokingly smarmy response.

You did say it was for the "good of all mankind", or somesuch, and that is pretty benevolent. ;)

It should be, that's the main reason to start a business is to help millions, and millions of people. I mean, where would D&D be without Wizards of the Coast buying them up 12 years ago? Where would the fans be? WotC is still in the business of helping millions find ways to spend their leisure time.
