So I hear the Monk being (re)introduced in Eberron is psionic-based.
...but not being an insider I'm not sure how they're handled. I'm assuming they're more melee-combat-focused psionic characters (like more monk-like psionic warriors). Is that indeed how it's looking?

If so, has any mention been made yet about how the rest of the psionic stuff is going to be dealt with in Eberron? ...as there was a lot more psionic stuff than just the melee-psionic goodness. ;)

Just curious, as I've been a huge fan of 3.5 psionics in the past and loved how it was integrated into 3.5 Eberron.

First off, the monk is not being introduced in Eberron, (re) or otherwise. The monk playtest is for PHB3 which will be coming out next year.

The basic gist is the monk is as close to the monk of old, except that ki as a power source is dead, having been eaten by psionic, and it's stuff stolen. Ki is described as an untenable power source in and of its own, and since Ki is about manipulating personal energy, psionic was the logical choice to encompass everything Ki had.

The monk itself, being a striker, is focused on heavy movement, but with a lot of ongoing damage and status effects that are inflicted with powers.

The best news of course, is that if Kalashtar do indeed show up in the Eberron Player's Guide (of which I have no doubt they will) the psionic themed monk is a perfect fit with the psionic themed Kalashtar (I do believe monk was a favoured class for the Kalashtar).

Curious to see how this plays out seeing as the Eberron DM and player books come out over the next 2 months, and the PH3 isn't due out for a year.

What aspect of that makes you curious?

I imagine the fact psionics aren't in any PHBs before the Eberron books come out will be handled similar to races were handled in the Forgotten Realms books that hadn't appeared in a PHB (e.g. Deva, Gnomes and Half-Orcs). We'll get the fluff but no crunch.

I'm hoping that the EPG will have blurbs on how to incorporate the PHB3 races into Eberron. Mostly so we have a clue as to what races might be in the PHB3 ;)

The Githyanki and Githzerai were both psionic races in previous editions and are in the MM1. Their powers are described as "psychic" so I imagine that's the way they'll handle the kalashtar's racial powers (if any) and/or any other psionic goodies that come out before they unleash all the glory that is psionics onto 4th edition.

OK, so Monks are returning in PHB3 and they're psionic (i.e. psionics is the new power source they're introducing in PHB3).

Does that mean they've confirmed that, essentially, PHB3 will be (for all intents and purposes) the full-on return of psionics, updated to 4e? ...i.e. will it basically be the Psionics Handbook of 4e with all the psionic classes, etc?

(edited in)
Just read the basic answer to this in another post... seems like "yes indeed, PHB3 will be the new Psionic Handbook"... to that I say: Awesome. :D

It very well could and most likely will contain classes from other power sources as well.

They mentioned that they have looked at the shugenja and samurai as well. Not that I actually believe that they are going to port them. It would be simpler to release a "turn the basic classes Asian" article. And it is also an opportunity they explored. Anyways, I do hope there is something more than just psionics in there. And PHB2 is an exelent example, there they released all the primal classes, but still had room for more. (random talk over now).

Only in so much that PHB1 was the Martial Handbook for 4e and that PHB2 was the Primal Handbook of 4e.

Psionics doesn't need a special book all for itself because in 4e, Psionics isn't added onto the system. Its an intrinsic part of the already existing system and is no different from Arcane classes, Martial classes or Divine classes. I only bring this up because in other threads I've seen people complain that psionics is now core. Or that now they have to put up with psionics being added onto D&D so soon. The latter viewpoint completely misses what Psionics will be like in 4e ;)

Also having said that. There's no guarantee we'll get at least 4 Psionic classes in PHB3. I believe we will, but there's no guarantee.

There are many threads about it, but in general, Psionics has broadened a bit. Monks are those who have honed their mind to the point where they can more more forceful blows through their bodies. Kind of like egoists and psychometabolism.

Other manifestations of psionics still exist. We don't know what the other classes ca do yet, but it seems obvious that we'll still have guys that read minds, shoot energy blasts, and teleport.

Fluff-wise, I don't believe much is going to change. When the new classes come out, they'll be assigned to characters according to how best they fulfill that character's concept.

Could be very interesting. After reading the background article on why Ki was folded into Psionics, I understand where they are coming from. Now all we have to wait for is the Psychic Warrior (Defender), Psion (Controller), Wilder (Leader) and we've got the complete set ;) .
