Renegade Red Wizard character theme question

Jul 15, 2013 20:42:27 I have a kalashtar Illusionist Mage in my game who has the Renegade Red Wizard theme (Neverwinter CS, Forgotten Realms). I'm totally cool with using a theme from another setting, but I wonder what might be a good mechanical fit for the theme's 10th level feature:

Renegade Red Wizard Level 10 Feature (10th level): You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls against any Red Wizard or undead creature that grants combat advantage to you.

Would "Inspired or quori" make good substitutions for "Red wizard or undead" in your estimation? They certainly fit thematically (pun ... kinda intended).

Jul 17, 2013 18:21:14 Thanks for posting, Ender! I agree that they seem a natural fit, but I'm also looking to balance the benefit with the original as best I can. While the Inspired and the Red Wizards seem about equal in comparative frequency as foes in their respective settings (assuming the right storylines, of course), I'm not as sure about quori being a fair compensation for undead, especially as only 1 quori has been statted for 4e!

Now, of course, I'm the DM and have control over the frequency of foes of a certain type, but I'm curious if others out there might have ideas about what is better balanced. Would aberrant rather than undead, for example, be a fairer swap? While the storyline may include creatures of many types, I don't anticipate it revolving around any one type for particularly long stretches, so I'm looking for something that would be about as useful for the character as undead would be in a standard FR game. Thanks!

Jul 18, 2013 9:12:15 I'm, again, lacking much 4E knowledge, but is there a Psionic subtype you could use? I figure a Kalashtar/Quori-heavy campaign would have a number of psionic creatures and villains, much like a Red Wizard campaign would deal with undead, but I don't know if you're focusing much on psionics or it's just a background for your player's character. In 3.5, I might have said attacks against the Inspired or creatures with the Psionic subtype.

Jul 18, 2013 11:44:03 Sadly, there is no psionic keyword for creature type in 4E (it's a power source, a different game silo). But I think I will go with magical beasts, since that is the keyword that corresponds to the quori (immortal magical beasts).

Unless, of course, someone chimes in with another suggestion that makes even more sense! So the theme benefit would read:

Renegade Red Wizard Level 10 Feature (10th level): You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls against any Inspired or magical beast that grants combat advantage to you.

Jul 26, 2013 10:18:06 I would go with the Immortal origin, rather than the Magical Beast type. That's more... intrinsic to what the Quori are, and would be pretty helpful against devils and other stuff.
