Greetings, all. This is related to an older thread of mine that got no responses, but I was reminded of it when I was paging through the ECG when I was on the...uh...throne.

How many types of Paladins of the Host are there?

This question arose when my eyes fell on the name of Boldrei. One of the characters in Rich Wulf's fantastic Heirs of Ash trilogy is a Paladin in the service of Boldrei. She is identified as a "Spear of Boldrei", and when she turns undead, uses the wonderfully evocative, "By the light of the Hearthmother, burn!"

When I was running a game, I ad-libbed that the paladins devoted specifically to Onatar are, "Hammers of Onatar".

For the other gods, though, might I put forth "Sword (or Shield) of Dol Dorn", perhaps "Huntmaster of Balinor"? If you want to get somewhat odd, "Coin of Kol Korran" springs to mind.

However, the thought of a "Coin of Kol Korran" brought something else to mind: Do Paladins who serve specific gods have certain activities that they investigate? For example, would a Quill of Auron be the Eberron equivalent of a CSI agent? Would a Coin of Kol Korran have an almost-supernatural ability to detect cooked books, counterfit coins, and other types of economic fraud (or be really gung-ho for robbers and thieves)?

Also, I wonder if enlisted men would primarily worship Dol Dorn, while officers would focus on Dol Arrah? I'm sure that they would worship the other, but I do wonder if their rank would determine which one holds a special place in their heart.

Last, what would be your catchphrase for turning undead with each cleric/paladin? For Dol Arrah, I can certainly see, "Burn in the light of the Lady of the Sun!" or some such.

Throw in your own!

Well, I'll take a shot:

I like the idea "Midwife of Arawai" because she is the god of life, and might be invoked by any paladin (or any other class) who has a soft spot children or the like.

I could see "Loremaster of Aureon" for inquisitives looking to find the truth in an investigation or a really good lawyer/teacher.

You already touched on "Huntmaster of Balinor", but you could call it "Beast of Balinor", too, for any paladin who is a bit more militant.

I like "Boldrei's Blessed" to refer to married couples and/or people that marry prospective couples within the Sovereign Host.

No need to touch further on Dol Arrah and Dol Dorn, as I think they kind of go without saying.

"Coin of Kol Korran". Sounds interesting. I think adherents of Kol Korran might be anyone with a love of money, or a PI who investigates monetary crimes, such as fraud.

As for Olladra, she's a tough one. "Olladra's Chosen", maybe, for those who have been very successful in life or really good gamblers (like the folks you see every year in the World Series of Poker). Of course, since she's also the god of feasts, she could be invoked by divine casters using Purify Food and Water.

"Hammer of Onatar". That's an easy one.

Of course, there's the Dark Six. I wonder how that would work. Meh, maybe later

We've actually had a paladin of Kol Korran in our group. Didn't use a specific title(although alms collector came up pretty often and his main cause was the progress of trade and cicrulation of money. He had nothing against thieves in general(isn't Kol Korran their patron as well?) but hated hoarders with a passion. His was was against stagnating greed and actually became a dragon slayer.

May I suggest "Lucky dime" for Olladra's holy warriors?

As for the Six, in our forthcoming campaign there will be a paladin(what can I say, the'yre popular around these parts) of the Devourer. The player has 's yet to pick a title but she was considering Fang or Stormlord...

That dragon-slayer paladin would get along splendidly with followers of the Wyrm Ascendant philosophy, right? They believe the Host are ascendant dragons and make it their goal to eventually reincarnate as dragons, themselves. Since every dragon needs a hoard, they hoard in imitation of dragons. That could make for some nice intra-faith interactions.

I've had several characters in mind (who never made it to the table) who worship the Six in one form or another. The Devourer has always been one of my favorites, as have the Mockery and the Fury.

One such PC was a drow whose tribe viewed them as the mightiest among many "spirits" to be honored, feared and imitated. Vulkoor/Mockery and Shurkaan/Devourer I can remember with ease. For some reason I can't quite remember the name I'd chosen for the Fury in connection with this PC. I'd also listed several lesser spirits, creating my own and plundering some of Hellcow's work for others (I'm looking at you, Komolaq). If this PC ever sees play, it will either be as a Scout or as a reskinned Avenger (as he was originally conceived).

I've also played and/or conceived an Artificer devoted to the Traveler (not such a rarity among Cannith South) as well as divine characters devoted to the "Divine Host" (as in the Sovereign Host and Dark Six as a whole). We nearly had an Invoker devoted this Divine Host in our current game, but that player ended up going in a entirely different direction.

I my last Eberron campaign, the party started off as crew aboard a Lhazzar vessel. Their captain, Victor Stealheart, was a Paladin of Kol Korran, and he was a member of High Prince Rygar's Seadragon fleet. Rygar, being a good leader who understood his captain's strengths and weaknesses, assigned Victor as a Privateer.

Basically, he pirated pirates. In the name of Kol Korran. Good times.

there are alot of interesting ways to play Paladins in Eberron, and I have also seen variants of Paladins in the Unearthed Arcana which allow them to be champions of any of the four Alignemnt "extremes" (Lawful Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Evil and Chaotic Evil). so, as far as Dark Six Paladins go, you could easily play a Paladin of Slaughter of the Fury, for example (try Hand of the Fury, or the Fury's Embraced One. no need for him to pray, he'd just do whatever he did cause he embraces the Madness and Hedonistic Passion that the Fury represents XD ).

now, I also want to say that Huntsmaster I believe is a term used by the Talenta Halflings already... but I may have to double-check now.

so, for a Paladin of Onatar, "Return to the Forge from whence you were made, foul mistake, to be Recast!" ... it's especially good if your Paladin is a Warforged. XD
