#1 Scrinoverlord Feb 18, 2009 12:00:06	Would it work? Could it work? More specifically: would Riedra be able to subjugate Q'barra completely, and could it be able to maintain it? Say the people and its government (well, the humans anyway; not sure about the lizardfolk) actually agree to become a protectorate in lights of recent lizardfolk incursions (YES, they actually agree to it; no Mind Seeds or Dreaming Dark influence here).
#2 ellorin Feb 18, 2009 13:04:15	Not an easy task in my opinion. Cultural differencies would probably be enormous with Riedrans in the one hand and the self-proclaimed true preservers of all that's Galifar. In the really long term, perhaps. Of course, if the Inspired manage to play new Galifar and the lizardfolk against each other to such an extent that New Galifar's resources woud dwindle it might be easier. After all, using nonhumans as scapegoats in order to unite old enemies under the banner of the Inspired has always been one of their most succesful tactics. To be honest, I always thought that Q'barra would be subjugated from the inside out by the Dreaming Dark, as opposed to Riedra. I consider that an important distinction: the Dark certainly wishes to take control of Khorvaire and impose the same stagnancy as Riedra's. Such a goal doesn't necessarilyassume that using the Riedran empire would be the way to do it. For example, in my last campaign they tried to begin the creation of the Khorvairian equivalent of the Path of Inspiration, beginning in Q'barra.
#3 superdeadsmurf Feb 18, 2009 15:44:31	This is a good idea for a campaign I think. Rierdra would never need or want to attack it, it would be it's savior. The DD would create a bunch of situations until Q'barra's leadership position becomes untenable. Huge and long Lizardfolk incursion, coupled with a Kundurak credit freeze and bankruptcy of the government. Have this happen after an international incident that makes the 4 galifaran nations angry with Q'barra's government. They're under siege and have no where to look but to sarlona, Luckily some chosen give them an offer they can't refuse, a huge loan and use of troops. Only requirement. Permanent settlement and military base, and a government overseer that will stay in place until the loan is payed back, as a check to make sure the money is being spent wisely. And they just never leave.
#4 ieattrollsforbreakfast Feb 18, 2009 18:44:21	Riedran subjugation of Q'barra could really happen any time. All it needs is a catalyst, something the Dreaming Dark could easily set off. Since Riedrans soldiers are already stationed in Q'barra, and relations between the King and Riedra are strong, it's quite likely that, should disaster strike or lizardfolk attacks increase, more Riedran troops would be brought it. Then all it would take is for the King to declare martial law - suddenly, the Riedran hold honest political power in the realm, all under the guise of its saviour. It's exactly the same situation as the unity of Riedra. And what could the Five Nations do about it? They didn't come to a peaceful nation's aid, and the Riedrans are supported by Q'barra. If they stepped in now and told Riedra to leave, they'd risk damaging relations with Riedra as well as sparking a new territory or arms race in the area. They just have to sit back and watch.
#5 skrapsan Feb 19, 2009 0:23:09	Exactly how do you think a Riadeiran solider uniform looks? It's probably in the Sarlona book, but I don't have it at hand right now. I personally I figured they would use a lot of purple and red. And shiny and polished chainmails with spears. And of course a general feel of being tidy and clean. And this would make them a contrast to the local militia that has a more worn down look to them. But that is only my thoughts.
#6 PJammaGod Feb 19, 2009 0:43:02	I've always seen the riedran style of armour as being akin to Lamellar Armour or various scalled armour types. Aside from the north or Adar, Reidra appears to be a hot dry place, so heavy metallic armours would probably be both impractical and prohibitive.
#7 yakman Feb 19, 2009 17:39:41	I don't see why not. In fact, the setting leaves me with the impression that Q'barra is already essentially a Riedran protectorate. It relies on Riedran soldiers for defense, there's a monolith (possibly) under construction, and there are at least some Inspired there. Q'barran reliance on Riedra doesn't require the brainwashing that's present in Sarlona--just a decision on the part of the elites who run Q'barra that it things will be easier and more profitable if they rely on the Inspired... who are just so friendly...

The online art galleries are your friends. Here's the pictures of Riedran troops, though you could certainly go in a different direction. The Harmonious Shield The Edgewalkers I think the Edgewalker image gives a good job of giving a close look at the elite soldier's uniform; it's the black enamel/white stripe that distinguish it as an Edgewalker's outfit. But the concealing helm is a key point. Like the spirit-veil of the Tairnadal, it helps to deemphasizes the personal identity of the wearer; look at the face of Riedra, not a human soldier.
