Queen Aurala -- "By the Grace of the Sovereigns, Her Royal Majesty Aurala ir'Wynarn, Queen of Aundair and all Galifar, Empress of Dhakaan, Defender of the Faith, etc." She's not the sort to limit herself to Aundair in her claims. For King Boranel -- "Boranel ir'Wynarn, King of Brelend." He's not supposed to be too pretentious. Queen Diani -- "By the Will of the Voice, Her Majesty Diani ir'Wynarn, Queen of the Thranish and Defender of All that is Holy." Speaker Jaela -- "Jaela Daran, Speaker of the Flame." Her formal style and her commonly known title are pretty much one and the same. King Kaius -- "By the Grace of the Sovereigns, His Majesty Kaius III ir'Wynarn, King of the Karrnathis, Hammer of Lawbreakers, Bringer of Peace, and Defender of the Faith." Cardinal Krozen -- "His Luminance, Cardinal Krozen." Prince Oargev -- "His Royal Highness, Princes Oargev ir'Wynarn, Prince of the Cyreans." Other ideas? |
| #2SyltorianApr 09, 2008 16:46:42 | Some random ideas and comments...Queen Aurala -- "By the Grace of the Sovereigns, Her Royal Majesty Aurala ir'Wynarn, Queen of Aundair and all Galifar, Empress of Dhakaan, Defender of the Faith, etc." She's not the sort to limit herself to Aundair in her claims. I'm not sure I'd go with Dhakaan. The goblin empire had already collapsed by the time humans got there, and they do not have much affinity for it. I agree that she is not likely to limit herself to Aundair, but calling herself Queen of Galifar will almost certainly have been forbidden by the Treaty, when she abandoned such claims. 'Heir of Galifar' would work, I believe; see below under Boranel. So I'd see her as: "By the Grace of the Host, her Royal Highness Aurala [1] ir Wyrnarn, Heir of Galifar [2], of Aundair and Her Territories Queen [3], Defender of the Faith, Protector of the Brightest Realm, Duchess of Fairhaven, Duchess of Desolate [4], Lady Commander of the Order of the Arcane Congress, Keeper of the Lore [5], Blessed by Arawai and Aureon [6]." [1] Insert at least four middle names [2] See below, under Boranel, for a link [3] If the territories aren't named, this doesn't breach the treaty... although to any loyal Aundairian they include at least the Eldeen and Thaliost. [4] Former colony in the Demon Wastes [5] Associated with the University of Wynarn [6] Representing Aundair's association with agriculture and magic; also echoes Egyptian 'blessed of the two ladies' (even if the echo is very, very vague). For King Boranel -- "Boranel ir'Wynarn, King of Brelend." He's not supposed to be too pretentious. Agreed. Breland is not really religious, so they may have dropped "By the grace of [insert deities of choice]". "His royal heighness[1], Boranel ir'Wynarn, Heir of Galifar [2], King of Breland and Xen'drik [3], Father of the People [4]." [1]Images may not be canon, but you can find that title here. [2] See link above. [3] Last one hardly used by Boranel, and quite illusionary. [4] Cf. Roman pater patriae, here combined with Brelish democratic ideals and the Roman emperor's power of a Tribune of the Plebs. Queen Diani -- "By the Will of the Voice, Her Majesty Diani ir'Wynarn, Queen of the Thranish and Defender of All that is Holy." "By the Will of the Flame [1], Her Majesty, Diani [2] ir'Wynarn, Queen Most Purified [3] of the Thranes, Defender of all that is Holy, Enemy of the Wicked, Princess of Thaliost [4]" [1] I believe the 'Voice' has no real authority of its own; it is an ambassador. [2] Insert middle names. [3] To echo the 'roi très Chrétien" of some French monarchs [4] Asserts Thrane's major victory in the war. Speaker Jaela -- "Jaela Daran, Speaker of the Flame." Her formal style and her commonly known title are pretty much one and the same. "Her Holiness" to begin, perhaps? King Kaius -- "By the Grace of the Sovereigns, His Majesty Kaius III ir'Wynarn, King of the Karrnathis, Hammer of Lawbreakers, Bringer of Peace, and Defender of the Faith." "His Majesty, Kaius III [1] ir'Wynarn, by the Grace of the Host [2], King of Karrnath, Heir of Galifar [3], Protector of the Talenta Plains [4], Warlord of Warlords [5], Father of the Country [6], Leader of Hosts [7], Favoured by Dol Dorn and Dol Arrah [8], Lord Commander of the Order of Rekkenmark, Hammer of Lawbreakers, Bringer of Peace, Defender of the Faith, Ever Victorious." [1] Insert usual middle names. [2] Sounds more warlike than Sovereigns. [3] See above under Boranel [4] Even though the Plains are independent, Karnnath likes to see itself as protecting them. [5] Shows the warlords who is in charge. [6] Binds people to him in propaganda; cf. Roman 'pater patriae' [7] Martial, for the Karrnathis. [8] Idem; some former monarchs following Karrn's Three Faces of War also added the Mockery under its 'real' name. Cardinal Krozen -- "His Luminance, Cardinal Krozen." I believe he is a High Cardinal. Bad man to insult by relegating him to a lower rank! ;) I might be wrong, though. He may also have kept the title of the order he belonged to previously; if he was a Templar, that would be Sir. "His Luminance, Sir Krozen, High Cardinal of Thrane". Prince Oargev -- "His Royal Highness, Princes Oargev ir'Wynarn, Prince of the Cyreans." "His Royal Highness, Oargev [1] ir'Wynarn, of Cyrans and Khunans Prince [2], Lord of New Cyre [3] Heir of Galifar, Lord Commander of the Order of the Crown and Bell, Prince of Saerun [4]" [1] Middle names. [2] As he did not sign the treaty, he has not accepted the loss of Valenar. [3] New Cyre is in Breland, so he needs a specific title, perhaps? [4] For the same reason as 2; add other Cyran names of now Darguun cities. I'd also add that he has likely rejected rather than omitted the traditional "By the Grace of the Host", because the gods have not been too kind to Cyre, recently. Perhaps even a "By the Disgrace of the Mourning" or some such, as a constant reminder to himself of what the country has lost, and a jibe at the gods who have abandoned Cyre. Really not sure on that one, though, and 'disgrace' does not seem to mean this, either, as far as I can tell... Other ideas? - His Royal Highness, Sebastes ir' [forgotten his family here], by the Grace of the Sovereigns King of New Galifar, Most True [1], Defender of Civilisation [2], Lord of Newthrone, Father of the Country[3]". [1] to the ideals of Galifar, that is. [2] officially, against the wilds of Q'Barra. But also against the warring nations. [3] as above, cf. Roman titles; here because he sees himself as the only non-selfish sovereign. - His Royal Highness, Vadallia, [ancestor's name] incarnate, of Valenar King, Lord of Horses, Commander of Hosts, Praised of Name, Ever Remembered. I don't see the Oalian the Great Pine as having fancy titles. The Mror Holds and the Talenta Plains do not have any central government. Neither do the Shadow Marches. Zilargo does not have a single ruler, either, I believe. Lesh Haruuc seems, so far, have stayed with Lesh and not laid any claims to the Dhakaani throne and titles. The Demon Wastes are too alien, the Mournland has the Lord of Blades who may or may not have other titles, but he does not strike me as royalty. The Lhazaar Princes could come up with fanciful ones, but I doubt anyone more than one principality over would care. No nation on Sarlona has monarchs as such (the Inspired come close, but not close enough IMO); Xen'drik might have a few hidden somewhere who have kept ancient names or created new ones, but nobody knows them (probably). That leaves Aerenal, but I can't think of much for the moment. |
| #3elrodianAug 26, 2008 14:41:55 | You could have some titles for Vol becaues she see herself as royalty and she is not in a dragonmark house. Aerenal has some thing to do with there two kings. i do not remember if there are twins or not |

You can also change some of those with numbers to have 'xth of that name, so for example Kaius would be His Majesty, Kaius ir'Wynarn, Third of that Name. |

Latin isn't a language in Eberron though, that being the problem with Fidei Defensor. Although, I'd take out Defender of the Faith, at least for Diani. Maybe change Kaius's to something else. Much of Karrnath is against him because of his decision to remove the Blood of Vol, and you don't go bragging about what you're hated for. If you insist on it, then maybe something like "Warrior of the Faith". But I'd definitely take it out for Diani, as she's been dethroned by the religion and basically become a rich commoner except in title because of it. |

The use of Latin is more for the players, it can be handwaved as some form of pre-Karrnic/Sarlonian Common. As for Kaius, it could stay there, in a similar way to the original title, which was given to Henry VIII by the pope for his defense of the santicty of marriage against the reformation. He then broke away from the Catholic Church so that he could divorce his wife. Slightly different reasons, but a lot of general similarities to Kaius' situation. |
