| #1Montonius1Feb 11, 2009 13:56:08 | Well it's arrived! The new edition of the Grand History of Eberron has now been posted! There have been massive formatting changes, revisions, removal of typos, tightening of the text and major additions at every level of the book. Now more than ever, the GHoE can serve as your primary supplement to the upcoming 4th Edition Eberron Campaign Guide and Player's Guide. I have included a brand-new introduction that can help both veterans of the setting and those new to Eberron get a better grasp of the world and what sets it apart from the core D&D setting as well as new chronological entries, new maps, a new entry covering the Frostfell and Everice, a brand new look at the 4E Eberron cosmology (to be revised as we learn more) and even new crests. Ever wonder what the symbol of Cyre looked like? It's in there! Want a crest for the Lords of Dust? It's in there! All terminology and magical effects have also been upgraded to their 4E equivalents. The GHoE is now bigger and better than ever! Please download your free copy if you already have enjoyed earlier editions of the book or get your first look at an Ebook that will definitely help players and especially DMs navigate their journeys and adventures through the wonderful world of Eberron (And don't mind the strange blue-and-yellow chapter headings, the yellow was added by my PDF converter but it doesn't look too bad and I can't fix it, LOL). Enjoy it and as always, let me know what you'd like to see in the next edition,to be released after the official 4E Eberron books come out in July. This post is a limited reminder to get the attention of those who were wondering when the promised revision was arriving. Eventually, just the original post will be sufficient as a link to the GHoE for new downloaders but I wanted to provide this special opportunity for people who maybe already downloaded the GHoE to be aware that a major new revision was available. My apologies for how long this took, but I think the results were well worth the wait. To preview the document before you download go to: www.scribd.com/doc/7469132/The-Grand-His... If you just want the straight download, no fuss, no muss, use: www.4shared.com/office/6jP2NQaA/The_Gran... |

| #9Marcus_MajarraFeb 18, 2009 22:41:03 | You've done a great job. I have a few comments, however. The document is huge (nearly 500 pages), and browsing through it and searching for something particular is a pain. How difficult would it be to include an index somewhere in there? Alternatively, could the document be stored online in Wiki format? That would be great, as it allows for easy full-text searching and individual pages could hold links to other relevant pages, making the document far more accessible. I think updating the entire thing would be easier too. |
| #10Montonius1Feb 19, 2009 15:36:30 | I would love to include an index, but quite frankly that is a huge undertaking that I do not have time for now. As for the wiki idea, that has been proposed before and would be great, but there are two problems with it: First, again, I do not have any time for an undertaking of that magnitude. There already is an Eberron wiki, but it is not nearly as complete as the GHoE and to convert the Grand History into a wiki would require several people operating with some oversight from me if it were to be completed in a reasonable time frame. If you or others wish to undertake such a project I would be happy to contribute. However, second, a wiki would not be the same as the GHoE. The GHoE's purpose is, at least in terms of the chronology portion of the ebook, to provide a fully NARRATIVE framework where you can see Eberron's history unfold in one continuous line. A wiki format would defeat this purpose. As such, a wiki of the GHoE would be a useful supplement, but never a replacement for the GHoE. With that said, both an index and a PDF table of contents with hyperlinks where one can simply jump to the topic of interest would be great additions to the document. I do not have time to produce the former and I lack the software to produce the latter. As such, I will provide an original copy of the document to anyone who volunteers to produce either with input from me. But absent that, this is the best I can do for now. I apologize for the size of the book but this represents the collected lore that was published in multiple books and magazine articles and even then is only a fraction of the information they contained. In future revisions, the GHoE will not grow any larger, its content will only be revised slightly to match the final 4E configuration of Eberron. But since much of the lore in the book will be lost as the 3E books go out of print, I think the size is a small price to pay for providing new Eberron fans with crucial historical and background information all in one place. |
| #11oidFeb 19, 2009 18:34:14 | i take my hat off to you good sir.![]() |
| #12skrapsanFeb 20, 2009 16:19:52 | I think the size is a small price to pay for providing new Eberron fans with crucial historical and background information all in one place. Yeah I never really realised that there might come new Eberron fans. Well I knew in theory that they might show up, but I never really considered it. So all I want to say is, you my friend is the sort of human that makes this world a better place. |

| #48Montonius1Jun 07, 2009 12:17:37 | Thank you for all your kind words and your desire for the Grand History to be stickied. I too hope we can get the Grand History made into a permanent fixture on the boards as my Bump finger is getting really tired, LOL. The popularity of the GHoE cannot be denied however--it's been downloaded 2200 times just since the revision in March and is now averaging more than 11 downloads per day, a number I expect to increase with the release of the 4th Edition books. This success is due in no small part to you guys spreading the word, and you have my sincere gratitude for your recognition of the effort put into the GHoE. However, in July, I am now announcing that I will be releasing the all-new Overlord Edition of the Grand History which will be completely revamped and fully updated for Fourth Edition and will probably also finally include some form of electronic bookmarks to make it easier to find what you are looking for. The Overlord Edition will be a major, major upgrade of the existing Grand History, including reformatted text and, also for the first time, fully integrated graphics with the text to provide a true visual feast and better illustrate the descriptions laid out in the ebook. So if we can get the moderators to make this a sticky that would be fantastic, but I think we should wait for the Overlord Edition's release to make it a sticky because otherwise we will simply have to remove the current post and replace it with the new one come next month. |
| #49lyranJun 07, 2009 13:31:10 | Montonius1 is right. We should wait for this "Overlord" edition before we go so far to request this to be stickeid. I just really wanted this to get stickied. Guess I was just in a hury. Oh, and thanks for the sneak-peek info you provided. :D |
| #50GiloJun 07, 2009 16:31:14 | The "Eberron - List of Resources" was stickeid on the Running Eberron board, and The Grand History of Eberron is one of it's mentioned resources. |
| #51Montonius1Jun 07, 2009 17:15:42 | Yes but that link is only to the Scribd link of the GHoE and not to its full download link that does not require a membership. Also, the GHoE should definitely have its own sticky on the Eberron Lore forum since it is the single largest collection of Eberron lore in existence. I'm hopeful someone can get the process rolling once the Overlord Edition is available in late July. |
| #52TalaeJun 07, 2009 23:20:14 | Montonius, I am sorry that I only have one link posted. I haven't really done much of an update for a few months. If you could post a list of links to that thread that you want on the list, I can put them on. Thanks. |
| #53ieattrollsforbreakfastJun 08, 2009 6:59:57 | The Grand History is hosted on the Dragon Above/Eberron Bestiary as well, and you won't need a membership to download it so it's probably a better bet than the Scribd link: http://www.dragon-above.com/index.php?p=features#grandhistory |
| #54TalaeJun 08, 2009 10:55:18 | Trolls, I added that link to my list thread. |

| #71sephiwindJun 28, 2009 14:58:21 | Wizards probably doesn't want it stickied becasue that would mean free source material rather then people going out and buying their products. |
| #72lyranJun 28, 2009 16:37:13 | Wizards probably doesn't want it stickied becasue that would mean free source material rather then people going out and buying their products. You mean like what I did?! :P |
| #73Montonius1Jun 29, 2009 13:39:01 | LOL. I don't think Wizards of the Coast has a conspiracy against my ebook. First off, it already is de facto stickied on Talae's Eberron resources thread on the Running Eberron Forum. Second of all, my ebook is only a collection of lore and contains not one drop of game mechanical information, which would make it pretty difficult to use to replace any existing Eberron sourcebook in Edition 3.5 or especially Edition 4.0. This was intentional, so that the GHoE provides not only a supplement to existing Eberron products, but in particular will lead more people to enjoy the setting and buy the new Fourth Edition books so that they can play in the setting. The GHoE also contains only a fraction of what was available in the sum total of all sourcebooks, since by definition it is a much smaller book. You can't play an Eberron game with the GHoE, it can only enhance your existing game but you still need all the books. Thirdly, while the GhoE is more popular than I ever imagined, it still reaches only hardcore Eberron fans, the vast majority of D&D players do not even know of its existence, especially if they do not use the setting. Fourthly, what really sells RPG products is game mechanics--the "crunch." If you doubt this, you should realize that Wizards moved the EPG in front of the ECG in its release schedule precisely because based on their experience with the 4th Edition Forgotten Realms, people wanted the mechanics more than they wanted the setting information. So with that said, I would like us to make a concerted effort to get the Overlord Edition stickied when it debuts in late July, early August. I do not know how to get that done, but Talae might since he got his list of resources stickied on running Eberron. I believe that the GHoE can be an invaluable supplement to an Eberron campaign using the new ECG and EPG and I hope it leads even more people to pick up their copies and join us in this fantastic world. If I can help contribute to the enjoyment of this wonderful setting created by Keith Baker and the other designers at Wizards, I will have accomplished my goal. But if it is not stickied for one reason or another, I am quite happy to bump it to infinity. |
| #74TalaeJun 30, 2009 10:42:21 | I do not know how to get that done, but Talae might since he got his list of resources stickied on running Eberron. I didn't do anything special. I just noticed it was stickied when I went to bump it one day. |
| #75Montonius1Jul 06, 2009 15:48:09 | LOL. Well, maybe they are all out to get me then! I guess I'm just gonna get carpal tunnel syndrome then from all the bumps, because I'm never giving up on the GhoE and the value it can provide to old and new Eberron fanatics alike! Speaking of which... BUMP! |

| #81Duke5150Jul 21, 2009 12:54:49 | Not bad. This is probably very helpful to people who don't have all the 3e game books. Although I'd like to point out that having the actual 3.5 game books would help players and DM's far more than this resource, as the game books have content (like rules, maps and so on) to help run/play the game. Over all, its a great addition to the collection. Thanks. ![]() |
| #82spaceshotJul 23, 2009 9:47:48 | This resource presented the material so well, it motivated me to buy more 3.5e books to expand what was given. Wizards should embrace this as an introduction to the setting for GMs. Sure, a player can learn from it as well, but for a GM it really unifies it all and was a source of inspiration for many campaign ideas. |

| #101Montonius1Feb 05, 2010 2:26:07 | Not at all. A massive expansion, including artwork and about 200 more pages of material and a brand new chronology adding more than 30 pages to the chronology itself is being completed called The Grand History of Eberron, Overlord Edition. Unfortunately, a work of this sheer scope is taking some time to complete, as I could not begin on it until I had all of the 4th Edition Eberron materials in my hands in September 2009. The inclusion of art work alone in the new ebook has taken months. Barring major delays due to real life concerns, I would look for it probably sometime in April. I will be posting updates here as I get closer to release. |

| #109Montonius1May 04, 2010 1:57:48 | The release of Player's Handbook 3 and all the new information on psionics and other 4th Edition changes has slightly delayed me further as I update everything in the ebook to match the current edition of the game. The reworking of Eberron actually was a little more extensive for 4th Edition than appeared on the surface, especially when you include all the changes and additions to the backstory, the inclusion of the eladrin, deva, dragonborn, shadar-kai and revenants, the Abyss and the Nine Hells in the new cosmology, the new magebred humanoids of the Mournland, the githzerai and shardminds as playable races and so on. I have completed the updates to the races of Eberron section, the various sections outlining the various kingdoms on each continent of the world and the religion of Eberron section and am now working on the large number of additions to the Chronology itself, with only the updates to the chapter on the Dragonmarked Houses remaining. I also have to add the new system of digital bookmarks so that navigation through such a massive tome will be easier. As the edition will be some 800 pages long, this itself will take some more time than expected. Additionally all of this must be edited so that the Grand History is as readable as possible. Finally, the new edition will include artwork throughout to enliven the reading, so that has to be chosen and put into the text in appropriate places. This all will take some time as I have a number of other projects I must complete as well, so I would say that the Overlord Edition will be available this summer, probably in late July. I know many of you are eager to see the new edition and I certainly do not want to disappoint. I hope you will find it well worth the wait. |

I just dropped $200+ on expanding my 'every Eberron rulebook ever' collection to 'every Eberron paperback ever too' (I have officially dubbed my bookshelf The Library of Korranberg); I look forward to diving into your opus once I've devoured them all and becoming One With Eberron. ![]() |

| #116Montonius1Aug 20, 2010 3:54:18 | It's coming along. I have several projects going at the same time, including a Grand History of Athas for the Dark Sun setting, so I can't give a firm date for release yet. But trust me, I'll get it out. |
| #117JimmifettAug 20, 2010 11:16:35 | I know what that is like *kicks stupid browsers for not supporting xpath 2.0* |
| #118alkhorSep 02, 2010 6:23:11 | That is quite amazing, gratz for all the work |

| #122teamfireyleaderNov 15, 2010 15:38:49 | Bump. Also, how's the overlord edition coming along? |
| #123Montonius1Nov 18, 2010 2:39:06 | Oh it's coming along, thanks so much for everyone's interest. I must apologize for the extensive delays, the project's revamping has been extensive. I also will be publishing my first novel next year and the work on that has been consuming my time. The Overlord Edition will probably be completed as my first project after handing the novel into my publisher, which will be early next year, so hopefully it will not be too long, and I hope the new material and revamped look will be worth the wait. |

| #126SiberysJan 24, 2011 10:48:48 | I too am looking forward to the overlord edition. Also, Bump. |

| #130SiberysMay 26, 2011 22:21:40 | Is there an ETA on the Overlord Edition? |
| #131mygirlfriendisadmJun 03, 2011 1:28:29 | Is there any chance that, since this History is constructed out of material from the actual 3.5 supplements and the Dragonshards page, the History be updated with general footnotes? For some of the more esoteric details of the world, it'd be nice to know which book and where they were found in. I understand it'd be difficult to footnote everything, but simply identifying the source from which most detail was derived would be nice. |
| #132Montonius1Jun 14, 2011 1:26:55 | There will be no footnoting in the Grand History of Eberron, sorry. The book is far too large now, at over 600 pages in its newest incarnation, the Overlord Edition (coming in the autumn I promise!), which will draw its information from the two 4th Edition supplements and Dragon and Dungeon Magazine articles as well as 3.5. The page at the front of the book will list every source ever used in the creation of the book, but will not specify where every piece of information comes from. Additionally, the Grand History's first edition, in 2008, did make use of footnotes, but too many readers found that they disrupted the flow of the book and their reading pleasure and I was asked to remove them in subsequent editions. Ultimately, the purpose of the Grand History is to replace many of the 3.5 Edition supplements it draws information from as they disappear from the market, and so while footnoting woud be useful at the present time, it will become far less so as those supplements slowly disppear. And, more importantly, as a doctoral student who recently completed a Ph.D., I have sworn to the Dark Six never to write another footnote so long as I shall live! |

| #136Montonius1Sep 19, 2011 5:04:06 | Yup. I'm looking at a late autumn 2011/early winter 2012 release. The project is quite big, so it has taken a long time to assemble all the pieces. I will let everyone know more about it as we get closer to a final release. |

| #140Montonius1Mar 25, 2012 2:11:43 | I apologise for the delays. I recently completed my Ph.D. dissertation and the due date on my first novel was moved up so I have not had the time to work on it it deserves. Hopefully Ill be able to crank it out by the end of the summer. Thanks for everyone's interest and I hope to make the wait worth it. |

| #143AdventuresInEberronApr 22, 2013 16:41:26 | I just have to say, thank you so much for this, Montonius1! It's been an incredible resource for myself and my games! I recently discovered this and just can't wait for the Overlord Edition and hope you don't stress about it too much. Thank you again! |
| #144snarky_monkeyJun 18, 2013 8:48:13 | Thought I would bump this thread since it has been a couple months with no update on the status of the Overlord Edition. Can't wait to see it since the current version has been such a valuble resource. Thanks for all the work you've put into it, Montonius1, it is greatly appreciated. |
| #145Montonius1Aug 27, 2013 0:33:54 | Bump. LOL. Thank you for the kind comments! I had figured that no one was still interested in this old project. But due to the continuing interest and the continued popularity of the older versions on Scribd, I will be updating to the full Overlord Edition once my other (Paid!) projects are well on the way. I have the edition about 85% complete at present, but I will be looking to complete it sometime in the late fall of 2013. Perhaps look for it as an early Christmas present for one and all. Thanks! |

| #149jefersonlucasAug 25, 2014 12:45:20 | I didn't pay attention on this scenario until I found your work! I'm currently in the middle of my master degree with a lot of work to do, but your compilation is just wonderful and alluring to not read! In fact I even have a plan to translate it to brazilian portuguese, but due to your future release, the version with updates from 4ed I will just enjoy the good read and wait like many others the time that you will gifting us with this amazing work!
Thanks a lot! |
