How do most folks use Orcus in the Eberron campaign setting?

Feb 03, 2010 15:13:14 In Eberron, the further one goes into the Underdark, the closer one gets to Khyber, the evil progenitor dragon. Within Khyber's coils is the Elemental Chaos, and at the center of that is the Abyss.

Orcus and the other demon lords are creatures born of Khyber in my games. They can be Demon Overlords of the First Age, like the uniquely Eberronian ones already described (The Shadow in the Flame, The Scar that Abides, The Rage of War, The Whisper in the Darkness, etc.), or they can be a unique class of entity. Whereas Rajahs/Overlords are closely linked with the upper levels of Khyber and once ruled the surface, Demon Princes might prefer to stay within the Abyss and maybe lord over innate foundations of reality.

For instance, Katashka, the Gatekeeper, is a unqiuely eberronian Demon Overlord/Rakshasa Rajah that is tied to the forces of undeath. He is said to have created the first Dracoliches during the Dragon Demon War.

Katashka might merely be another name for Orcus, if you so wish. Or they could be rivals of roughly equal power, warring over the same sphere of influence. Or Katashka might be more tied to the material plane and focus his efforts on turning all within his reach into living rot and decay, while Orcus remains stationed in the Abyss, where he attempts to destroy Death itself and replace it with Undeath, affecting all the cosmos. (Or you might reverse that last one, and have Katashka attempting to re-write reality itself while Orcus focuses on more direct means of converting living beings into the undead)

Feb 03, 2010 17:38:09 I'm taking the Orcus=Katashka route. Katashka is the fiendish overlord's original name and Orcus is how he is called in the lore of Ohr Kaluun and certain parts of the Demon Wastes.
