Any tips or info on how to make artifact spells from Secrets of Xen'drik? I see that cure spells are X3 for the HP recovered, but I cannot find a common thread among the arcane spells.

Did they appear anywhere else?

I don't know about them appearing elsewhere but the arcane spells seem to use the less-used "area" forms and to increase the damage comparable to modern spells. One ups the damage size from d6 to d8. the other allows for greater bonus damage based on level.

What are you trying to make?

Right now I want to make an inflict wound series of artifact spells for a quest that requires destroying an entity of positive energy that is only harmed by negative energy. Easy enough, with the cure spell provided. The PCs will find the spells written on the ribs of a slain god of death. His ribs are now dark monoliths, the only remnants of the god, in a polluted valley infested with the undead.

I'd like to have more of them has plot devices and sometimes a reward, but what would a gasous form artifact spell do? More people affected? Sort of lame. It could transform a few people into real ghosts for a short period of days or I could use the Ghostwalk rules for a brief quest.

Leomund's spells for shelters are a good inspiration for maybe a 3rd or 4th level artifact spell that can create a small permanent demi-plane (without making it a spell made by Leomund (or maybe it is )). That is cool and easy to make, but just multiplying is a lame.

Interesting and new ideas would be welcomed. To have them as plot devices, something players want to get to do X, prevent the BBEG from getting one or reward them with an out of combat artifact spell like the one that lets them get a small demi-plane at low level.

There was a previous discussion on the evolution of spells, where spell levels can be lowered by adding material components or a focus. Artifact spells are only V,S, so feel free to take an expensive spell at high level and make it low level and free.

Gaseous form is one creature for 2 min/lvl, so making it effect 8 people for 1 hr/lvl is a big jump (though not too useful in combat).  Real ghosts may be interesting. Isn't there a shadow form spell out there?

Genesis (demi-plane creation) is a good example, especially powerful if the entrance can be moved. It also normally cannot create vegetation so adding that makes it more unique.

You can also expand Stoneskin, the Resist and Protection spells, or Summoning spells to last longer, effect more people, provide bonuses, etc.

I once played with the Forcecage spell to have the caster design the shape rather than stick with the standard.

Any help?

Well I would appreciate other suggestions than just multiplying numbers of already existing spells or just modifying existing spells. Hae artifact spells that are plot devices or rewards.

I'm surprised this hasn't come up more.

Some homebrew out there:

I don't think artifact spells gained much traction.
